Default Byzantine player new to SS mod

I have been playing the Deus Lo Vult mod for a year now, mostly as the Byzantines. Upon seeing that a new version of this was out, I have decided to try it. One problem I have with my campaigns of DLV is that once I finish things up in the east, I tend to lose interest. The western powers are simply too fragmented to seriously threaten my home cities. Is this the case in this mod? I plan to play on VH/VH, as that is the setting I am accustomed to in DLV.

If the Greek Firethrower unit is so overpowered, as in a thread I just read, I simply won't use it.

Hungary sometimes becomes a powerhouse and goes after you, Venice loves attacking your cities as well. I haven't played the Byz in 6.0 yet so I couldnt tell, my experience comes from 5.1

you might as well -- there will be jihads called to constantinople, and that is the only city where you can build them

Jihads and crusades can and possibly will be called against you. You'll probably need greek fire to survive. But don't underestimate the west. If you piss a catholic faction off enough to get a crusade called on you, there are several factions that can give you a real run for your money. Late game plate units could really mess you up.

Crusades against Byzantium? That is not something I've experienced before. I was not aware that Crusades could be initiated against Orthodox nations. Or is that a unique feature of this mod?

In my Venice campaign Hungary is fighting the Byzantines, attacking with three stacks at once, besieging Thessalonica, Adrianople and marching to Contantinopel. They are really a greater threat then in 5.1 or vanilla, they seem to be much better organised. You do not only see that in their attacks but in their defence as well, thay actually protect cities with full stack armies.

Yep, Byzantines are really fun in SS 6.0. You should have a challenge if you play on VH/VH since everyone hates you at that difficulty. In my campaign, I'm trying to recreate the old ERE then maybe WRE too, if I last long enough and don't get bored.
