Default [RTR AAR] AAR: Latin Empire!

First AAR for my modded RTR

    General Changes:
    - 0 turn recruitment for all non-elite units
    - all cavalry units increase their number by 33%
    - barbarians have access to high-level cities and buildings, but with less law/health effects.
    - double income from mines; huge trade effect for places with silk

    Faction-specfic Changes:
    - Sarmatians are unplayable and much more aggressive. They represent the whole steppe people and thus their units are ultra-cheap, and their lands have huge penalties for non-nomads (-100% law and -100 health). However their HAs cannot be recruited outside of scythia.
    - Carthaginians and Numdibians are unplayable and peace-loving. They represent a group of traders and native people, they have no city outside of north africa and no battle ship may be built. Their lands also have large penalities for outsiders (-50 law, -50 health and +100 growth)
    - Greeks can build City Barracks, Athenian Colony, and Corinthian Colony, which allow recruitment of previously city-specific hoplites in all places.
    - Spartans and Carthaginian Sacred band Infantry/Cavalry have unbreakable morale.
    - New units from discarded models: Armenian cataphract archer, Pontic cataphract, Greek companion hoplite, and Greek heavy cavalry.

    LATIN EMPIRE AAR

It's the special year of 1 AD, 100 years after the end of the last and most horrible punic war - in which both of the Roman Republic and the Carthaginian Empire fought to death. The republic is long gone and the italian peninsula, outside of the city of Rome, is now ruled by various barbarian tribes. The Carthaginians are not better either, as most of their adult-age men were killed during the war, they are reduced to a tiny state similar to that of ancient Phoenicians. Their commerce thrived in the next one hundred years and the wealth was largely restored, but their citizens also grow with a strong fear of war - and so they disbanded all navies and hoped not to offend any faction or even engage war once again.....

In the half ruined, once the great city of Rome, our leader Quintus, who claims himself to be the last Roman noble, is reading an old scroll of the battle of the Trebia, wondering how the Republican soldiers in his grandfather's time managed to break the line of Carthaginians, against all the odds, and retreated in calm and order, even through they had been seriously defeated. And he looks at his army - despite being harshly trained ever since he took the position, they're still far from the old, good republican legionaries: disicipline is nearly non-existent, and some of the italian natives seem born to be bloodthirsting, more like wild animals than human soldiers. And the fiercest, religious samnite warriors, are really mad butchers - they just cannot stop killing enemy on the battle field. The last report says they, in the scout team to north africa, went berserker upon encountering a small carthaginian army who has no hostility against us, and slaughtered every of them under no one's command:

So what should I do? He asked himself. Since his birth, he's been taught to achieve the only one goal in the life - rebuild the once great Republic, to rise from the ashes and ruins. And he hadn't shamed his ancestors; the city is taken back, barbarian tribes are surpressed, and trade and farming are being rebuilt. But he is 47 now, death comes closer and closer every day. Yet his city remains underdeveloped, his soldiers skilled but hard to command, and he neither has the wealth nor the manpower to expand outwards, not to mention to reclaim the southern towns which the sneaky greeks stole after the fall of the Republic..........

So here we are: A roman faction with half-barbarian, over-priced armies, while everyone else in the world have access to all the civilized goodies (barbarian Aqueduct, highways, ...) and post-marian units.

Preview of the new army - from AOR Italian units and mercs:

    Roman faction changes:
    - Hastati/Principes/Triarii/Legionaries are removed
    - Unit: Latin Legionaries, modded from AEE Hannibal's Veteran Infantry, represent the old and good, disciplined, Republican soldiers, who can only be trained in the Legion Barracks (upgraded from the Roman Citizenship).
    - Unit: Latin Infantry, modded from AEE Samnite Hastati, are the shock heavy infantry of the new army, but they're impetuous like barbarians
    - Unit: Latin Skirmishers, modded from Italy Velites. Their cost is doubled, but carry one more javelin as stated in wikipedia, and their melee combat skill has been enhanced. The skirmishers are now the largest portion of the army.
    - Unit: Latin Syrian Archers. They have been made romans-only and can be recruited in italy and other places if higher-level barracks are present. Like the skirmishres, their cost is also doubled and the hand-to-hand fighting skill is improved, so they may be used to break demoralized light infantry.
    - Samnite Warriors, modded from AEE Samnite Spearmen, are religious zealots fighting in old hoplite style. They frighten nearby enemy and could become berserker during battles (yeah berserker hoplites!) - but they wear very little armour, unlike elite units in other factions.
    - No more equites because they had been made enemy of the state during the last war - a punishment for their failure against carthaginian cavalry. Untrained, low-morale AOR cavalry is all we have now.

