Praetor Report of Quintus Marius Parthicus
The Consulship of Brutus & Equestris
And so we begin our third Consular term. Up until now, this Praetor's thread has been pretty empty, so I believe it is now up to me and my trusty wax tablet and stylus to start doing the job.
The First day of the Consular Term
The Consul is immediately off to Sicily to start his duties in subduing the Syracusans and throwing the Carthaginians off the island that rightly belongs to Rome and it's territories. His further aims are to improve the economy of the Roman lands so it yields more money and profit.
Back in the Curia, senators are each expressing their own views on the building of the ports, roads and the recruitment of further legions. Senator Marcus Aelius Triarius (Maxim Victor) proposed the building of ports to aid sea trade and to blockade the ports of Carthage as part of the war against them. He also proposed the building of roads. At the moment, most of the senators are in favour of the building, however, many are believe that the blockading of Carthaginian ports is currently unnecessary, and some are also talking of a ceasefire with Carthage once the Sicilian war is ended.
Our Junior Consul Equestris has also appointed the official positions in the Senate:
The Censor - Tiber Imperius (CK23)
The Princeps Senatus - Marcus Porcius Catō (68 Powers)
The Second day of the Consular Term
As we begin the second day of the consulship, we receive a message from the consul via his brother in law Caius Cassius. He has started of his term by reviewing the armies under his command, both of which are in Sicily, one besieging Catana, the other Agrigentum.
From reports of his deputies, our consul finds that his second legion is seriously depleted. He is proposing to the Senate to send home some of the exhausted and wounded men back home to meet their wives and children and to rest, after they have completed the siege of Agrigentum and captured it. In replacement, he is asking for further reinforcements to be send to Sicily. After many mass debates between members of the Populares, Domini and Optimates parties and a few hasty votes, it looks like the Consul will have his way.
An agricultural reform proposed by the Consul has also been passed by the Senate. This will allow our consul to upgrade all farming buildings and processes to the next level to make sure that our people have enough food and produce. It will also help our lands to gain more money and better trade. This motion has been voted for, and the end result is favourable. So may you all look forward to fuller stomachs when it comes to the winter.
In addition, we have had 2 new Romans joining the ranks of the Senate:
1. Marcus Lucretius Falco (Gaius Julius Civilis)
2. Vibius Aelius Lupus (Flavius Felix)
The Senate now consists of 14 members.
The Third day of the Consular Term
The first thing that came into the Senate this day was the report of our Senior Consul Decumius Brutus from Sicily. Attempting to capture the Syracusan city of Agrigentum with the depleted IInd legion, our esteemed Consul and his legates managed to defeat the 400 or so men in the garrison with the lost of only 100 Roman lives. This is a remarkable achievement, and we must thank the Consul for putting the people's interests at heart.
The Senate was filled with rejoicing and congratulations, so much that not much was done this day. The only major event apart from the Consul's report is our Tribune of the Plebs asked for a vote on the motion that
The matter is still being voted on.The legion of Corsica should be transported to Sicily to replace the IInd Legion
The Fourth day of the Consular Term
Another report from the Consul arrived this morning concerning the the Ist Legion beseiging Catana. The Syracusans had bought up three small armies in an attempt to dissuade our Senior Consul from capturing Catana. Considering that their numbers amounted up to close to 900 men, and they took our Consul completely by surprise at night, he made a magnificent show of the situation, and weakened the Syracusan army with the loss of no more than 100 men yet again.
The next part of this report consisted of the Syracusans' sally from their city. However, their back was already broken, and they had little power to fight. After hails of javelins and pila, the Syracusans were easily defeated and the city captured, though along with the deaths of 100 brave Roman warriors.
The motion to get reinforcements from Corsica to Sicily and replace the IInd Legion is going fully in favour of it. The current tally is YEA - VII and NAY - N, and is looking unlikely to change. The motion was passed later in the day at odds of 9 to 0, and many should look forward to seeing your husbands, sons, fathers and brothers of the IInd Legion again.
We also welcome/welcome back two senators into our esteemed group:
1. Publius Valerius Publicola (We shall fwee... Wode) - Welcome back
2. Tiberius Octavius Ulpianus (Tiberius Octavius Ulpanius) - Welcome
We now have 16 senators.
The Fifth day of the Consular Term
Today, we received another report from our consul, as he fought the Battle of Panormus. He besieged the Syracusan capital with just over 1800 men. This battle was totally won by us, with the loss of less than 200 men. The Syracusan power on Sicily has been crushed, and the end of the war is in sight. Congratulations to our consul for such a fine victory.
But before most of us even had the chance to say congratulations, we were extremely surprised to receive another report from the consul. As his cousin Caius Cassius finished reading and showing the pictures, the whole of the Senate burst out in celebration. Lilybaeum has fallen to the brave veterans of the IInd Legion, soon to come home. The consul has finished the war against Syracuse, and we Romans are now the power of the island with no one else to stand against us.
Rough battle statistics:
Cities captured:4
Men lost in total: just over 600
Enemies killed in total: over 3400
Generals/leaders killed: 7
The words "imperator" and "triumph" are on everyone's lips. Rejoice, for Rome has conquered!

