ooc1: Do you realised that the no. of troops killed hardly ever equals the actual difference between troops deployed and troops remaining at the end of the battle?

ooc: I suppose that's true, but if you look at all the ammo bars of the hastati, principes and velites at the end of the battle, they are all still on full ammo, and there was no other unit in that army that had missiles...

This being the full report on the attack at Agrigentum.
After receiving orders from the Proconsul Marcus Valerius, I Military Tribune Servius Labienus was given the command of the second legion stationed at Lilybaeum.
After bringing the legion out of Lilybaeum we marched toward Agrigentum and the last of the Syracusians.
Their scouts picked us up in their sights a day before we reached the city and the Syracusian army moved out swiftly toward the harbour.
Having realised that the army was no longer stationary I doubled our pace to catch them before they reached the port.
It was no easy task and after being on their heals for more than two days they finally gave battle.
The odds were in our favour and the enemy general having more years in the field was better equipped at handling a foe than I, this being the first battle I commanded.

Coming over the ridge the Syracusians had already lined up for battle.
They had the upperhand having chosen the ground the battle would be fought on.
I however had the ridge. I did not know how this would play out but I knew the men I had with me would do the job.
I have served with them under the Consul Decimus and now they serve under me as tribune to Proconsul Marcus Valerius.

Using my slingers we drew the Syracusian army into the trap. They sent their first wave against us but it did not stand.
Their second wave was a pultry display of courage.
    Their third a dismal effort.
In the end I gave the order for the legions to move forward.
I marched in the front line and when I could smell the blood off the field I ran.
I ran with every breath in my body.
The sweet smell of victory was in the air and I was entranced.
In a frenzy the battle was on.

Some of our cavalry did not fair well against their archers who for the love of Juno would not stand in one place long enough to get a legion too.
They are fast those cowards hiding behind their bows.
In the end I ran to one of the horses still tethered by the fallen comrade.
With his reigns in my hand I led the charge for those mangy mentula.
    We rode them down.
The earth will sow better crops with the dead of those archers now fertilising it.

    And so it would end.
The trumpets sounded and victory was ours.
Covered in the blood of my enemy I walked among the wounded to see where I could assist.
I sent the last of the cavalry to catch those that escaped and personally help build the crucifixes for them.
Their bodies will be hung to show Rome has no mercy for her enemies.
The soldiers hailed me Imperator on the field.
The sound of their voices touched my heart and my soul.
This is what I live for.

I provide the statistics for your perusal Proconsul Marcus Valerius.

OOC: Caesar, I had asked the save from Maxinius yesterday to play a few turns and I have made many changes since then... I guess you'll have to re-play your battle over again...

    EDIT: Huge Consular report underway!

ooc: that will be annoying. Or you could just work from Caesar's save after his battle. After all, you are just doing building and agricutural upgrades right? And in my opinion it takes longer to play out a battle than to add some farms/mines etc to certain regions.

I have created four fleets up to now; I have constructed forums, farms, aqueducts, dockyards, forges(the highest blacksmith upgrade), temples and we have 130,000+ denarii in budget! You are almost asking me to rebuild the Republic!!! Anyway, the Proconsuls were supposed to get the save after the term, no? Plus Caesar hasn't uploaded the save yet and I'll have to wait for the save... again...

    Senators of Rome
Lucius Aurelius and myself have reached Syracuse.
We have docked in the harbour for provisions and will be on our way shortly to Carthage.
I trust all is well in the senate and hope that the next letter I send to be to the delight of the senate.
    I truly miss Rome.

    Consular Report
    Economy and Constructions

    --------

As promised, here's my work for Rome!

I started off by constructing Temples, Forums, an Imperial Palace in Rome and a Consular road(henceforth to be known as Via Decima to my honour), some barracks, some Governmental buildings and by finalizing the agricultural reform in the newly added Sicily. I then proceeded by constructing...

Barracks and Aqueducts in some cities...

And by investing into the Military Factories. Now all our cities can provide our legionaries with top armour, weapons and training before our brave men face the enemy!

I also comitioned the construction of the biggest ever assembled fleet for the Republic, a fleet that will hold away rebels, pirates and enemy nations.

    Pretty impressive, nay?

    ------

Many may complain about the cost; It cannot be denied that at the beginning of this gigantic construction assignment, we had many losses. However, our treasury has recovered completely and provided double the money we had before in no more than seven turns!

    Consular Report, Part II
    The Military
    -------

    Our brand new fleets!

Our fist fleet is docked in Ostia, protecting the Eternal City.

Our second fleet is in Syracusae, keeping watch of the newly added island.

    Our third fleet is located in Caralis, Corsica;

Finally our forth and strongest fleet is docked in Tarentum.

    OUR LEGIONS:

I haven't yet taken any action to reform our legions than to find the first Consular Legions(I recruited the first cohorts in every city so that we can recruit the legion later on if such a vote is passed...)

Sextus studies the reports and is impressed by the work the Senior Consul has managed to do. He only has one objection:

Wasn't my relative Quintus Marius to be in charge of Sardinia and Corsica? If so, why is the Senior Consul building the fleet there?

