Politics
In EB 1, the optimates/populares trait is not really exploited. Politicians change sides for all sorts of reasons, namely a change in loyalty, so, to make use of the new loyalty and authority feature, either the senators change faction if the leader is too weak, OR, the are populares if their loyalty is too low, the populares trait would also carry loyalty penalties, so that hopefully, when a weak senate leader ( like the principate) To mimic the scenario before the Civil War, the three highest ranking (senatewise) populares could form a triumvirate, which causes increased corruption, but also makes them far more likely to be elected to higher posts and gain command and experience. The main thing is that in Medieval 2, I think it may be easier to bring about the conditions of the Late Republic, which was the reason for the Marian and Augustian Reforms, you wouldn't get a Marius or an Octavius without it.
