To show you how to do this, I am going to change the name of the Julii faction leader at the start of the game to Maximus Decimus Meridius (as I showed someone else how to do further down the posts )
First you need to open data\descr_names.txt
Scroll down this file to you find the faction: Romans Julii line

You don't need to change the surnames of anyone who has married into the family
Any name you add can be used for children of the relevant sex (and may appear on a child that is born in game)
Only males have a surname
If you remove a name (eg you want to change all the names in the faction), you will have to make sure there is no characters left in descr_strat with that name, either under your faction section or under the slave section following a sub_faction name. Eg if you remove Adalmun from the German section of descr_names you need to rename the general called that in the slave section of descr_strat, else the game will CTD

Similarly if you move a general between factions, you will need to make sure that their name exists within the faction list.
If the name exists under another faction section within descr_names, you don't need to add it again to descr_names_lookup or names.txt
