Hello everyone... IJ is a great mod.. especially the 355 campaign.. I had a problem while playing though.. I activated the script and then I organized the settlements and rounded up some troops in order to so I to have a good start for the war on the next turn.. after I click for the next turn, the year jump from 355 to 361 which is inappropriate...

Concerning Julian. His exploits in Gaul had made him if not a fine general and concerning his persian campaign, well Im not sure if that was just a stupid mistake or he did really have no plans for ruling the empire and just wanted to die...but if he had live for even another decade, maybe he would've altered a part of history there...

Have you loaded the IJV2.01a patch. It should fix that problem.

Hi, i just started playing this mod, in the 355 mod as Julian on H/H. My first reaction was great mod!!! Thisa was followed by uh-oh, there are rather a large number of unfriendly allamannic and Frankish stacks heading my direction, the economy is hopeless and i'm about 15-20k in debt per turn to start with. After two turns although i have destroyed the two saxon stacks in Britannia, one Frankish stack and about three allammanic stacks, my economy is still in debt and there are still heaps of barbarians (?) pouring across. What are other people's experience of playing as this faction. I can see a long slog might save Gaul, but seizing control of the east, including certain Sassanid provinces, now that is going to be tough with a capital 'T'. Really great mod though!

One question though, is there a slight discrepancy in the upkeep costs for the ordinary auxilia units, with 61 men, and other similar units which while having a similar upkeep, actually have 81 men?

    Hi billwestwater,

Glad you're enjoying the game. You've probably picked the hardest of the two campaigns to play. Yes the Gallic campaign is tough and your economy goes south for a while. You need to look after you troops as you wont be able to recruit any for a while. The only way to turn the economy around is to either disband your army, which with all the barbarians around is not a sound policy, or expand your territory by attacking Constantius II.

One question though, is there a slight discrepancy in the upkeep costs for the ordinary auxilia units, with 61 men, and other similar units which while having a similar upkeep, actually have 81 men?
Can you elaborate more for me on this? Which auxilia units are you talking about?

    Cheers, and good hunting.

What i mean about the slightly uneven costs for upkeep are that Auxilia cohors and light palatinae, with 61 men both cost 275 upkeep or about 4.5 denarii per man, while legio cohors with 83 cost 300, or about 3.5. The upkeep cost of these auxilia is closer to that of comitatenses which cost 468 for 103, or about 4.5 per man. I suppose its not a big difference.
About the choice of disbanding some troops or attacking Constantius to gain some income. Difficult choice!

One way to take on Constantius is to to take his cities that rebel against him. That way you gain territory without casuing the wrath of Constantius II, well at least till you feel ready to strike.

I'm not sure, maybe I did it before: I want say "Thank you" to Julianus Heraclius.
For your great mod and the authentic roman army.

It matches in a lot of ways that what I learned of the late romans and that what Pompeius Magnus wrote in his great Guide.
    I love the mod.

Hi again, thanks for the advice above about taking the Est Roman rebel cities. However, i have not been able to act upon it yet. At present the year is 369AD and i have been fighting the Picts, Franks, and Allamanni most of that time, fighting about 60 battles in that time. So far i've noticed that the Pictish military is fairly weak high in numbers but low in quality. The allamanii are similarly so, but every time you beat a stack another two spring up from nowhere. The Franks are the strongest of the three by some way, their francisca throwing guys can be quite deadly. It seems to me that the best early strategy is press them back over the Rhine. With the Allamanni taking Argentoratum is essential or else they siege Augusta V (this city has spent half the game under siege and has already narrowly beaten off two attempts to storm it. Just when i was ready to face the East Romans wouldnt you know it, they attacked me. One thing i have noticed about them is that they seem to have made peace with everyone except the Iazyges and the Ostrogoths, whereas IJ is at war with absolutely everone. I am only playing on H/H. That is going to make make conquering the rest of the Roman Empire more difficult, but what the heck! I was wondering, as someone else suggested, whether it was possible to somehow abbreviate Julians victory conditions in this mod. After all, he won control of the Empire by 360.

Hey what is it with you guys and the 355AD Gallic Campaign That is meant to be the provincial one. The main campaign is the 361AD unified empire one, though I have to admit, the 355AD is a challenge. And I love challenges.

What are other peoples experiences and views on this?

For me, the 361 campaign, as the Romans, is a bit scary and large. 85 provinces, bordering on about 10 enemy factions. The 355 campaign -as Julian - is more manageable.

Ah, you say it is more manageable but you are still fighting barbarians and it is now 369AD. With the main campaign, at least you have the resources of the whole empire at your command.

In relation to setting victory conditions somebody had suggested the possibility of scripting the situation that if Julian gains Aquelia then other cities convert to his cause, and so on.

This would require scripting, which I am not experienced at, but will check it out with Ramon. Though I do like the idea of fighting your way to victory.

    Cheers

If you manage well your resources the 361 campaign is not so difficult to master. On the western frontier thanks to Valentinanus Flavius , I pushed the Franks out, in Noricum it was the Legio Palatina that defeated the Alammani and captured Argento, and it was renamed Juliana Flavia. Legio units in Aegiptus where shipped to the Rhine frontier, where they are needed. The Emperor himself canceled his plans to invade Persia, and instead marched north to confront the Goths. After at least six battles they where exhausted and the Danube limes was safe. Sadly they had became so weak that in about 375 AD they where destroyed by the Huns. In Britania the Picts tried to invade the province, but where checked, they never tried again.

After successfully defeating the Goths the emperor moved to Persia, making Antioch his base. But the Sassanids are a very tough nut to crack, not like the northern barbarians. There was only one pithced battle won by Rome, but with very heavy casualties. So the Palatina Legion in the middle east had to be streghten again, but we are afraid to go to open war with the Sassanids again, so the hope of the Empire rest on Edessa. Till now the city repealed three massive attacks by the Persians. Well we need a diplomacy mod, the Armenians and Lachmids, pushed by their much more powerful allies, the Sassanids, betrayed me, but their armies are weak. The Iaszyges had some success, early in the game, capturing the northern city of Aquinicum. But now the Regional Army, with retrained Comitatenses and Sarmatian Foederati is ready to claim lost territory, having already defeated the horse masters in battle.

So the trick is to disband most of your cavalry, use your characters, keep the Scutari and Auxilia equites, and built up your economy. the Empire is huge, after 6 to 7 years your income will increase enabling you to upgrade your barracks.

    Cheers.
N.B Sorry for the long post.

Nice to read about the overall campaign. It has a laconic quality almost like a chronicle! I wouldn't mind hearing more as you progress!
