Thread: What book are you currently reading?

I found Book of Mormon rather dull, a very weak replica of the Bible. And Joseph Smith was the biggest gogue in the American religious scene. Very smart to accidentally "find" some fake golden plates in a hillside then "reveal" that those are divine scriptures, and build a whole church on it. People tend to believe any piece of crock that is "revelead" to be divine.

Yeah.. I read some of it and it isn't that interesting. In that website you can read the Egyptian Book of Death Now, after watching the Mummy 1 and 2, I'm a bit concerned that I'll wake Imhotep up
    Sigh...

While waiting for the third volume of Oman's masterwork to arrive I decided to shift to fiction for a change. Picked up Robert Penn Warren's All the King's Men and so far it's a pretty interesting read. I was compelled to purchase the book after seeing the movie in HBO and it looks like an interesting and timeless take on not only American politics but human nature and interaction as well.

Yeah, I think Dawkins is a brilliant evolutionary scientist and all, but he really gets on my nerves, especially with his arrogant "unholier than thou" attitude

Decided to educate myself on naval warfare and picked up one of the sacred texts of naval studies, The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1660-1783 by A.T. Mahan. The author, a naval officer and professor at the Naval War College in the U.S. is regarded as one of the leading theorists in naval studies. The book is said to have influenced the Kaiser in rearming Germany into a world power before World War I, and the two Roosevelts are said to have taken to the book avidly. Here, Mahan argues perhaps for the first time in history the importance of naval dominance which every global power should strive for, have, and maintain. While the writing is nondescript and the maps not as good as they should be, it's an important work and good history, and the details on the battles of the time period should be instructive to us waiting to play Empire.

Lord Jim by Joseph Conrad, I'm liking it alot. Started reading it on my vacation but left it at the cabin, so now I'm in a sort of limbo of not reading it but still reading it

'The American Indian wars'; Howard Hughes.

It's a short book only 88 pages, but it chronicles the wars fought by the various tribes against the army during the 1800's. Focusing on the actual 'battles' rather wider cultural history it's based on eyewitness accounts and doesn't pull any punches. One of the best books I've ever read, (if a bit depressing) ..

This Pocket Essential Guide charts the savage series of battles, treacheries, massacres, and ambushes that shaped those turbulent years. It recounts all the key engagements, from the Minnesota Massacre to the Battle of Wounded Knee, often using eyewitness reports of the time. It also offers an in-depth analysis of the Battle of the Little Big Horn, and attempts to separate the tall tales from the truth.