And the last, all italian infantry units have the cost/upkeep increased by 50% to 100%, with small adjustment on stats.

The campaign will be played on H/M, begin tomorrow!

    House rules:
    - Lose the campaign if in dept (IMHO this should be a hardcoded rule in RTW)
    - Low tax all the time. The italians are a chosen people by the gods and should not be taxed.
    - All foreign bastards must die after we capture their cities, and their evil buildings are to be razed immediately. While the italians must not be harmed in any way after battle. - CANCELLED, all cities must be exterminated unless they're ours before... The rebels in VH really borthered me
    - Automatic-resolving battle may be used when more than half of the enemy army are HAs or cowardly skirmishers - CANCELLED because I added the armoured archers
    - Retreating from battle field is not acceptable. If an unit routs, it'd be disbanded and all men in it are punished to death (feed rebels/pirates).

    ---
It's my first AAR, so please point out and correct me if I use any wrong word/sentence

    So it begins......

Our capital, Roma. It looks all good until you read the population - only 4000! Well the infrastructures are here, but we're not earning money - in fact we're losing big bucks of money after lowering tax.

So the immediate action is to disband armies, begin with the crazy samnites: they're very experienced but our poor empire has no use of those religous idiots for now, perhaps after a decade......

Then we build watchtowers all over the border, and make some deal with the smelly gauls:

They accepted and seem quiet liked it - they fools But no, we can't kill them first, because several italian cities are currently occupied by the greek thieves - their death is the top priority for now.

But their armies... hmmm seems a bit too much for us..

.... horrible elephants, too bad we have disbanded the samnites, who are the only ones dare to fight elephants face to face......

    2 AD, winter.

The spies returned with information of the enemies - a nearly full stack of gaul barbarians were detected to have moved beyond illyrians' borders; and the greeks, after signed cease-fire with us (or rather, merely notified us their decision to cease-fire), attacked other italian cities - who, even though being rebels, are still one of us. It's really an insult to the once great Roman people, but we can do nothing but accept....

Before the end of this cold, long winter, our leader finally made his move - attack the rebel town Paestum. It's all but a small town, but better than none, as we're really desprate in need of money now. The battle began, more like a hunting game to our soldiers - those untrained italians simply can't withstand even our skirmishers:

In a few hours, the rebels were crushed and the city was taken back, all citizens spared and their properties are kept intact, despite the strong objection from our soldiers. The people are grateful and willing to pay some tax to our leader, but it's not that benefical without looting, and now we're one step closer to the greeks.....

    6 AD, summer.

The king sacreficed his life during a siege battle against italian rebels, the last ones before we march into greek controlled cities. He and his guards heroically charged into a wall of pikes, and it's too late to pull him out when the bodyguards realized those damn spearmen, despite being already demoralized by javelins, were not broken at all under the charge.

Our new leader, Publius Cornelius Scipio, is happy now. After a decade of planning, he finally got the chance to send the poor Quintus to hell, by urging all cavalry to charge but retreated himself in the last moment. Yet his position is not firm and the empire is still weak; to avoid being assassinated, he began to force rotation of all city governors every year - by doing so they can never gain enough personal loyality from local troops and citizens, and academic central, Roma, in which they will stay every 7 years, may also help them improve management skills.

    6 AD, winter.

An astounding news is brought by our ambassador in Carthage: to defend against the dirty Numbidians, they're willing to open trade and make alliance with us now. The gold from the upcoming trading routes will fill up the treasury and certainly accelerate our plan to take back the southern cities..

