    Default Re: Post Marian Project -Unit Descriptions

    Here is first lots of description. some of them port from ALEX with some modification.

    {phrygian_mercenaries} Phrygian Mercenary Infantry

    {phrygian_mercenaries_descr}
    \n\nPhrygian mercenaries are dangerous heavy infantrymen, equipped with good armour, helms and shields and wielding sharp axes. Such heavy equipment means that they are ideally suited to cutting their way into enemy formations, and once they have done so their axes give them an advantage, particularly against spear-armed opponents.\n\nThe Phrygian tribes filled the vacuum left by the demise of the Hittite Empire in the 12th century BC and flourished under the legendary kings Midas (he of the golden touch) and Croesus (he of the riches). Such golden charms proved to be their undoing though as the Persian Emperor Cyrus conquered them in 546 BC, absorbing them into his empire. They also well known for Gordian Knot in temple of Sabazios at their old capital of Gordium. The legend (possibly promulgated by Alexander's publicists) was that whoever untied the knot would be master of Asia. With Gordium sited on the Persian Royal Road that led through the heart of Anatolia, the prophecy had some geographical plausibility. Their trademarks usually their soft, red, conical cap with the top pulled forward call Phrygian cap.

    {thessalian_cavalry} Thessalian Cavalry

    {thessalian_cavalry_descr}
    \n\nIn ancient Greece it was widely accepted that the finest horsemen came from Thessaly. However, to say so openly in front of the Companions would have been unwise! Though coming from a society steeped in horsemanship, in the Peloponnesian War the Thessalians tended to side with Athens and usually prevented Spartan troops from crossing through their territory. Armed with spears and short stabbing swords and protected by a stout cuirass, the Thessalians can be seen as at least the equal of the more famous Companion Cavalry. They are able to punch through weak points in an enemy's line and wreak havoc!

    {kardakes} Kardakes; from EB Kardakas and ALEX Kardakes

    {kardakes_descr}
    \n\nThe Kardakes are heavy infantry style from Late Archemenid era, Armed with the Iranian longsword, a long thrusting spear, and also carried the large hoplon-shaped shield known as the Aspis. The armour to protect the torso was usually composed of iron scales and was worn over a brightly decorated tunic hanging down to just above the knees, however this was far from uniform so any rudimentary armour, including bronze scales, linen and even quilted cloth could suffice depending on individual wealth or the available equipment of the local armouries. Originally created by Achaemenid to imitated hoplite, well drilled, close order infantry these men form the core of Archaemenid at time of Alexander. Effect from defeated at hand of Alexander have stigmatized their reputation as the inferior to Hellenic people which they take this as insult, not fact. As, after Alexander, they had been prove their versatility in the sense of providing a reliable platform, fending off cavalry and faring decently in close combat, without being restricted by the inflexible Macedonian phalanx, making them some of the finest infantry to the disposal of the Easterner. Though it can be argued that the Kardakes must have retained some uniformity during Achaemenid times, with the royal treasuries withdrawn and being deployed by Eastern nations who have rather turned their eyes towards cavalry, they do also inevitably represent a continuously declining unit type.

    {kardakes_descr_short}
    Spear-armed Heavy Sabaean infantry dereived from Archaemenid effort to imitated hoplite. They are useful when employed against cavalry and for tying up other enemies.

    {Takabara} Takabara

    {Takabara_descr}
    Takabara are recruited a particularly ferocious arabs clans to fight for Saba for a strong offensive front. Takabara were named for the shield many troops of these units used, the half-moon-shaped "taka". The taka was larger than the Greek pelte but roughly similar in shape which eventually derieved from Persia because of the better manoeuvrability afforded by its shape. The Takabara were also armed with axes capable of cleaving through enemy armour and also some armour heavier than Red Sea Axemen counterpart. The Takabara were known for their ferocity in battle and as such their charge is particularly effective, on top of this the Takabara will not flee from a straight engagement as soon as the levies from foreign armies would flee back to their farms.