Praetor Report of Marcus Iunius Brutus Caepionis
Consulate of Servius Labienus and Marius Parthicus
THE SENATE VOTES FOR WAR?
After the suicide of Decimus Brutus, the Senate has entrusted the Republic's leadership on the shoulders of Servius Labienus and Marius Parthicus and now it falls on Servius Labienus to lead the Roman Legions to victory when the vote of war finally passes. As of yet though, Junior Consul Marius Parthicus has not opened the official voting in the Senate, giving time to all sides to express their opinions. If anything though, there's but one truth:
By the fourth term, the Carthaginians had shown their true colours, firstly by asking for the impossible amount of 60,000 denarii in return for peace and then by kidnapping the Proconsul of Sicily, Marcus Valerius Corvinus. The Senate sits in Rome and the general opinion, as spoken by Decimus's son, Brutus Caepionis, is in favour of the African campaign. Even the stubborn and peace loving Tribune of Plebes, Lucius Aurelius Lepidus, has stated in the Curia Iulia that escalating this long in torpor war is not only inevitable but eminently desirable to him, too.
The only thing left to be done is to pass the Senatum Consultum for the invasion and then be ratified by the Centuriate Assembly, as law dictates. Then, it is up to all good citizens to fill the ranks of the Legions and punish the Punics for their wrongs against Roma!
PROCONSUL CORVINUS.
Marcus Corvinus, the Patrician Optimate Senator and Proconsul of Sicily who disappeared mysteriously during the last Consulate term, is still to be found. Recently though there was some new development as his son, Publius Valerius Corvinus, confronted a Numidian assassin during one of his nightly walks in the city of Syracusae. It is beyond doubt, after the dead body was found carrying Carthaginian coins, that the 'Senate' of Elders in Carthage has set their minds in re-capturing the island of Sicily.
Currently the Proconsul position in Sicily is held by Marcus Lucretius Falco, Corvinus's Quaestor, who is doing all in his power to keep stability and peace on the island while keeping the disappearance of Corvinus a secret. Even with the island been searched from top to bottom endlessly and all docked ships prohibited from leaving port, it is impossible that the Proconsul is still in Sicily. Sources indicate that a Carthaginian vessel was seeing sailing despite the self imposed blockade in the middle of the same night the Proconsul had vanished but the officials entrust that it is purely speculation...
THE SENIOR CONSUL, SERVIUS LABIENUS
The newly elected as Senior Consul, the renown Senator Servius Labienus, was sworn in the Curia today. The Consul did not trouble himself with providing any long speech about his future plans, in the contrary, he got down to business almost instantly after his nomination. The Consul demanded that the debate about the fortune of poor Corvinus should start immediately, after the plea of Corvinus's relative for a Senatorial decision. Labienus held the offices of Tribune of Plebeians and the office of Censor before his election as Senior Consul and he was part of the infamous peace delegation sent to Carthage.
FOUR NEW LEGIONS TO BE RECRUITED?
Consul Servius Labienus has decreed that he intents to recruit four full legions as a striking force for the planned African campaign. Currently there's no vote on the recruitment but, fortunately, no threat of a Consular or Tribunal Veto on the motion either. If the vote passes in the following Senate meeting, it will be the obligation to no less than 8000 Romans to enlist for military service! May such strong force bring the needed results!
THE ILLEGAL FLEET WILL SECURE THE SUCCESS OF THE AFRICAN CAMPAIGN?
After the warlike intentions were stated in the records, the matter of transportation and security for our legions arose. Facing a major sea power, the Senators though essential to 'legitimize' the fleet that cost Brutus's life in order to protect our ports from thieves and to safely carry the legions across to Africa without the fear of ship wreckage. As Tribune Lepidus said "it is ironic that the illegally purchased fleet will now be necessary."

