Default Classical Music helps you think?

Recently I read somewhere*I will dig up the article hold on* that playing classical music while doing work helps you think, and I sware it does. Now I not only play classical, but I expanded my range, like the halo-theme song, infact as long as it is just music without lyrics and there is not alot of "heavy" music *electric guitar, overuse of drums ect...* I find it actually does help me think, anybody else try this, infact right now playing on my computer is the original Halo Theme Song....

I run classical music when I'm doing writing and it does seem to help keep me focused. If you get the slow stuff its also good for reading.

The famous 'Mozart Effect' is, apparently, an urban myth based upon misrepresentation of the data. A few psychologists involved in the first studies denounce the theory that Mozart can increase spacial reasoning. Those that agree with the theory also have books and CDs for sale - they may no longer be the most objective opinions.. They have also shifted the study to rats - some claim in an effort to further obfuscate the findings in favour of selling their products.

Still, if it feels that it helps you to concentrate then go for it. Breathing deeper can also help - most people breathe shallowly to the extra hit of oxygen to the brain for a while could be useful.

Well what it does for me is lower my blood pressure, well honestly I don't know... but it does help me relax so I can only assume so, just like sitting in front of an aquarium and watching the fish has the same affect on a lot of people.

When I listen to classical music while doing work I usually become far to preoccupied with the music to get any work done.

I can give you my first hand observation on this issue. The answer to your question is, definitely yes AND definitely no. (read on)

While doing research on Alzheimer's disease we determined that if the patient never listened to classical music previously and still in the early dementia phase, they could delay the moderate impairment phase by 3-6 months if they introduced 1-2 hours of classical music a day into their lives. If they previously and regularly listened to classical music there was no benefit at all.

One patient in particular who for the first time took up painting while listening to classical music everyday had a short "revival" in memory and concentration. Sadly, the positive trends lasted less then a year.

All the results were highly subjective but does anyone want to take a guess why this was happening?

Abstract; Objective is seeing sound stimulus effect on the body of rats. This experiment required is male wister rats. All rats were devided into three groups, each group has 5 rats, and they were placed in a hot and humid environment, modeled after rainy season in Japan, in order to create a very stressful environment to the rats. Each group, Group A, B, C, respectively, was exposed to 3 kinds of sound stimulus, Pink noise, comforting sound (Mozart-Requiem), White noise, harsh sound, and silence. We observed the effect of these sound stimuli on the body: the amount of lactic acid in the blood, hyperoxidation of brain lipid, and thiamine concentration in the liver. Group A rats exposed to "pink noise" showed less vitamin consumption than those in silence. Also they showed hyperoxidation in the cerebrum. Group B rats exposed to "white noise" showed more lactic acid increase in the blood than the other two groups and hyperoxidation increase. We conclude that "Pink noise" alleviates stress and has good effect on the body. (author abst.)

"Classical" music is a very broad category. Listening to Wagner and listening to Bach are two completely different experiences.
