Free Upkeep Slots

I have heard of people referring to using the free upkeep slots. Now I know in Vanilla the militia units had free upkeep when garrisoned, but what are the rules for SS? Does each city have like 5 free upkeep slots no matter what the unit? Can I keep the expensive calvary units in these slots?

some militia units in SS do not have the free upkeep attribute. you can add it yourself to a milita unit by editing the export_descr_unit.txt in your SS data folder. i recently edited the EDU for SS + TC and added this to militia units.

Ok, the file is no help at all. How many free upkeep slots do I get? And what units qualify with just 6.1 SS no submods?

The Walls / Castle level of the city decides how many free upkeep units you get. 5 is the highest, and the lowest is 1-2 I believe.

Most units qualify for free upkeep units, provided that city/castle can requit that unit.
