Vibius Iulius and his legion still camped in Liguria, protecting the Roman border from Barbarians. That’s where he engaged in battle with Vindex, a leader of 2.000 Gauls. The Hastati did the job together with the equites, rich citizens who can afford a horse. What followed was a terrible loss… for them.Caput V: Finishing the job
The year is 213BC – The Consuls are Q. Fabius Maximus and Ti. Sempronius Gracchus (second time).
In the month Aprilis Quintus eliminate the last Carthaginian life on Roman soil.
Quintus and the rest of his legion, which consisted of 900 men, took on the mob of Vettias, which was 600 men large. They where all slain, except of fifty men. Who spread out over the Italian Peninsula and where welcome in no village and eventually died in nature or were murdered by dutiful Romans.

All these things caused an increase of popularity by the senate, they now look favourably upon the “faction” Iulii, who just call themselves Romans.Caput VI: Securing Italia
Whilst some skirmishing went on at the Northern border, Quintus advanced towards the city of Taras, which rebelled when Hannibal arrived. It was now occupied by Samnites and other tribes. They call themselves Calabrians and declared their independence. We call them dead men.
At the Nonae of the ninth month, Quintus’s legion arrived at the gates of Taras, which was protected by 2.000 men.
A wooden wall stopped them from marching into the city. Quintus shouted “A wooden wall? As if that will protect them!” And the rams went to the walls, it was a dark night, there was no moon. As if the Gods already decided about the Fait of this town.
The walls fell and the young men of Roma stormed in, slaughtering every Rebel in their path. The last Rebel fell to the ground and a deafening shouting filled the night. After that, it became quiet. The streets where filled with the body’s of “Calabrians”.
Italia was secured. Peace returned in the South.
Quintus’s Legion could rest, but not for long…
Caput VII: Taking back what’s oursThe year is 212BC – The Consuls are Ap. Claudius Pulcher and Q. Fulvius Flaccus (third time).
Vibius faced an army once more, this time consisting of 1.500 savages, who were easily butchered. The Senatus has granted him a Large Triumph for this Victory, because he send 25.000 enemies of Roma to the Afterlife.
After this success against the Gauls, things remain quiet at that border, apart from some skirmishing.
The year is 211BC – The Consuls are P. Sulpicius Galba (first time) and Gn. Fulvius Centumalus.
In Southern Italy, a new conquest begins. Under the command of Quintus Iulius, a legion attacks Messana, to take back what is Roman!
Theages, the man who took Messana by force four years ago, still rules this town. Quintus was disappointed seeing that the citizens fully accepted the Carthaginian oppression and were no longer Romans.
The Hastati took down the walls and fought their way in. Quintus later describes this moment in his military dairies;
When the Hastati were fighting their way to the town centre with four cohorts they met Theages and his personal bodyguard, they fought fiercely and a man proved that he was a true Roman: Marcus Olivarius, centurion of the first cohort faced two bodyguards on his own. He killed them both and later fought with his friends at the town square. This men was given the medal of braveness and is now a hero in the cohorts of Hastati.
Theages was killed in the fighting and two units of Hastati reached the last defence. Quintus himself was present and witnessed the massacre;
When the surviving men reached the last stand, they were considered being tired, but nothing was less true. Like wolfs they fought for the town square! They attacked as a predator on his pray. They slayed every Carthaginian to the last man.
So was this city Roman again, but the inhabitants weren’t pleased with this new ruler, Quintus enslaved almost 4.000 of them to the Italian city’s.
But he wasn’t satisfied with this, Carthago had killed his men, taken his city’s, ruled his fellow Romans. Now it would be their turn to rule!

Caput VIII: The Carthaginian Dispel
This conquering had surely caused the people of Roma to think better about this family who first was called “Dictators”.
The noble Greeks who rule a Peninsula in the Aegean sea came with the demand that the Senatus and People of Roma had to surrender and bow for them. Lucius Iulius told this Greeks that the Romans will never submit to a foreign ruler. Flavius was deeply humiliated and this demand would later make the faith of the Greeks.
Quintus sent scouts forward to spot the defences of Lilybeon, a city in the West of Sicilia. When he was just informed the scouts ran into an ambush and were utterly butchered.
The year is 210BC – The Consuls are M. Valerius Laevinus (second time) and M. Claudius Marcellus (third time).
The Senatus requests Flavius Iulius to send a diplomat to make peace with the Germani, an uncivilized and savage folk whom live over the rivers called Rhine and Donau. This task lay upon the shoulders of a man named Tiberius Maccius.
Vibius’ legion faces a Gallic army 800 men strong, which he defeats and thereby kills 2 Gallic leaders, who are named Bolgios of the city of Durocortorum
<the most important city of the Remi tribe, which was later on called Reims> and Calpornus of the city of Vienna, through Hades’s gates.
Meanwhile Quintus and his lay siege to the city Lilybeon, enwalled by stone, which is in the hands of the baby-killing Carthaginians. They didn’t stand a chance against the well-trained legion of Quintus Iulius.
More then 9.000 inhabitants were dispersed as slaves to Roman cities.
The Senatus was pleased seeing that Flavius not only freed the Roma from her enemies but even enlarged her territory.
Quintus doesn’t rest after his victories, but he prepares for the conquest of the last Greek polis on the Sicilian island. Syracusa is heavily fortified and many armies surround it. Quintus, knowing that he cannot fulfil this task alone, forms a new legion which he puts under the command of the sixteen year old Luca Calvia, who is called a natural born leader.
Caput IX: new land to conquer
The year is 209BC – The Consuls are Q. Fabius Maximus Verrucosus Cunctator (fifth time) and Q. Fulvius Flaccus (fourth time).
The new General Luca C alvia is ordered to meet this new foe and marches into the region they call Sicilia Graecus. He had barely entered the region when the response of the Greeks came: one of the finest armies, under command of the leader of the Greek City States, Dionysios of Sparta himself.
L. Calvia heard from his informers that Dionysios brought more then 300 men of his home city with him. These Lakedaemonians were known for their few talking and superb fighting, probably more for the last then the first.
The fresh and untrained legion now faces a challenge that is equal to suicide. But yet, L. Calvia orders his legion forwards and defeats the Greek army!
After the counting of bodies they found out that they killed exactly 338 men from Lakedaemon. Dionysios died, stuck between Triarii and his own fellow citizens. Another man, still young, was also slain by L. Calvia’s men.
While the legion was reforming, Luca passed by a destroyed Greek Temple, he didn’t know that within years, all of Greece would be similar to this Temple…
A great victory it was, the troops their morale was high, they loved their General. He was called “slayer of Spartans”.
But Luca himself knew that this wouldn’t last for long, they lost almost a thousand men, the Hastati were completely wiped out and the Principes were seriously damaged. They had to retreat or it wouldn’t end good…