    {Composite_Bowmen} Composite Bowmen

    {Composite_Bowmen_descr}
    Composite Bowmen are bowmen which use powerful composite recurved bow which origin in Asiatic Steppe. Composite bow is nearly twice as strong as a regular bow, which normally uses horn on the belly and sinew on the back of a wooden core. Sinew and horn will store more energy than wood for the same length of bow. The strength can be made similar to that of all-wood bows, with similar draw-length and therefore a similar or greater amount of energy delivered to the arrow from a much shorter bow. They usually wore light clothes and little if any armor in order to give them greater flexibility. Although widely adopted by all easterner, this powerful bows are not widely use in western mediterranean because the animal glue traditionally used can lose strength in humid conditions and be quickly ruined by submersion.

    Here are more units.

    {Persian_archers} Persian Archers-Spearmen

    {PErsian_archers_descr}
    Persian Archers-Spearmen are equipped in a style that was common in the East before Alexander's invasion. Usually recruit from persian subject and armed with bows and spears, and protected by shields and light armour, they are capable of engaging in melee, and are not as vulnerable to cavalry as most archers. As a result they are equally well suited to use as a screening force, ranging ahead of the main battle line, or as a second line to throw into melee after the heavier infantry have engaged. Although troops of this type faired poorly against hellenic heavy infantry, they are still highly versatile, and a crucial component of battlefield which cavalry rules in the east.

    {Persian_archers_descr_short}
    Adapted to threat from the Steppe, Persian Archers-Spearmen are hightly versatile light infantry equipped with bows, spears, and shields.

    {east_immortals} Foot Companions

    {east_immortals_descr}
    Companions are a social and military elite. Recruited from the highest ranks of society, they accompany the King himself on campaign. In the west the Greeks called these men Immortals because it was said that any man who fell in combat was immediately replaced, maintaining their total number at a constant 10,000. They are also known as 'Apple-bearers' due to the golden or silver apples which both decorate the butt of their spears and serve as counter-weights. They have a long and storied history, including a key role in the defeat of the Spartans, and their allies, at Thermopylae. Service in this elite regiment is regarded as a high honour, and each man stands to gain or lose much on the outcome of battle, so they are highly dependable.\n\nEqiupied as heavy spearmen, they also carry composite bows. Able to strike down the enemy from a distance, or stand against both cavalry and infantry, they are varsatile and formidable opponents.

    {east_immortals_descr_short}
    Companions are elite heavy infantry equiped with spears and bows.

    {hearth_troops} Hearth Troops; modify from BI Saxon Hearth Troops

    {hearth_troops_descr}
    Hearth Troops are the picked men sworn to defend a lord. They are armed with sword shield and heavy spear, heavily armoured and loyal to a fault, experts in the art of hand-to-hand combat.\n\nHearth troops are the elite warriors of the Germans world, men who have no other tasks in life but to fight and enforce the will of their lord. These men have personally sworn an oath to the lord of their hall. They will give their lives in battle when ordered to do so without a second thought. Being recognised as warriors and worthy men, they have no other choice. In return for this unflinching loyalty they are entitled to a place by the fire, a roof over their heads, good food, drink, companionship, their lord's protection even if they have done wrong, and the sure knowledge that their lord and companions will avenge them if necessary. They have some level of desciplined due to long contact between Germans and Rome and some had joined auxilia service and learn much from this.

    {hunters} Hunters; port from BI hunter

    {hunters_descr}
    Hunters are light bowmen who can also, in a crisis, fight in hand-to-hand combat. Drawn from among the forest-dwellers and hunting folk, they are experts in using stealth and concealment to close on their prey.\n\nHunting is an important part of life for all the Germanic tribes. It puts food on the table throughout the year - fresh meat is always welcome - and trains young men in some of the arts of war: patience, killing, and a tolerance for blood. These men are useful to any Germanic leader, as his other warriors are often mostly infantry, and the hunters' ability to strike down an enemy at a distance is not one to be lightly discounted.\n\nThey are unarmoured troops, so will not survive for long in melee, or when caught by light cavalry. Their self bow is an adequate weapon, but no match for the compound weapons used by nomads and eastern troops.

