The Populist Party



Platform:

I. The equality of all Romans: We believe that any Roman, from Plebians to Eqvites to Freedmen to Patricians, are equal in the eyes of the Gods, and the Roman government should reflect this.

II. On Slavery: We are against slavery on a large scale; It takes valuable jobs away from hardworking Plebes. However, small scale slaves, such as house slaves, are tolerable.

III: On war: Wars should only be initiated when there is a just cause for doing so, a Casus Belli. Expansion of the economy or Roman territory is never good enough reason.

IV: On the economy: We firmly believe that development of the economy, and thus jobs for the unemployed, should come before any military expansion, unless in a time of war or emergency.

V. On the Romanizing of conquered peoples: We favor the gradual integration of the conquered peoples, provided they: learn the Latin language, honor Roman gods, submit fully to Roman authority, and demonstrate civilized manner.

VI. On Membership: All are welcome in the Populares, from the Patricians to the Proletariat.

This is an alliance proposal from the Tenth Legion. I have negotiated some terms with him here. If you Populares agree (well, you Popular) then make a post voting yes and we will be allied.

Proposed alliance: the Dominus party

The terms of the alliance
1. The Dominus party must remove from their goals the goal about expansion being good for Rome. It must be replaced with something that sounds less war-monger like.

2. Dominus party candidates must gain office every so often or the alliance is dissolved.

im not a popular but just proving his word. I will greatly see this to be good alliance as we both have rome's best intentions in mind and dont like the optimates. I will vote yes to have my dominus have an alliance with you noble senators.

ooc: Tenth legion, if you only want to ally with the Populares because of what I said on the Optimates' thread, then I don't consider that a good reason for an alliance, because characters aren't supposed to realize what political parties are talking about in their threads unless the character is in that party.

No real concessions had to be made because the parties' two ideologies were very close.

I agree. At the moment, with the large amount of Senators gathering in the enemy party's camp, we should gain as many allies as possible.

Sorry, I checked the candidacy thread and I'm confident in our victory!

Are we going to debate on which the candidacies are going to be, or it will be completely individual? Some organization will not be useless.

The Populares don't sponsor official candidates, but instead encourage all party members to go out for any position they want to.

Currently I am the only Popular running for Tribune.

Recently we've only had two members, so organized voting hasn't been really an issue. Right now, we are in the process of forming a populist coalition party between the Mollis, the Domini, and ourselves. Once matters of platform have been hammered out, I am sure that your concerns about sponsored candidacies will be addressed.

We work together in the Populares, if you have any ideas, please raise them. Its important that we embody the change that we want to see, so we don't have rigid, class like leadership hierarchies here.

I have an instant question that comes in my mind. What's our economic policy? I mean, not only the one stated, economy above military. I believe corruption will stem if the Republic becomes too wealthy. We should think about a law that somehow limits the economic overgrowth.

I'm not sure, but since I am running for Pro-Consul of Sicily against a Optimate opponent Marcus Valerius, if I can get into the position, I will do my best to help Sicily yield a good harvest and profit, though not over extravagantly.
