    Icon3 My Historical scans

    Hello,

I got a scanner on christmass so I upload some of my scans.
Here is a face reconstruction. The man on the left, was a 9th century hungarian (magyar) warrior, archeologist tried to reconstruct his face.
The right one is a teenager sarmatian woman, from around the 2th century AD (Great Lowlands of Hungary)

I have few english or west related books with pictures I can scan. Some of the books are hard to scan, as their pages are large or cannot be folded the right way to have them scanned, and besides that I have a few english book.

Most of the material I thought to scann would be either from antiquity (Pannonia most likely) or Medieval Hungary since most western readers have no access to these pictures, but a general interest in Middle Ages demands general and not particular knowledge.

I think few good pics are accessible about cumans for example.
Whether I have more neat stuff depends on your concepts..I can scan pics about viking swords as well, but not much scandinavian (i remember you mocker are scandinavian)or western.

Don't worry, we've got the western/nordic thing pretty much covered, what we need is Eastern stuff from the dark ages.

    Indeed! Very interesting stuff, Odovacar!

I'm struck by the similarity of the quivers used by the noble Magyar warrior and the Cuman warrior. A good design obviously doesn't go out of fashion! And the similarity between the two might indicate the common steppes connection as well.

Thanks. Well, I wont be at home for a while, but later I plan to continue scanning and uploading.
Since realtively few ppl are interested, that may be enough.

As a matter of fact the quiver did change during the centuries, mainly and I think lastly in the 13th century. The book describes the minor changes but essentially the design was good, the cumans only improved it a bit.

The sword of King Stephen the Holy.
It is now in Prague. There is a word on its blade: +Ulfberht
    bone hilt with Ringerike-styled markings.

The other sword was found in Felsőszeli-Horné Saliby (Slovakia) and it has one edge. Its unique in the Carpathian basin, presumably it was made in Norway in X-XIth century.

Two aquamanile, one from Kisjenő, one from Mezőberény (Hungary)
Aquamaniles contained water, sort of bowls. They are from the late XIIth century, depicting knights.

Sorry the scan is poor, as some colour problem appeared on the image. Because I cannot open fully the book one section of the picture remains blurred.

A picture taken from the book's cover, from which I scanned these pictures.
It is a famous belt piece.

It was found in Kígyóspuszta (Great Lowlands, Hungary, meaning 'Snake Barren')
From a tomb of a cuman chief. The late 13th century cuman elite begun to wear western weapons, turning to be knights. As they were changing from tribal nobles into feudal nobles they were seeking to adapt a more western-christian fashion.
