    Default Downfall

Quick review as I am short on time.
    Movie is Der Untergang ("Downfall")
Great movie. Highly recommended for people interested in that time period.
It is in German with English subtitles which adds to its immersiveness.
This is more of a re-enactment than a movie. It is raw and feels very genuine.

Yeah, it is probably one of the best movies I've seen in a few years.

A great movie indeed. Those germans sure know how to make great WW2 movies (Stalingrad, Das Boot, Der Untergang).

Downfall for me is the best WWII-themed movie which does not actually have much battle scenes.

Downfall is my favorite war movie, I just think it is so important.
Rather than see Hitler as this monster of history and place him on some pedestal and mythologize him, we witness the last days of this pathetic old man who is losing his dreams (however twisted and horrible in reality) he's broken and pitiful.

And so we see him as being ultimately, human. Something much more important to understand than understanding what he did and why.

    y'know, i loved this film.
i just cant understand the criticism by some namby pamby jewish groups about a possible 'humanising' of hitler.
i thoguht it was a wonderful film. and as historically accurate as they could make it- they even alluded to the mass rape of german women by the soviets in a scene.

It was a realistic movie, it didn't flirt with mythology of the situation, but rather the things that made it real, the humanity and all its manifestations, it's goods, evils, ignorances, prejudices, everything we can experience in a lifetime, it doesn't give divinity or some hellish equivalent quality to what happened, it just lays it out, and the end result is infinitely more real than anything before it.

Seeing them as the human beings they were was far scarier than portraying them as some bloodthirsty satanic cult. These people did not see themselves as evil. They truly believed in the ideas of National Socialism and their Furher and it led them to do some horrible things. In the end we see that Hitler did not care about the German people but rather his own ideas and his own hatred.

I was laughing my ass off but I was also impressed by Bruno Ganz performance. He is amazing in this film. The other actors are great as well. You will feel like you are watching exactly what happened.

Hitler was an insanely nationalistic and idealistic demon. He wanted to do what he thought was best for the Fatherland, the German people and eventually Europe as a whole. I believe he cared so much about his people however he also demanded them to meet his ideal in order to be considered a model German citizen while those who failed to do so were deemed unworthy and deserved to die.

I thought the same when I saw this movie.
Having a baby-eating Hitler would have been so stereotypical that it would really have no effect.
However seeing him smiling, crying etc was more scary.

Downfall is a masterpiece that should be watched by pretty much everyone.
Bruno Ganz performance was powerful, he pretty much stole every scene he was in.
The actress that played the wife of Joseph Goebbels and while doing what she did(no spoilers but those that watched the movie will know what I'm talking about) was probably the scariest and eye-opening moment in the film for me.
    Gave me goosebumps.

I dunno if you guys noticed it but I saw what I thought was a nasty scene when Hitler kissed Eva and his saliva kinda stuck. YUCK!

Great film but I came away with the impression too much of the script was influenced by the writings of that deceptive creep Albert Speer, most notably his scenes when he claims to have defied Hitler.

Firs time I watched the movie, I thought this was really well restored footage from the actual event. Then I stepped back and thought how stupid that thought was.

Still Bruno Ganz is not just a convincing Hitler. He becomes Hitler. Not something that happens to often... thank God.
Do not forget that washes your hand after I always killed. You time is to be going to die. Muahahahaha. I well to be speaking English.

Don't worry, he'd be so pitifully weak you could take him down or run off without so much as a scratch I thought Goebbels was excellently acted; probably the best of the lot in my eyes.

I'd been studying figures like Goebbels in the Third Reich prior to watching it, and I found going into it knowing a fair bit about all the the people involved made it an excellent aid to getting into my head exactly who these people were; ultimately just as human as you or I.