WAR DECLARED!
The Senate finally got to officially declare war on Carthage! The Senators voted in crushing majority in favour of the war(10-1) and now it is only a matter of time before the Senior Consul, Servius Labienus, is given Imperium in Africa to wage war against the Republic of Carthage. All citizens are required to provide offerings for the success of our Consul, Servius Labienus! Long live the Republic!
FOUR NEW LEGIONS TO BE RECRUITED
The Senators have decreed that four full legions of the Marian style are to be recruited and sent to Africa. All good citizens that are currently enlisted in the army are expected to report to Campus Martius in full war gear.
FARMLANDS AWARDED TO LOYAL VETERANS?
The Senate discusses, after the proposal of Valerius Publicola, the possibility of giving out farmlands in Italy, Sicily or Africa for the veterans of the African and Sicilian campaigns. As of yet, there's no official vote but the Senate declares in favour of such a reform.

Edited, thanks for bringing that up!

THE PROCONSUL IS ALIVE!
Yesterday, to all the Senators surprise, a messenger came into the Curia carrying a letter; once read, the letter was found to be written from Marcus Valerius Corvinus, who is alive and well situated in Massilia now, pleading for the Roman Senate to help his liberators in their war against the Gauls. The Proconsul revealed the the city is currently overrun by the Gallic Hordes and that the citizenry begs the Roman State to intervene to their rescue; in return the wealthy port city guarantees its full cooperation and assimilation to the Republic!
AN ARMY TO MARCH TO MASSILIA?
After the pleading of Corvinus to rescue the Massilians from the Gallic Hordes, the Senate convened to decide about granting the Greek city's request. There were many Senators who agreed with Tribune Lepidus, when the man raised the issue of lacking military; in stead of an army, the Tribune proposed to send a legion from the Proconsulate of Corsica and Sicilia, since the garrison there is large. However, no further decision was reached.
IMPERIUM STILL TO BE GIVEN
No matter the request of the Senior Consul for Imperium in order to start recruiting the large invasion force that will end the war in Africa, the Junior Consul has still avoided opening the actual vote. The Senior Consul waits patiently as his term runs out fast and still no action against the Carthaginian transgression has taken place.
WEDDING OF LOVE OR POLITICAL UNITY?
If one event is equally chatted on and debated besides the return of the noble Proconsul, it is the wedding announced between the Senior Consul's daughter and the younger brother of Brutus Caepionis, leader of the Optimates, the boy known as Lucius Iunius Brutus. The wedding is to take place from one week from now, when the mourning of their Father Decimus - and the Consular Games - are over. Until then, the Senators can only speculate the true reason behind this noble union.

Praetor report
Senators, people of Rome! A lot has happened in the senate since the start of the new consulate under Quintus Marius Parthicus as Senior Consul and Servius Labienus as Junior Consul. Your humble praetor is Marcus Lucretius Falco, censor is Tiberius Octavius Ulpianus. The provinces are governed by Quintus Servilius Metellus in Africa and Marcus Valerius Corvinus in Magna Sicilia, their quaestor is as of yet undecided (?). The function of Princeps Senatus is being fulfilled by Marcus Aelius Triarius. We have but one Tribune of Plebs, but he is a talented one: Spurius Vitruvius Habitus, the man who made his debut last term by advocating caution and shadow diplomacy on the northern front.
It appears the northern front still causes controversy amongst the senators. After quickly deciding our former senior consul Servius Labienus deserves the honorific cognomen Africanus and the Grass Crown, Marcus Lucretius Falco caused a stir by advocating a very cautious rebuild and regrouping of our great Republic's army. Spurius Vitruvius Habitus further expanded the praetor's arguments by joining him and arguing the military advantages of the cautious position. The senate is now very reluctant if not aversive to engage in a fullscale war in Gaul itself, while debates are still ongoing about Gallia Cisalpina.
Some senators want the Limes as it is maintained, others want the city of Genoa conquered to secure the coastal road to Massilia while a third group wants to conquer Gallia Cisalpina entirely.
In other news: Traders can breath easier as slave prices are finally going up. The influx of Carthaginian and Gallic warslaves caused the market to overflow with unwanted slaves, the recent uneasy peace on all fronts stopped new slaves from flowing in, thus causing the prices to rise once more.
Cnaeus Vorenus asks for news about his brother, will offer money for information.
To all veterans of Legio II who served in Sicilia living in Rome, the second round of land-offering is about to start.
Drink Sicilian wine at Lucius Pompilius'. All you can drink for one sestertius.

