300 Men, vs 9200 Peasents who will win?

Spartan's (Greek) vs Xerces Army (Persian)

Not quite as heroic as the real 300 Spartans and King Leonidas at the Battle of Thermopylae, but a friendly custom battle online with my brother turned into a Historical Battle.

We decided we would do something different with Total War rather then just having a plain 1 versus 1, we played as Spartan's because we couldn't get the numbers exact it was 320 Spartan Hopolites (+1 General) Each (642 Troops all together) vs the maximum number of peasents in a 2v2 (4800 each (9600 Peasents Total)).

We played on a bridge map to make the number of peasents fighting at one time lower then on a wide open spaces map.

When we began we rushed to the bridge waiting for the 9000 peasents to cross but they just walked aimlessly around until we ran across the bridge where the battle became intense and a few spartans were lost to the Peasents.

We were fighting a two front battle on either side of the bridge when one side of the bridge had cleared and all the peasents had ran, we practically walked up to them and then they ran for there lives.

What a great way to represent one of great armies of antique: 9200 peasants. And I thought the Persians won that battle :hmmm:

I'd say other spartans or elephants. That'd be some epic action.

Persians did win, and against thousands of Greeks, not hundreds. They just got a really, really, really bloody nose doing it. ^^

Also, TW's morale system probably doesn't represent the Persian armies accurately; I doubt they'd break as easily as peasants do simply because there were so many troops behind them.

Darius sent his Persian army in waves of soldiers in the Battle of Thermopylae, not all of them at the same time, and the first few waves did break, though not as easily as peasants, sure. They did get bowled over like a bunch of bowling pins though.

And yes, it wasn't just Sparta that was at the Battle, plenty of Athenians, Thespians, Thebans, and other allied hoplites as well as lighter allied soldiers were there. They numbered in the thousands. By the time they were flanked, only about a hundred real Spartans could still fight. The Thebans were there as well as a whole bunch of helots and some other allied soldiers.

Does vanilla RTW have poorly archer spearmen? If they do, get them to fight the Spartans as that's what Persia would've been mostly composed of. The 10,000 immortals were exactly just that, trained in the use of the bow and spear.

First Persians won the battle. second it wasn't Darius the Great who commanded the persian army, it was Xerxes.

The spartans killed the persians morale. If you were over 250 thousand men strong and you lost alot of men to hundreds of greeks, wouldn't you're morale go down?
    Got nothing...

yes you're right. It's very good that you don't believe that Persians were over 1 million. It's really a joke.

Instead of fighting Peasants, maybe you should be fighting Eastern Infantry. That would make the pictures look better.

    Korlon,

If you are talking of the real Battle of Thermopylae, you have your information wrong. I have translated a book on the battle, which you can see and get from www.periscopio.gr (click on the British flag to go to the English page), and the book was written by historians.

There were no Athenians in the Battle. Not even one.

    The Greek force consisted of:
300 Spartans (there were also 900 perioikoi with them)
    500 Mantineians
    500 Tegeats (from Tegea)
    120 men from Arcadian Orchomenos
    An additional 1000 Arcadians
    400 Corintheians
200 Phleiasians (from the city of Phleious)
    80 Mycenaeans
    *400 Thebans
    *700 Thespians
*Opuntian Locrians ( the book says they had sent all of their army, but we do not know how many these were)
The book also says the total Greek forces did not exceed 7,000 men.
The ones marked with an asterisk were all Peloponnesians and the rest were from mainland Greece, Boeotia and Locris regions.

Of these forces, only the 700 Thespians, 400 Thebans, and the 300 Spartans under Leonidas stayed for the battle, as all the others left for their home towns when they heard of the size of Xerxes' Persian army and some of them submitted to him and changed sides. It is also said by Herodotus that the Thebans wanted to leave but Leonidas held them as hostages because he did not trust them and this proved justifiable in the end.
The Thebans finally left and submitted to the Persians who killed some of them and treated the rest as unworthy slaves.

By the end of the battle, all the Spartans and Thespians had fallen. The Spartans and the Thespians fought bravely to the last man.

    Regards.

nice battle... but next time u want a battle like that make it more even...
u gotta have better units for the persians rather than having 9000 peasants charging to their deaths its pretty obvious whos gonna win... at least make it 9000 of something else. cuz basically u could throw ur crap at a peasant and they will
    a. die
    b. run away yelling "AHHH IM BEING ATTACKED!!!! IM GONNA DIE"
but hey, we all like to have a slaughterfest once in a while right?
