Sorry, I've searched around but I can't find anything.
Is there any set way to expand the battle map?

The battlemap draws off the campaign map (base folder) so the scale of that map will determine the scale of your battlemap. I'm not a great fan of spending ten minutes walking across a battlemap to find the enemy though

I think it would be more accurate to say it is the other way around because
The elements on the battlemap, like vegetation, buildings and characters, don't scale and battlefields are always generated from the same number of map pixels. Creating a map where, say, all of Sicily fits on one battlemap doesn't enlarge the battlemap at all, it shrinks sicily.

You may be right but I have certainly noticed different mods start off with armies at considerably different distances from each other. I cannot remember if it was an early lotr:tw or metw (I supsect the latter) where some time had to be spent to cross the battlemap in order to engage battle. My mapping skills and knowledge are certainly not my strongest area though.

You can change the distance between starting armies in a custom made battle but not in the campaign I dont think. I've done the former but not the latter.
