    Rusi II. Total War this is the root folder of the game.
    (I have several versions installed, but errors in all the same).

    Could you compress and attach the full log? I have a bad feeling the real trigger that's breaking this farther up.

    I think I have the expanded.txt.strings file error, the campaign crashes while loading. I recently spent my time editing the names of things in the expanded file, but
    i didn't remove anything or add anything. Any ideas?

    Maybe removed a closing bracket by accident?

    'Import' the TXT file with the BinEditor and then scroll through the entries on left side - if you get weird stuff (wrong line entries) on the right then you get an idea where the problem might be.

    I am currently attempting to get a map mod up and running based on Gigantus' bare geomod folder, but am getting a constant CTD after selecting a faction. Map.rwm does generate, despite the log saying otherwise. I suspect it has something to do with either a misplaced pixel or a landmass bug, but the log is not particularly helpful. The other possibility is that Steam is messing with the mod folder somehow- there are a lot of "missing files" and some of them are not present in the bare modfolder. Do I need to do anything with the .bin files, or transfer over some of the unpacked data files? I don't think that I should- if it were an issue with the loading bar, for example, then it'd probably CTD at startup rather than showing said loading bar. Figured I'd ask here as there's way too many cars to chase as to what the log itself is telling me.

    Does there need to be more than two/three regions for the map to load properly at startup?
    Does the landmass hardlimit apply solely to regions? I assume not, given how vanilla and modded maps have a bunch of little islands.

    You must tell us when, exactly, the game is crashing. If you selected a faction in the menu, clicked the start campaign button, and then it's crashing during the loading bar, we need to know how far the loading bar gets. The warnings in your log do not indicate critical errors from missing files - bare geomod has everything needed to run the game, you don't need to unpack any additional files.

    How many regions are on your map? The landmass limit (of 20) applies only to regions, not individual islands. A region can contain as many islands as you want.

    A crash as soon as the map is done loading can be caused by a faction in descr_strat not having any regions on the map.

    I click on the start campaign and it crashes right at that point after generating map.rwm. My guess is that it's probably a misplaced pixel or something; I'll check again when I get home.

    I have three regions atm with just England and France- my goal is to get the map loading into the game and then add all the regions one at a time to be safe. I wasn't entirely clear on whether the landmass bug applied at first, but I figured that it didn't. I had however heard of the 10 regions minimum as either a requirement or a "requirement" for a decent map performance.

    Presuming this means that there's a mismatch between the city location and the height map, from what I've been gathering fixing it seems to be just trial and error. Is there a height floor for the height_map values, and/or do I need to have the map files in Indexed color mode or something?

    As I suspected, it was a descr_regions issue. Now comes the hard part of shaping coasts, adding provinces, etc. and then the scripting, units, and everything else.

    Question re- settlements.

    What requirements are there for a black dot to be a valid tile on descr_regions? Specifically, is there any requirement other than that it not be on mountains or other impassable terrain or border any other province? IE is there a size requirement for a province (say Malta) beyond the minimum of a 3x3 square.

    I encourage you to use TW Map Reader when editing map files. It will point out a lot of errors and warnings, but not all of them are fatal. I don't remember if placing a settlement on a tile bordering another region is fatal or not, the log and/or map reader will complain about it. I do know that you can put settlements right next to sea tiles, the log complains but there is no problem with it. And using sea tiles, you can make regions that are much smaller than 3x3, in fact I would assume the minimum is 1x2 (one tile for the settlement and one to indicate the region color). You're forcing the game to guess which region the settlement belongs to, hence all the log errors, but my experience has been that the game usually guesses correctly, at least with sea tiles (i.e. it knows the sea has no settlement).

    There are caveats to this for very specific cases. For example, putting two settlements on diagonal tiles will result in a crash when an army from one attempts to besiege the other. I'm not sure if you will even get a warning about this in the log. If you put a bunch of inaccessible terrain in a region, be sure you don't create pockets of accessible terrain or else the reposition_character (teleport to random coords in the region) becomes unsafe, and it can confuse the AI if pockets only open onto neighboring regions.