Cool units from ME:TW are added:

    Variag Swordmen

Eastern swordmen, wielding a long slashing sword (spatha?). They're like enhanced version of greek hypasist swordsmen, but with much heavier armour and carry no shield for fast moving.

    Variag Chargers

Eastern lancer. Medium-armoured and fast-moving. The name is confusing because they carry a short spear and thus have rather weak charge power, but unmatched melee combat skill makes them kind of general-killer.

Both units are very expensive and not cost-effective for frontal assault, as they are really *special forces*, and may only be trained in the Imperial Barracks (2 levels up from Roman Citizenship).

Cheers and great thanks to the ME:TW team!

The greeks finally came to Corfinium, after hanging on our border for 2 turns. It seems they didn't notice a large army nearby....

But they just retreated without a fight upon seeing our army:

Their army which ran away from battle field is caught by our spy network - in the city Tarentum! Without hesitation, the king immediately marched all his armies, including half of the garrison troops, to launch a siege, with help from a spy whom we have installed for years.

The strategy is simple: send latin skirmishers to clean up their gate-guarding hoplites, and use heavy infantry to cut their archers into pieces.

Next, their generals: (the hetaiori isn't that good huh? )

They still had some backup hoplites and Ippiko, but nothing serious:

Now victory is ours! It's not very heroic, but always worth to be celebrated when you kill a greek

    End of turn report:
    * greek soldiers killed: 609
    * greek citizen killed: 4706
    * latin soldiers died: 153

    10 AD, summer

The great day has come! After suffering several humiliations on battle field, the Greek king, Pyrrhus, launched a major assault by himself, with the last army he still has on sicily.

That's the greek king before battle:

And the armies of both sides:

We set a formation, intended to lure them to the hill and die under the skirmishers' javelins:

Somehow they realized our intention and changed the marching direction; Our formation was completely broken up, turned into mass melee fighting... But at the most dangerous moment, their king Pyrrhus decided it's time to show his greek courage: by charging into two units of skirmishers alone, but soon his bodyguards got stuck and routed, turned the tide of battle..... all for his stupid behavior:

Now their army is over, and their last stand.. doesn't last long however

A hard victory. But they no longer have any army left - while they still have one barracks in Syracuse, their economics has been down to the bottom in which they can no longer produce troops (bad war against macedon?)

The king ran away, trying to hide in their small town. But nothing can escape our spies.

And you know what happened next

End of 10th year! Bed time now.....

The campaign was killed by stupid gauls, who had a boat stuck in a port which illyrians just captured. move_character or kill or kill_faction, taking the city or whatever just cause CTD.

I'm restaring a new campaign, VH/M, and remove faction illyrians and greek cities. Expanding becomes very hard because AI rebels make full stacks for defense whenever my army gets close. I also began to use samnites in battle, as the berserkers are effective in scaring enemies:

In the last battle two samnite units alone defeated more than 8 hoplites and turned the tide of battle:

The enemy units began to rout just after some 1/10 of them are killed by the samnites, who are only slightly stronger in stats...

I'm willing to send my mod to whoever want it, but releasing it publicly may bring some issues. It's not just stats changes, but also several new models/units and music from other mods, whose authors may not grant me the permission (well I'm at least sure about the music - EB's )

    47 AD, summer

20 years has passed. The empire prospered under peace and stability, as nothing could threat us after the collapse of greek cities alliance. Rebel italian cities were all crushed and we're advancing into previous greek territory. But the prosperity comes with great cost - a generation of royal families who had too much wealth and barely know how to count, let alone to govern a city. Even some of the professional generals are affected: lazy, being drunk all day, and have "refined tastes", as they call it themselves. There is no corruption, though, thanks to previous king, Scipio, who declared governors may use up to a third of his provincial income publicly for any purpose, as long as they send another one third to the king's personal treasury.

"I did the necessary thing to save the empire...", the king, Vibius Cornelius Sulla, talking to the kids in the royal house. "Sometimes you must do evil things to avoid greater evil, even to harm your families and friends" he uttered to them.

"WE TOOK THE RHODES! WE TOOK THE RHODES!", a messenger riding in front the house, announced loudly and interrupted Sulla's teaching, "THE COLOSSUS IS OURS!!".