Second Praetorial Report
The Senate has reached an agreement and Genoa is taken! After lengthy and - quite frankly - unfocused debates went on for days the motion was voted upon, and passed. For unknown reasons the Senior Consul chose to wait another two days before attacking, but none of that matters now as Genoa is finally Roman. Citizens rejoice.
It is quite possible that the Consul chose to wait for a legion which was engaged in the War on Brigands in the southern part of Italia. This war has successfully ended when after defeating some of the gangs, other gangs simply dissapeared. Some critical senators wondered if the operation was worth the use of an entire legion.
In the meantime debates in the senate went on about at least two different subjects at the same time. The first was to send an envoy to the Greeks to offer an alliance, trade rights and a small territorial request. After some senators questioned the feasibility of the territorial request, that element of the proposal was removed and a ceremonial map exchange was added. Voting is still in progress, but it seems most senators are in favour of the alliance and even more are in favour of the trade rights and the ceremonial map exchange.
The second was the conquest of Bononia. This was proposed in his plan for the last days of his consulate. Some senators oppose this plan, because it will bring us within striking range of the Greek City States. The value of the city to the republic is also being questioned. Voting on this matter has also commenced, and a very small majority of the Senate openly supports this motion. That said, only a very small minority actually openly opposes the plan.
A smaller debate started from the second. What would the senate think of conquering Gallia Cisalpina entirely? Debates on this have not yet passed the preliminary phase, but I have a hunch they will during next term.
A note-worthy side note: Tribune Vitruvius actively defended the consul amidst all the debating. This is note-worthy, because the tribune has no allegiance to the consul, nor do they share major ideas. What caused this sudden defence, or what its consequences are, is as of yet unknown.
-----
In other news: Lucius Pompilius has been arrested for cheating on his customers. He offered allegedly Sicilian wine for a very cheap price, while it was actually Latin wine mixed with water. He is still awaiting judgement.
Hostility toward Gallic foreigners has reached new heights yesterday, when three Gaulish traders were lynched by the mob after being accused of cheating. The people's tribune has asked everyone to stay calm and reveal the perpetrators to the authorities. No one has been arrested as of yet.
Cnaeus Vorenus is still looking for information regarding his brother. He is getting slightly worried and has offered a large reward to those who have any.

Consulate of Parthicus and Corvinus
All of Italy is in Roman hands.
The Greeks gave us the northern lands for only 10000 denarii and we never lost a single man.
But now we must concentrate on securing our borders and refitting our legions.
The honour of doing that was given to Marcus Lucretius, who traveled to Athens and spoke with the Spartan king.
Massilia is besieged by Gauls who continue to send hordes to retake the city.
Yet roman steel will defend it and the Gauls will be beaten back to their lands where they came from.
Also, the senate has passed the motion to send Servius Labenius to defend Massilia due to his great skills in defending the city before.
The Junior Consul has been given approval to start a huge and costly building program. It will improve the health care in our cities and make the populace happy, also increasing our profits.
The Greeks are hostile toward us and I predict they want to destroy us on the first chance they get.
That's why we need to keep our main force's to the Greek border. Who will help?
----
In other news:Maxentius Brutus has been caught again in a farm near Tarentum molesting his cattle.
The fool was brought to the city and his hands were cut off.
The hands was nailed to the entrance to show the people what punisment animal molesters will get.
Wine from Sicily has got cheaper because of the good harvest this year.
And due to the Roman navy, the transport is safe and the wine is constantly brought in.
In Capua, games are held due to the marriage of the city governor.
The games will last 10 days and there will be free bread for the audience.