    {champions} Champions; modify from BI golden bands

    {champions_descr}
    Every tribe needs its heroic warriors: men who stand head and shoulder above the rest. Men who face with danger! Men who show no fear no matter what the odds!\n\nLarger than life, the Champions are such men. They are heroes in a culture that values its heroes above gold itself. Every act that these men perform reflects directly on the honour of their people. Their victories are celebrated in songs and epic tales; their deaths - their noble and worthy deaths - are the stuff of legend, told anew to inspire fresh generations of warriors.\n\nThese men are armed with sword, shield as well as wore best armour the tribe can afford. They are expected to carry the day in battle, or die trying. As a result, they get the best of everything, but there is an implicit contract in all this hero-worship. They are expected to give their all when required, even to fight on when all hope of victory has long gone. It is a noble way for a warrior to live, and a harsh one.

    {champions_descr_short}
    Every tribe needs its heroic warriors: men who stand head and shoulder above the rest. Men who face with danger! Men who show no fear no matter what the odds!

    {kerns} Kerns; modify from BI Kerns

    {kerns_descr}
    Kerns are lightly armed, unarmoured skirmishers-spear warbands used by the Celtic tribes to harrass and wear down their enemies and then hold enemy in melee when run out of ammunition.\n\nArmed with small javelins and spear, kerns are better in battle than ordinary warbands and can fought geurilla warfare. They are properly trained for war, given decent weaponry and let loose on the enemy! They are best employed as a screening force, to weaken an enemy before the main combat, or to pursue fleeing men and give them no rest. They also can stand in a battle line and fight hand-to-hand but cannot hold for long against better armed warriors.\n\nHistorically, Kerns are the pattern of warfare among the Celtic people of Brittania and didn't change much until the coming of gunpowder weapons nearly 1000 years later. Constant warfare between lords in the Western Isles, Scotland and particularly Ireland made sure that there was always employment for soldiers.

    {gallowglass} Sword Masters; modify from BI gallowglass

    {gallowglass_descr}
    Sword Masters(or gallowglasses) are a warrior elite among their people, origin from celtic britons, armed with double-handed weapons and armoured in chainmail. It is their task to hack a way into an enemy battle line.\n\nThe people of the north and west of the British Isles have a long tradition of producing heroic warriors, men loyal to the point of death to their lords, who would stand in line of battle and be the first to rush forwards to meet an enemy hand-to-hand. The 'gallogladh' or gallowglass is but one example.\n\nHistorically, the style of warfare in Scotland and Ireland changed little over the centuries, being much the same for hundreds of years. The fragmented and tribal nature of society meant that there was always a need for a group of brave, dedicated (they had no other duties beyong fighting) warriors such as these men. The gallowglass as a recognised type was a comparatively late arrival in Ireland from the Western Isles, but as a style of warfare the old ways didn't change much until the coming of gunpowder, a thousand years or more later.

    You are doing tremendous work here.

    Just a couple of minor comments on names - both 'Kern' and 'gallowglass' are for me specific to British Islands, and would look odd on Indie Celt or Gaul units recruited in, say, what is now Czech Republic.

    Sword Masters sounds OK - is there an alternative for 'kern'? Hunters? Youth Warband? Foresters?

    At first I created post-reform concept of Gauls as "Celtic Inheritance From Gauls to Britons". I want pre-reform roster of Guals base style on Aedui and Arverni and post-reform will add heroic style of Casse to upgrade style that halt after caesar conquer to gauls. With history of Celtic left only in Great Britain so post-reform monument must be built in this isle.

    But if many peoples don't like these concept I may be consider to change something too much britons. On Indy gauls, I think indy gauls in eastern europe quite doom by many way and will soon lost their land to rome, germans, thrace, and scythia.

    I must apologized for not so sensitive to european history since I am southeast-asian.

    No need to apologize for anything Suppanut - you are an official hero of this mod already.

