OOC: Winter, my friend, I think you outdone your self this time! Great AAR, kept me reading on and on, waiting to see the victory result. But instead of "bravo" clamours, I'm gonna rep you for it!

IC: Decimus Brutus was astounded by this victory; while he always enjoyed a good battle outcome, he was always suspicious of men gaining too much power - as all Romans were. Alas, the Consul deserved a good word this time though, so he stood and with calm face he said:

"Conscript Fathers! I feel that this is a victory worthy of Rome - the enemy is utterly crushed. I will wait for the Consul to arrive back in Rome, as his term is over, and give him the honours he deserves in person. Well done, well done Consul!"

Quintus Marius ponders over what he is going to say before he stands:

I believe our Senior Consul deserves a triumph.

Marcus Corvinus freezes when he hears Senators proposing that Consul Lepidus should have a Triumph. He almost goes into a blind rage, but he simply takes a deep breath and reminds himself that he is better than that; he is a Senator of Rome. He slowly stands and calmly speaks:

"I disagree. Consul Lepidus has simply won a single battle. A battle, may I add, against untrained levies. Sicily still has to be subjugated, and not a single city besides Messana and Syracuse recognize us as their masters. Syracuse still has money, troops, and generals. Syracuse also commands the complete loyalty of its peoples. We still have a long war ahead of us. We still have to capture Agrigentum and Catana."

Corvinus almost sits down, but he lets his rage get the best of him:

"Triumphs should only be granted to men who have actually accomplished something!"

ooc: guys, I've won a single battle. If we give triumphs out for single victories every consul will be triumphed.

    Look at the facts:

    1) I wasn't able to capture a single city (albeit due to political stalling of my campaign...)

    2) I didn't advance us territorially anywhere else

    ...

maybe I should stop giving you ammo...

"Senator Marius, while I am happy for the glory of our Consul I must agree with Corvinus on this one. A triumph for two victories sound a bit... extreme. Surely the Consul can understand the logic in this argument and turn down the offer himself." Brutus said trying to calm down the spirits. The last thing he wished to see only a month before elections was the Senate divided for a Triumph; that could sully the whole business.

"We could still find a good way to celebrate the glory -- I personally propose Consul Lepidus be given the Hasta Pura, the silver spear given only to those that have wounded the enemies of Rome; as Lepidus has. What do you say, Senators?" Brutus was content with that. He sat and awaited for the quick acceptance of the Hasta Pura; the Consul would have nothing if not the spear and all sides asking for this irrational triumph would realise that.

A messenger of the Consul arrives in the senate

"I bring word from the Consul"

"Senators, I have recieved word from friends of mine that some of you wish to honor me with a triumph. While it is a great honor even to be considered, I feel that I cannot accept this hallowed award. Triumphs belong to generals of great renown; those who conquer mighty foes. I have been able to do very little here in Sicily during my term, and I do not feel comfortable being compared to such giants of men. Therefore, I must respectfully decline. I will not march in triumph."

    Consul L. Aurelius Lepidus

OOC: But winter, we gave the Hasta Pura in YATS I for a similar achievement, to you again, so I believe it is appropriate. We could always rename you to L. Aurelius Lepidus "Sicelicus" for victory in Sicily, if you like it...

    OOC: Ok then, "Graecus"...

IC: "I wish to alter my proposal, Senators. I say that instead of giving our Consul the silver spear, lets give him the name "Graecus" to accompany his full name from now on, an honour to remind us of his victory over the Greeks in Sicily."

Consul Lucius Aurelius Lepidus steps through the door of the Curia...

"Senators, my term draws to a close. I thank you, with some minor exceptions, for the unity expressed this term. The focus on our war has drawn it closer to its close."

Consul Lepidus sits in his Curile chair, for perhaps the final time...

ooc: Here's the save. I don't feel like writing a report, so just check it out if you have any questions.

Marius stands to acknowledge the words and comments of his fellow senators:

Since our consul himself has turned down the offer of a triumph, I will recall the idea and save it for a better use when a victory of greater significance happens. However, I believe it is not really the the Greeks but more like the Syracusans or Sicilians that our consul has vanquished, so I believe either a cognomen of "Syracusus" or "Sicilicus" would be more fitting.

ooc: Maybe would should set up another piece of legislation that sets down the requirements of a triumph?

Senator Corvinus stands to denounce the cognomen award to Consul Lepidus:

"Consul Lepidus has won what...two or three victories? Victories that weren't even significant. The only victory that he won himself was the latest one, and all he did was crush a few levy phalanxes. Are you implying that the Consul should be awarded with the cognomen "Graecus" because he killed a small amount of untrained wretches? So, if I killed a few Macedonians in a bar-fight I'd be awarded the title "Macedonicus?"

The cognomen wasn't my idea, I was just trying to make it more fitting if we gave him one.