O Sancta Simplicitas!
Consulate of Spurius Vitruvius Habitus et Tibeirus Octavius Ulpianus
Praetorial Report of Quintus Marius Parthicus
This term has got onto a rolling start, with debates, motions and reports all already happening.
The Princeps Senatus for this term is Manius Velius Octavius
The Censor for this term is Commodus Flavius Aelius, one of our new senators
Servius Labienus Africanus in Massilia
At the end of the last term, esteemed Consular Servius Labienus of the cognomen Africanus was sent by the Senate to relieve the city of Massilia from another Gallic assault. As Labienus knew the streets and people best, having defended it from Gauls in years before, he was considered to be the most worthy of choice.
And in the end, the choice was apparently a good one, for Labienus destroyed the Gallic army in a clamatic battle resulting in a heroic and crushing victory for Roman arms, sending the Gauls fleeing away back into the forests of their homeland. Yet in this battle, not more than 200 Roman legionaries lost their lives.
New Legions
This topic has come up many times in the past terms. With the Gauls still our enemies, and the alliance with the Greeks constantly on the edge of being broken, many senators are in support of a major recruitment frenzy of legionary training, both for a passive and offensive defence of the lands of Rome. This motion is still currently being voted for.
Another matter concerning legions is Servius Labienus' request for what he considers his personal legion Legio IV Ferrata based in Capua to join him in Massilia for defence against the Gauls, as he believes one legion will be too stretched to defend the various ways to Massilia. This matter is also being voted on, but it seems like Labienus will end up having his way.
Envoys to the East
Another motion has been set up to see a division on whether to send diplomats to the east, asking for trade rights and any other agreements that could be proposed. The aim of this is to gain more funds for the Treasury, which would result in a greater capacity for more legion training and construction
ooc: I only just realised that the domain for my picture is www.vitruvius.be which coincidentally includes the nomen of our Senior Consul!

Praetorial Report II of Quintus Marius Parthicus
Marcus Aelius Triarius to be eastern envoy
Senator Marcus Aelius Triarius has been doing research on the conditions of many eastern countries, and after his investigations, he found that many of those would probably be willing to accept trade rights. According to him "trade with the Kingdom of the Cimmerian Bosporus would bring in a large amount of money" and though they are a Greek based civilisation, apparently they are well fed up of the current Greek system and are currently building up a new type of living separate from the land of their ancestors. Because of his research, he has been recommended for the job of envoy, but no motion has yet been passed confirming it.
Instigation of War with Greece
There has been talk recently of us declaring war against Greece, therefore adopting an actively defensive position against them. Suggestions have ranged from amphibious invasions to the bribing, defection and assassination of Greek armies and generals to weaken the Greek power before a force is sent against them using diplomats, spies and assassins. Proconsul of Sicily Publius Valerius Publicola has even offered help in the form of manpower for this offensive against the Greeks. However, this was all before....
The Greeks declare War!
Yes, it seems that the Greeks, instead of waiting for us to attack, have made the first move themselves by besieging a fort occupied by our Legio I Germanica. This move will have moved some other factions' view on this war to our side, as they now see the Greeks as the protagonists, and us just trying to protect our lands. Anyway, the Senior Consul has moved north with Legio VIII Augusta to intercept another Greek army doing a Hannibal and coming through the Alps. The legion of Marius destroyed the Greek army only to come face to face with a Gaulish army. Hitting through them as well, they chance upon another Greek force which they also defeat. Now quite understrength after all their battles, they have built a fortification and are now waiting the arrival of reinforcements.

Praetorial Report III of Quintus Marius
Success on the Greek Front
The Greeks, having invaded our lands, laid siege to the city of Patavium. Our Senior Consul, guarding the city, kept the Greek hoplites and other troops at bay, and destroyed that army of theirs, gaining a heroic victory for the armies of Rome. Everyone has been congratulating the Consul, and there is much celebration around the city until news comes of the next episode in the war, which takes a much more despairing theme....
Disaster on the Greek Front
Our esteemed Consul's brother Decimus Vitruvius, defending an eastern fort against a large Greek force, did battle with the Greeks when they tried to assault the fort. The Greeks were vanquished and repelled, yet at the loss of almost half the garrison. Decimus hurriedly recruiting mercenaries to strengthen it. But the Greeks brought up another army, this time outnumbering Decimus' troops over 2 to 1. The Legio I Germanica put up a brave and acknowledgable fight, but along with the cowardly mercenaries, they were unable to hold the fort, and Legio I Germanica is now destroyed. There is talk of keeping Germanica disbanded to commemorate all the Roman lives ever lost in battle, but especially this one. It is a black day for Rome....
Attack on the Greeks?
To counter the Greek attacks, there has been recent talk about starting an amphibious invasion into the heartland of Greece to weaken the power of the Greeks and force them to divert their attentions elsewhere. This invasion is to be preceded by spies and assassins infiltrating the Greek settlements and causing unrest and destruction. The current proposal is around 3-5 legions being sent for this task, but the task itself has not been voted on.