    The curent assumption appears to be that by the time Marius comes along that the Gauls and Indie Celts will have lost all their territory apart from Britain?

    They are amongst the weaker factions at the moment (although I have hopes that DBH will give Gaul a better campaign start) but I have seen Galatia at least survive post Marius in the latest versions.

    They are amongst the weaker factions at the moment (although I have hopes that DBH will give Gaul a better campaign start) but I have seen Galatia at least survive post Marius in the latest versions.
    Thank you.

    Similar to that although I expected them to do somewhat more optimistic when think post-marian scenario like celtic world still hold a large portion of northern Frence and and Great Britain which they done it histoically while in central europe they have too much enemy and spread too thin to survived or become significant player there.

    {carian_skirmishers} Carian Skirmishers; based on EB Misthophoroi Uazali (Mercenary Karian Warband)

    {carian_skirmishers_descr}
    Carian Skirmishers are warbands of from the peoples of the southern coast of Anatolia: the Carians, Lycians, Pamphylians, and Pisidians but the Carians is the most famous among them. These warlike peoples have long traditions of military service abroad due to low soil fertility made their land can't support so many population as well as internal struggle among people within area. They are skilled mountain fighters. They carry a solid rectangular shield slung over the shoulder to ease the burden on the arms, emblazoned with signs of their peoples, as well as wear a solid Phrygian helm, and carry several javelins and a lengthened xiphos sword. Their shields and helmets provide them a great deal of protection compared to most other skirmishing units, and their ferocity in melee surpasses most of their peers. \n\nHistorically, many young men from southern coast of Anatolia went overseas to serve as mercenaries in their native infantry traditions and served abroad as warrior bands. They were used to great effect in irregular mountain combat, but also distinguished themselves in assaults, and if they end up in the battle line in major pitched battle, a good commander will maximize their skirmishing and melee abilities by using them in a flanking, ambushing, or screening role if at all possible.

    {Lonchophoroi_descr}
    Lonchophoroi are sturdy medium cavalry form by hellenistic noblemen whose purpose is to crash into foe and have the staying power to breach enemy line. Armed with stout single handed lances and the mighty aspis, they can unleash a terrible charge. Once they have inflicted gruesome casualties on our enemies, they will switch to their melee weapon and begin a close-in slaughterwith the stout bladed war axe like that used by Alexander at the Granicus. They are armored with scale reinforced linen, greaves, and masked Phrygrian helmets. They are best used as a general purpose heavy cavalry but no matched against more elite heavy cavalry of the east. \n\nHistorically, the lancers of later Hellenistic armies were divided into several types. Some cavalry performed charge itself being their goal with shock as secondary role. This sort of cavalry was used to great effect by the forces of Syracuse in the west, Epirus, Pergamon and Macedonia in the heartland of the Greek, and the even the great Hellenistic kingdoms. Still, they have some weaknesses, and should not be expected to defeat elite troops in prolonged battle.

    {kinsmen_descr}
    The Kinmens are an extra-heavy cavalry unit equipped with the finest technology mustered by the Achaemenids. They used to be the most expensively attired cavalry in the world and were indeed the sign of the equestrian power of the Achaemenid world order that came to pass. Kinmens undergone changing With the coming of Macedonian cavalry tactics and financed by royal treasuries. Armed with a xyston, and a machaira along with the deployment in column formation, this unit was purely equipped for melee combat, like the later cataphracts. The mount being barded with peytrel, chamfrn and the parameridia or armoured saddle, made this unit a particularly headstrong opponent worthy of respect. They are only truly inferior to the proper cataphracts in the matter of equipment and tactics and increasingly archaic vis-a-vis to the torrent of improved cavalry equipment being developed in the steppes, will make this unit only useful as an option of heavy cavalry before cataphracts can be fielded. \n\nHistorically, the late Achaemenian heavy cavalry was an amalgam between Iranian horsemanship and an increasingly higher need for resilient and headstrong cavalry for shock tactics. By the end of the Achaemenid dynasty, the Persians had two types of shock cavalry, the most popular undoubtly the scythed chariot often pulled by armoured horses and lead by heavily armoured crew. The second being an exotic variety of extra-heavy cavalry, household but also recruited from the Bactrians, Massagetae, Sakae, Cappadocians, Armenians and even westernly Scythians. The interesting aspect is that instead of completely relying on local traditions, the Achaemenians pursued their own reforms of the heavy cavalry. While for most of its lifespan being more of a extra-heavily armoured skirmisher cavalry with the ability to mount a charge in column formation, it evolved into a unit meant for full contact.

