thank you sicily is finally conquered horray!
Upon hearing the news of the fall of Lilybaeum, the Optimates in the Senate cheer and Tribune Corvinus cheers with them.
"Finally, the deed is done. After three years of bloody conquest, Sicily recognizes the Republic of Rome as its master. Syracuse has been struck down, Agrigentum has been razed, and the Africans in Lilybaeum have submitted to the people of Rome. Consul Brutus, you are surely worthy of a Triumph! Hail, Imperator!"
Pvblicola enters the chamber clapping loudly and says
Well done Brutus!
You have defeated a foe that plagued the "mighty" Carthage for centuries in a matter of months.
his tone less complimentary now
But we cannot sit here and drink to success, for the victory of arms was half the battle my friends, for now we must begin to decide the future of these isles. I for one wish to see the best governors from Italy sent to Sicily, for it is a land of richs that exceed our own, and in the hands of our brightest men, can offer a supreme tool for the development of Roma and Italia as a whole.
Come, come; we cannot sit idly! We must pursue this issue and bring to Roma, a new age of prosperity!

sicily is our largest deposit of grain now, we must defend it properly
Take the most able governors, I know not them all, from the main land and ship them to these places and pray some roman values rub off on them, while their tax receipts fill the treasury so that we may expand our already booming economy.

are you talking about me?
Marcus Valerius hears discussion on who should be the Proconsul of Sicily, and his eyes open widely. He almost nudges the Senator next to him to ask if he can nominate himself (Marcus) for the position, but he realizes that he is Tribune of the Plebs. He cannot, by law, leave Rome for more than one day.
"Maybe we should vote for the next Proconsul of Sicily in the upcoming elections. Things would be more organized, since we would know exactly when the Proconsul's term would end. Plus, we should allow the People to speak their minds and vote, instead of appointing a member of our august body without consulting the assemblies."
ooc: I almost forgot: welcome back Wode!
Yes good friend. We need someone to lead the new provinces.

but lets just nominate the person without them actually signing up like going up to them and asking them after the vote
i was no tputting you donw for the role, I merely suggested you would do a fine job. By all means if you cannot perform the task another soul shall have to be found.

I suggest that Tribune Corvinus run for the role. I believe this would be an excellent chance for the tribune to prove himself, like he was stopped from doing in his consular term.
And of course, this position will be voted upon in the elections.
Marcus Corvinus jumps up from enthusiasm and surprise; he didn't expect the leader of the Populares to nominate him for the role of Proconsul, since he speaks out against Populares whenever he can.
Calming himself, Marcus speaks:
"I'd happily run for Proconsul. I was not allowed to do my duty to Rome during my time as Consul, and now I want to prove to the People of Rome that I can perform what is asked of me."
let the man prove his worth, ill start a new thread as im still junior consul
The Senior Consul enters once more the Curia, wearing the Toga Praetexta instead of the military uniform he was used to after all these long months. The whole senate thunders with applaud as he enters the sacred Chamber, giving him honours for the successful campaign. Once the Consul is seated, he says:
"Conscript Fathers; Greetings!" Ave! shouts in response the whole chamber.
"As the Senate wished, Sicily is Roman. Our forces are masters of all the island and there's but a small force of Syracusan scum remaining in the island, moving up and down pointlessly; we can crush them at will.
However, do not be fooled. This campaign was not my only concern! As ordered by the Senate, I started the agricultural reform in all of Italy and even further I started a large construction program by building roads, ports, temples and some military facilities throughout the island; I will not deny it, these constructions have had a toll on our treasury(we have approximately 25,000 - 30,000 denarii) but I assure you that when the facilities are done it will repay the investment.
Here's the reports for the Censor to check on our Republic.
Having said that, I do not wish for any honours. I do not want a Triumph or the Corona civica or anything that you may give to me in joy of victory. I only ask this: That you entrust to me for a second term the office of Senior Consul. Let me complete my vision of Rome - a Rome that will be well guarded, prosperous and rich. A Rome that will be the major superpower in the Mediterranean. A Rome that will be respected by its allies, turned to for justice and favour by neutral powers and feared by its enemies. A Rome worthy of Rome!"

Consul Decimus, as a friend and senator of this most august body. How can you ask this of us? A unconstitutional act by far. You are the consular and by far a proven general among your troops but we have no threat at the moment and this act would be on the verge of appointing you dictator. Help me understand friend Decimus.
