Default Problems with 'white label' budget version

    Aloha,

After reading numerous good things about playing XGM with the BI or Alex .exes I was delighted to find the pair of them going cheap in my local software emporium.

I bagged both and have installed them, but I notice that the budget version of BI appears to install already patched to 1.6. Whether or not this in itself is a problem I don't know, but I can't run the XGM installer because it tells me that it needs RTW1.5 or BI1.6 (ie it doesn't recognise I have BI1.6 installed). I know RTW is at 1.3 but BU is definitely 1.6. I've tried downloading the BI 1.6 patch but it just tells me it can't find the .exe when I run it (presumably because it's already at v1.6?).

I've also uninstalled all 3 games, manually deleted the Activision folder and then performed a clean reinstall to no avail.

So in a nutshell I currently can't play XGM through either the BI or Alex .exes.

    Anyone got any ideas?

Sounds like BI might be installing to the wrong location. If your game is already at 1.6 then both RTW and BI should show that as the version number at the top right of the options screen.

Does BI itself work for you? When you look in the Rome folder can you see the BI mod folder there?

BI definitely shows 1.6 at the top right of the options screen and it runs fine (although RTW shows 1.3). I can see each of the RTW, BI and Alex .exes within the Rome - Total war folder (and their corresponding sub-folders are also present).

I'm baffled, to say the least.

Have you tried manually pointing the XGM installer to the Rome folder? Just make sure you tell it to install to the folder that contains all the exe's - not the data folder.

Just gave that a go, I'm still getting the same message from the installer -

"Your version of Rome Total War appears to be incorrect. This mod requires RTW version 1.5, or RTW:BI version 1.6. Select Ok to continue anyway."

This coupled with the message -

    "RomeTW-BI.exe has not been detected."

When trying to patch BI to 1.6 suggest to me something like you were getting at, Dime, when you questioned whether or not the install was to the correct directory. For what it's worth I checked that the name of the .exe was identical to that produced by the error when patching, and it is (RomeTW-BI).

    So I'm still clueless :hmmm:

PS thanks for your help so far!

Check the path of the file i.e.,

Does the game install to Activision/Rome-TW or TheCreativeAssembly/Rome-TW

I had a problem similar to this a while ago...the install paths were different for the vanilla game and XGM.
IMHO XGM is the easiest mod to install.

I wish it were that simple, I've checked and double checked - everything is sitting in the default Rome location, ie Program files/Activision/Rome - Total War.

This is starting to get mildly annoying.

When you run the installer, a file is geneerated called "install.log" can you e-mail that to me, or attach it to a post here?

Mailing install.log now! A couple of things I feel I should add - the install.log isn't generated until the install completes, so I have to bypass the errors telling me that it can't detect RTW1.5 or BI1.6 first.

Secondly if I complete the install anyway and try to run the game I get the error unable to find skeleton 'fs_s1_semi_fast_barbswordsman'.

I was thinking of just borrowing the original BI off a mate, seeing if I could do another clean install and patch that but play it using my 'white label' budget disk.

I think that you should upgrade your RTW to 1.5. it is in 1.3. NOT 1.6! That is the BI version that is 1.6. not the RTW.

Hmmm, well I managed to borrow my mate's copy of BI, did a clean install and was then able to patch BI to 1.6. Consequently the XGM installer worked fine and I can now play via either the BI or Alex .exes.

So a word of warning for anyone in the UK who buys the white label budget release of BI (which is pre-patched to 1.6) - you might not be able to use any mods with it.

I was so pleased to see a thread with this title, but my joy turned to dismay. It looks like I, with my White Label budget version, will be unable to play RTR.

I've tried all manner of fresh installs, patching routines and so on. The problem I get is, when I try and start a campaign, that it asks me 'To Select something from the list', or words to those effect.

Sadly I have no handy mates who can lend me a 'real' copy of BI. Is there any indication as to how I can get RTR to work?

    Thank you kindly.

There is always the option of using Torrents, since you already have the game with a CD and cdkey...

Alright Guys I've got white label version and after initial problems as stated above I have got it working.

Firstly don't install Alexander - and secondly don't install the First additional mod when the option comes - can't remember what it's called now, but think it was something like - BI Skeletons or something.

So basically, uninstall everything if you ahve already installed it. Install RTW and the RTW-BI, then Install the RTRP without the first extra mod thing and you're set.

I have only just got it working and I have just tried a couple of turns and a couple of battles and custom battles etc etc and it is all good so far. Will let you know if this changes

I have the White Label edition of Rome only - I have bought it for mods like Roma Surrectum, so I don't really care about the expansions. I just want to get the game working.