    {Proto_Long_Boat} (Early) Longship/LongBoat

    {Proto_Long_Boat_descr}
    Barbarians have used slender boats propelled by simple paddles since the Bronze Age, and this ship has a similar design, but is much more advanced.

    The longship has evolved to be wider and longer than previous Barbarian boat types, and to feature a mast for speedy travel and proper oars for manoeuvring.

    With a single square sail and only a very small keel, these slender ships seem primitive to more civilised peoples, but they are both swift and seaworthy.

    On the other hand, they are not equipped with a ram or a ballista or any other weapon for naval combat, and they are not built to be used as fighting platforms. These factors make the longship inferior in naval combat, but skilled a skilled captain can sometimes outmanoeuvre an enemy ship and allow his crew to board before before it can respond—barbarian oarsmen are usually free warriors rather than slaves, so they give a good account of themselves.

    Even so, most barbarian warlords prefer to avoid fights at sea and use their navies to stage coastal assaults instead.

    {noble_spearmen} Noble Spearmen

    {noble_spearmen_descr}
    Only a few of the German tribes put any great stock in the use of cavalry on the battlefield, and it is common that even the nobles fight on the ground.
    However, just because they are mere infantry, these nobles are hardly poor beggars. They are hardened warriors, well able to hold a line or lead an assault.

    The German heartlands are poor and remote, and they only contain iron of very poor quality. For this reason, the early German armies were often very lightly equipped, wearing little protection and often fighting with clubs.

    As tribal wealth has grown through trade and conquest, the nobles have amassed the resources to wear heavy coats of mail and carry well-forged weapons into battle.

    {asturian_wildmen} Asturian Wildmen

    {asturian_wildmen_descr} The mountains of Asturia could easily hide a whole army, and in fact they do.

    The Asturian wildmen live as herders and hunters, and occasionally brigands and mercenaries.

    The Asturian tribes observe many Celtic customs, but they are not a druidic culture and they usually worship the same gods as the rest of the Iberians.

    Historically, Asturia has always offered resistance to invaders. Neither the Romans nor the Visigoths could fully control the mountainous province, and it was the only part of Iberia that was never under Islamic rule. Between the eighth and the tenth century, Asturia was an independent kingdom, and in the 14th century it was briefly declared an independent principality.
    The Falangists even renamed Asturia 'The Province of Oviedo' because the old name invoked too many notions of self-governance and resistance.

    {lusitanian_heavy_spearmen}Lusitanian Heavy Spearmen

    {lusitanian_heavy_spearmen_descr}
    Lusitania possibly has the most military power of any province in Iberia, and these elite spearmen form the core of Lusitanian armies.

    Like most Iberian cultures, the Lusitanians favour flexible medium infantry with equipment that is similar to Roman legionaries although somewhat outdated.

    These spearmen, however, are definite heavy infantry. They wear bronze scale coats and greaves, or even iron mail, and they carry large oval shields and long spears. In addition, each man carries a number of iron-tipped javelins which will frequently pierce armour.

    Historically, Lusitania roughly covered the same area as modern-day Portugal. The Lusitanians were a Celtic or Celtic-influenced people who took part in the early Mediterranean trade and grew wealthy enough to erect large cities on the coast. Along with Asturia and Gallaecia, Lusitania was the last Iberian province to become integrated into the Roman empire, but when it did, the Lusitanians soon acquired status as Roman citizens.

