    Default Valkyrie

On July 20, 1944 Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg entered Wolfsschanze (Wolf's Lair) near Rastenburg in East Prussia. In his suitcase were concealed two small bombs. The rest is history and now it is a movie by Brian Singer.

Singer had some excellent moments with "The usual Suspects" and "Apt Pupil" and some, well, it depends on the taste moments with the X-men series and the rather lame Superman revival.

The story is intriguing and it became more intriguing post-war when it was elevated to a scale by which Wermacht was measured. Many officers went in great length to prove their association with the Valkyrie plot, others as Guderian strives to prove their ignorance (there are two pages in Guderian's autobiography where he claims he had a stroll in the park during the plot;litterally).

I really wonder how deep in the rabbithole Singer will descend. A worrying sign is that the Prince of Scientology is playing Stauffenberg (eye patch and all).

    Mission Impossible?

    tom cruise?

way to tarnish what could have been great, the plot line will now be:

Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg is a bomp plotter, he's a pretty good bomb plotter too until he has a crisis of confidence and can't plot anymore. that is until he meets a beautiful woman who helps him get his confidence back and he plots like he never plotted before.

Tom Cruise is unfairly treated - because it's fashionable to do so and for no other reason. He appears in satisfying movies. The Last Samurai, Minority Report, War of the Worlds - none of this stuff is what you'd call high art but it does the job it sets out to do with efficiency. I can't think of a Tom Cruise movie I've seen that I didn't enjoy on some level. And he's a Scientologist, you say? So what? I couldn't care less about the man's personal life.

Tom Cruise may be a raving lunatic and have downright scary worldviews in private life, but as an actor he usually delivers.

I gotta say though, I didn't like the trailer much when I first saw it. It feels too much like Hollywood wanting to inject their usual overblown drama into this assassination attempt by a bunch of disgruntled military aristocrats.

I have heard bad things. With the amount of money thrown into it will be entertaining enough. Cruise is a great actor. These people are told what to do and they do it. It is unfair to critique their work according to their lives.

Researched this film a few weeks ago. Looks good. Funny thing is, the German govt didnt want Cruise involved due to him being a scientologist.

IIRC, the family retracted any misgivings about it.
The German government, IMO, acted unreasonably in condemning Cruise just because he's a Scientologist. His religion has nothing to do with his acting ability.

And I have never, not once, been disappointed Tom Cruise's performances in films. The only film he was in that I didn't like a lot was War of the Worlds, and he wasn't the reason I disliked it. It was the stupid screaming girl and arrogant son that messed that one up. Everything else was great.

So, I am looking forward to Valkyrie. Looks awesome.

    Default Valkyrie

I saw Valkyrie yesterday. I'm not at liberty to say how historically accurate the film is because I don't know much about the July 1944 plot other than the basics. Overall though I thought it was very well done and enjoyable film. I thought that Tom Cruise did a pretty good job as Colonel von Stauffenberg as well.

Your thoughts? (And of course anal critiques on historical inaccuracies)

I think Tom Cruise is a great actor, but if you're getting paid so much money for a role can't you at least TRY to put on a German accent?

I would rather them not use corny fake German accents.

My aunt went to see the movie and told me she enjoyed it very much. She is an elementary school teacher and a history buff. However she also didn't know much about the July plot and told me after seeing the movie she was going to go get some books on it.

So I guess it impressed her.

Either speak German or correct English. Not this fake cheese German accent that doesn't sound anything like a real German.

If the Movie is set up with Germans speaking english, then there's no point in giving them fake accents. The audience got the idea already.

Well almost all the other Germans save for Cruise have some sort of European accent.