"The Republican fleet was a plan for the entirety of the Republic; Italy, Sicily, Corsica and Sardinia so it is in my jurisdiction to construct it... Also, let us not forget that the Senior Consul is the supreme administrator of the Republic for a term -- our relative, Quintus Marius, is the Governor..."

A messenger enters the senate chambers

"This being a message from the Tribune Lepidus, traveling in Africa."

Imagine my surprise, senators, when I heard this morning from a messenger that our noble Consul has defied the sacred authority of the Senate and has built nearly four full fleets without permission. Who gave this man imperium, and for what cause? Where is the battle that this new navy, paid for at the public's expense, will be fighting? This is an unacceptable overreach of Consular power; to raise an army, whatever the intentions, without the express permission of the Senate and People of Rome is not the behavior of an honorable Roman.

Were I in Rome, I would have vetoed this navy building, which makes me wonder why the Consul chose now to unveil his plan. But it is no matter, I trust that the Senate will follow the law and make sure that this criminal act receives just punishment.

    Lucius Aurelius Lepidus
    Tribune of the Plebeians.

Sextus Julius quickly hurries to the Constitution tablets and reads the Constitutional ammendement on Imperium:

    a. The power to utilize all resources (moving armies, recruiting men, hiring mercenaries and retraining battle worn battalions) to achieve a goal set by the Senate.
    b. The power to conduct any operation given to the wielder as he pleases without having to consult the Senate on matters of war.
Sextus is unsure who's side to fight for, as he has connections with both, and yet both have correct points of argument, and incorrect as well. He proceeds to explain his decision to be neutral upon this matter:

The consul Brutus has certain points in his favour.
    1. As of now, we are still at war with Carthage, and definitely fighting against the pirates, so is able to take action against those two enemies without the Senate's agreement.
    2. It wasn't a goal for this term, but I'm very sure that I was told by Quintus Marius that it was one of the goals of the Senate a term or two before to keep Carthaginian sea power at bay, and that is certainly what the Consul is trying to do in this situation.

However, Tribune Lepidus also has some fine points to make:
    1. The Consul hasn't been given Imperium for his term yet.
    2. He only outlined his naval strategy in his beginning of term speech, yet the notion was never voted on or agreed by a majority.

Since both sides of the argument have rights and wrongs, I resolve to remain neutral in this matter.

"What will you have me do, Tribune? Shall I disband the fleets? I have stated the first days of my term that I wished to create the strongest navy for Rome; there I was clear. Also, since we are at war with Carthage, I believe I have Imperium to fortify the State!"

This being the tenth month of the Consulate of Brutus and Publicola.

Having arived in ostia the tribune Lucius Aurelius and the censor Servius made for Rome.
They had finally returned after six months either at sea or in foreign lands they had done what Rome wanted.
The months away from the city had not been good for Servius as he felt it in his bones.
    Time was slipping away.
He felt older than ever before.
The contio was called for the following day after they had arrived back in the city.
Every senator in Rome was there for this occassion.

Servius having dealt directly with the Carthaginian senator named Theodekles was the one to give the report back to the senate.
Carthage made every effort to display Romes weakness to their populace.
They highlighted the fact that we were there begging not to fight.
As the triubune and censor made there way to the senate hall the carthaginians that escorted them and their lictors made no attempt to stop the spitting and hurling of rotten food at these guests.

Once in the chamber hall Servius made his case that war would see no victor.
Armies would be lost on both sides and Rome was not ready to sacrifice her legions in a war that would last decades.
They sat and listened with what seemed and open ear but it was not the case.
After we had left they obviously discussed these terms behind closed doors.
Eventually this Theodekles revealed himself as the speaker for the Carthage empire.
We were to negotiate directly with this man.
His hair oiled back and reaked of women fragrance.
No esteemed man was this but more of a rat from the lowest drains.
I Servius Labienus asked for ceasefire for a war that saw no victors.

He looked at me and smiled out of the corner of his mouth.
A most frightful expression from a man of his nature.
His words were for us to make haste and he did not have time to waste with the likes of us.
After considering our proposal he felt a counter offer may be better.
    So I offered trade rights.
What more could see both nations increase their wealth along with a ceasefire.
In the end he demanded a tribute from Rome to the amount of 60 talents of silver.
30750 denarii paid over the course of one year.

How could I, a proconsul and censor of Rome accept such terms.
    No.
I again made my offer and again he rejected saying Carthage needed no truce.
It would wipe Rome from existance if it pleased.
I could not make this vile creature see the light of day.
In the end after hours of negotiating and coming to no conclusion we ended the days discussions.
Again I pleaded to their senate to make amends.
It was in everyones interest not to hold grudges that niether side had ever made in their lifetime.
It was our forefathers I told them.
Not us that is among the living.
In the end the tribune and myself left the city of Carthage for Rome.
And senators this is the news I bring.
An enemy for as long as Rome remembers does not want peace.
I can tell you now from sources in Carthage that their empire reaches as far the kingdom of the Ptylomies right down to Numidian Africa.
Once we had a buffer being Syracuse.
Now that island is Romes and the buffer does not exist but for Marcus Valerius.
I now leave the floor to the Tribune Lucius.

This is another mark for the Consul's argument. We are still sadly at war with Carthage, and as our Censor said, it could well last decades.