    {Dosidataskeli} Dosidataskeli

    {Dosidataskeli_descr}
    The dosidataskeli are extra-heavy infantry recruited in Vasconnia, part of the province of Cantabria.
    The dosidataskeli wear a coat of bronze scales over a coat of mail, and they protect their faces behind a mail veil attached to their helmet—a practise that was adopted from mercenary Vascones by many eastern armies. A pair of bronze greaves complete the armour and make the Vasci warriors almost impenetrable walking towers.

    The dosidataskeli fight with heavy spears and carry shields for added protection! They also carry a number of highly effective iron-tipped javelins.

    Dosidataskeli are recruited among tall and powerful men, and this along with their superior armour and their fearsome reputation makes them a menacing presence on the battlefield.

    Historically, the Vascones inhabited roughly the same area as the modern-day Spanish province of Euskadi and parts of Southern France. This area is commonly referred to as the Basque Country in English. This area is also roughly equivalent to the historical Kingdom of Navarre.
    The area has changed hands many times, but the Basque have always maintained their unique language and a sense of ethnic identity, perhaps because of their relative isolation in and around the Pyrenees.

    {Dosidataskeli_descr_short}

At first no Indian ever claded elephants with armour but when greeks started to exploit them they put a thorakion (tower) or howdah is also attached to the elephant's back, which serves as a missile platform for a few archers, and also armored the elephant, protecting its head and sides and thus giving the elephants a much better chance at resisting enemy missile fire. When these ideas came back to India by Indo-Greek Kingdom, they add metal blade tipped to tusks and trunk to attack enemys which possible through better skill of mahouts to train and control their beast partners along with excellent skill in metalwork, and archers on howdah also use longbow, and best of all is that they can field more elephants in battle at less costs as India offer all resources and knowledge they need to at better both quality and quantity.

They are trained to form a phalanx making them an effective attacking force as well.\n\nThese elite troops can only be recruited in provinces that have substantial Greek or Macedonian populations in which the 'hoplite ethos' is taught from the earliest age.

    {Greek_Heavy_Hoplites} Greek Heavy Hoplites

    {Greek_Heavy_Hoplites_descr}
    Those hoplites who can afford to equip themselves with coats of mail are usually experienced veterans, and a unit of armoured veterans presenting a wall of spears always pose a threat to the enemy.

    Even more so than other hoplites, heavy hoplites are well drilled and capable of defeating most other unit types in hand-to-hand combat with minimal casualties on their own side. However, they are also even more slow and inflexible than other hoplites, and their armour is not enough to protect them from prolonged missile fire, flanking attacks, long pikes or any other hoplite bane.

    Nevertheless, when used correctly heavy hoplites can be the road to victory even against great odds.

    Elite hoplites wearing good armour.

    {barb_horse_archers_sarmatian} Sarmatian Horse Archers

    {barb_horse_archers_scythian_descr}
    On the vast steppes, the horse archer reigns supreme. \n\nThese riders are the product of generations spent perfecting the skills needed to effectively wield a bow while mounted. They can circle an enemy, thickening the air with arrows until they are sufficiently weakened for heavier troops to launch a main attack. Their superb horsemanship means catching them with a counter charge is difficult, even one with light cavalry. \n\nThe Sarmatians are people of Iranian stock who migrated from Central Asia to the Ural Mountains between the 6th and 4th century BCE and eventually settled in most of southern European Russia and the eastern Balkans. Like the Scythians to whom they were closely related, the Sarmatians were highly developed in horsemanship and warfare. Their administrative capability and political astuteness contributed to their gaining widespread influence. By the 5th century BCE the Sarmatians held control of the land between the Urals and the Don River. In the 4th century they crossed the Don and conquered the Scythians, replacing them as rulers of almost all of southern Russia by the 2nd century.

    Deadly with a bow and highly mobile, Sarmatian horse archers are thorns in the side of many opponents.

    Are the German 'Noble Retainers' supposed to be retainers who are nobles or retainers to the nobles?
