Default HOI2 resolutions and colour depths

    Hey

I picked up a copy of HOI2 doomsday, but I'm running into a rather major problem: the default (only?) resolution of the game is simply impossible to read on my 1680x1050 widescreen monitor; you get a headache just from looking at it.

Now apparently there are methods around for hex editing the game and then running it in windowed mode; I ran one of these (using 'Pegasus hex wizard') but ran into a few problems. Firstly, it wanted me to put my desktop to 16bit colour. Vista doesn't like this - it'll do it, but it'll complain Secondly, when I ran the game using windowed mode, it didn't actually display things to fill the screen, it just showed the normal resolution game with blank space in the rest of the window. Finally, trying to do anything in that window crashed the game

    Any ideas? :hmmm:

EDIT: gah, seems like it's not just me

You need to apply a mod first to get the hex edit working. But you can't because the mods homepage is offline.

But you can play in windowed mode.
    1. Make a right click on your shortcut to hoi2.exe -> properties
    2. make the link properties like this:
    3. "c:\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Doomsday\hoI2.exe" WINDOWED //change to your Path to HoI2: DD dir
    4. Turn the color depth to 16 bit in your Windows / driver settings.
    5. Start the game in windowed mode!
Windowed Mode is not supported by Paradox. It's only an option which can work, but not for everyone. It was edited into the exe for the developers in order to not have to alt-tab all the time while programming. It was discovered by someone browsing the exe file.

Sometimes you can't see any scenarios and save games after starting up in windowed mode for the first time.
The only solution is creating a BAT script that starts hoi2.exe WINDOWED. Alternatively, you could start a cmd shell and navigate to the hoi2 dd folder, and then start the game from there. But a BAT script should do it.

If you don't know how to create a BAT script, open up notepad and write:

cd /d [Path to HoI2: DD dir]
    hoi2.exe WINDOWED

Then save it as "hoi2.bat" (WITH the quotation marks).

Don't forget to dowload the Stony Road mod, this will make your game more enjoyable...

Okay, thanks all: I'm not sure whether launching from the bat, or using the script garb linked to worked, but one of them did

Ironically, I think that it actually looks better to run the game at the default resolution, windowed, though I imagine that will change with time

Now, to see how quickly I can lose

EDIT: 1680x1050 broke again; meh, I can live with 1024 windowed

Been using this way for a quite long time now on WinXP. No problems so far, no any kind of problems as a matter in fact (I don't use any .bat's or made any of them) on my natural LCD 1280x1024 resolution. Got used to it quickly after one week or so though (one play through with USSR), there is no way that I will get back to full screen.

Ah, so that's what accidentally leaving the AI aggressiveness on weakling does - it lets you coup both Germany and the Soviet Union before the end of 1940, without ever declaring war on anybody and with nuclear and ICBM research almost complete
