I think it looks realy promising and the movie is in fact a historical adaptation based on the true story of Oleg the Great who was one of the vikings (varjager/ruser) that unified the trading stations in the east rivers which created the foundation of what was later to become Russia.
    Here is the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FQucYBxjoY

Valhalla Rising is another viking movie that will ship this year. No trailer yet though. The movie is directed and written by Nicolas Winding, the guy behind Pusher and Bleeder.

I thought Beowulf was an awesome movie but a lot of other people said it sucked because it wasn't like the book. I don't really care as long as the movie is good.

It was pretty different from the book, but I thought they were both good. Only thing I found strange was how the movie progressed 500 years from when Beowulf becomes king to when he fights the dragon.

A Viking Saga - Son of Thor is actually a terrible movie which nevertheless has achieved status as a cult-movie here in Denmark.
It is the futile attempt of an american instructor, who has, using otherwise decent some would say talented, danish actors in a film worthy of any sort of dark prejudice one might have harboured against popular culture or hollywood movies in general, concerning at least their calculating misuse of historical facts as opposed to for example propaganda or as in this case the more innocent, but not the least less deteriorating to the truth; drama.
Only the two facts that the professional actors felt sorry for the yankee and that they with time had grown to find the amateurish project hilarious motivated them to stay and complete the movie, at least that is what many of the more prominent one have stated in different talk- and radio shows; a safe bet money played a part too but the point is the movie was as bad as to have its own actors speak of it as a joke, embarrassed to even have played a part in it as the trailer was broadcasted on danish national television in the manner of a freak show for ridicule.

The hollywood Beowulf was terrible aswell, in my opinion, but keep an eye out for the differently approached icelandic version of the poem.

I agree, maybe that only a select few genres work on film ( admittedly I rarely find myself as part of the target audience ); a movie might just not be the right medium for this.
At least it is more historical accurate than the hollywood one, although I´ve read some personal blogs of the developers and to my frustration, given the material they have to work with, they sound like they have a very limited and/or romantic concept of the events of those times and of history whatsoever. Perfect for a movie production.

Beowulf was extremely silly but fun and I suspect would have been twice as good with half the budget.

Beowulf and Grendel is pretty much exactly what you'd expect from a lowish budget, 'realistic' (Grendel is really just a big and rather violent moron rather than a true supernatural being, Beowulf is a wandering hard man rather than an Aryan Ubermann) movie from Iceland - I fell asleep well before the end.

Neither did the poem justice as both viewed it from a 21st century perspective (albeit very different ones) - it is neither a comic book romp nor is it a gloomy Bergmannesque meditation on the outsider and society.

While Pusher was really good and cool. Valhalla rising stinks almost as much as 300 I am sorry to say. There are as yet no good films on Vikings- None- zero- absolutely none!

There are some Danes planning to use 500+ re-enactors for one, but apart from the idea I have heard no more.

Well, everybody knows yankee films suck. On my oppinion, European cinema makes a much better approach to its own history. About vikings, the Polish film Stara Basn (An Ancient Tale) is one of the best, even if it is not focused directly in the northmen (it is settled in pre-christian Poland).

Watch the movie Outlander - it's based off of Beowulf and Grendel, but with a sci-fi twist. It is a VERY excellent viking movie!
Valhalla Rising was... okay, at best. It really wasn't all that great. Kind of wierd
I am interested in An Ancient Tale - I will have to watch it some time

Its soundtrack is just superb, and the start of the film is well documented from the anthropologycal point of view, or at least that's what I think. But then, when they sail to North the film starts to be something of a fantastic film, and from my point of view it loses its interest.
