Seeing that the Senate is divided,I put forth a Vote of Confidence to Consul Lepidus abilities. That way we can clearly decide whether or not to further this Dictator appointment debate... Senators, vote now:
Motion of Confidence to Consul Lepidus:
    I trust him 1 - I do not 0

I am not in favor of a Dictator now as Lepidus is a great commander and he has decreed that he CAN destroy the Epirotes. Thus any further discussion on having a Dictator in current condition is against the interests of the Republic.

Added an Abstain option to the vote. Just so people can be political if their rp calls for it

There's really no opposition to this and I won't have much time tomorrow to do this so can I just fight this battle now? I don't see us getting 8 votes soon.

    EDIT

actually technically I guess I can vote on this

Motion of Confidence to Consul Lepidus:
    I trust him 5 - I do not 0 - Abstain 1

I'll abstain, because this concerns me, but come on people, just 2 more votes!

I fully trust you, Lepidus. No one can bring us a heroic victory in our current situation.

If we had a dictator that wouldn't even guarantee us an average victory...and what if the dictator marched on Rome? We would have no soldiers to stop him.

I'd also like to say that I'd be willing to donate money to the treasury if things turn for the worse...I have some Equestrian friends...

Alright thats close enough for me. Report forthcoming.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Messenger of Consul Lucius Aurelius Lepidus, still covered in the grime of battle and days of travel, strides confidently into the senate.

"I bring word from the Consul, of his first great battle against the Greek dogs"

"Speak, Messenger, we receive you here as a brother" says Consul Aquilinus (sorry for hijacking your character)

The Messenger stands at attention, removes the scroll, unrolls it, and begins to speak.

"These being the words of Consul Lucius Aurelius Lepidus."

"Patri Conscripti, I have little time to write as my work is far from done, but I must tell you of the great battle I have fought with the acting Regent of Epirus, Perikles."

" We began the battle on the high ground, the slope of a very large hill that we had retreated to after we retreated from Croton. The Epriotes marched towards the foot of the hill, and arrayed their mighty force."

"Perikles, that arrogant dog, ordered his entire bodyguard to turn his back on our mighty legion, and his whole army began to chant some Grecian warcry, trying either to scare us into retreat or provoke us into a charge. I felt it would be rude, however, to disrupt this battle, so instead I ordered the Funditores to answer with a volley or two."

"The Funditores rocks and shot didn't kill many Greeks, but the psychological effect was huge. They stopped their chant, and they took cover under their shields. Perikles was so incensed that he sounded a horn and ordered the charge, forcing his men to run full speed up the hill."

"On his flanks, the king had placed his many missile troops. These men caused havoc in our lines, but as you will see, they brought about one of the most decisive parts of this battle.

"And then the pikemen, charging through the relentless hail of pila from the Velites and the Hastati, reached the noble Romans. The Hastati fought well, holding the exhausted Greeks in their place. At the same time, I ordered the Principes to flank the Phalanxes. They had broken their previously solid line, and now fought our Romans in three solid clusters, so this was easily accomplished."

"while the Romans held the phalanxes in the center, it was the Italians that took the initiative on the left flank. seeing their enemy approaching and so enraged at these Greek slaves, they threw their pila and charged the phalanxes without orders or mercy. I would have called them back, but they fought hard and well, so well that the entire Greek right flank was held in place, immovable."

"It was at this time I noticed the peltasts on our right flank were seriously endangering our lines. However, without any equites in my force, I was forced to send the Triarii after them. The Triarii charged down the slope, stabbing and bashing any peltast in their way. They cut straight through them, and for a moment I thought that these few men could win their fight on their own."

"It was not to be. The coward Perikles took this opportunity to strike at an isolated group of Romans, instead of hitting our line, or seeking out me himself. I would not allow this, however."

"I led my bodyguard down the slope at towards the mini-battle at the bottom, urging them on with a blast from my horn. We caught Perikles completely by surprise. What followed was a short but vicious melee. My horsemen fought like men possessed, I myself killing many Greeks. There was no way Perikles could have survived. My only regret was that it was not I who sank my cold blade into his gut."

"Next came a rapid degeneration of Perikles' entire missile corps. His light infantry and peltasts, grieving at the loss of their beloved general and surrendering to some primal instinct, dropped their weapons and fled to the hills. It was these men, the slaves and peasants, driven off of their lands and into arms by the cruel Greek king, that I let escape. His pikemen, men who volunteered to kill Romans, that would be given no mercy."

"The pikes held out a while longer, but they too folded. They were pursued for a while, but eventually I called an end to the slaughter, so as to not loose any men to the countryside. I realized they would all be needed for the coming wars."

"And so, with that, we have victory in our first great battle."

"Our legion is battered, but it is strong. Morale is high, and reinforcements from Tarentum have strengthened us further. We can face down the Garrison of Croton, which is as strong as ever."

"A worrying fact, senators, is the arrival of the Carthaginian army. I cannot be sure of their intentions; they landed north of Croton when they could have easily attacked Tarentum, but without a doubt they present a massive, un-ignorable threat."

Senators, do not get overcome in your celebrations, we still have work to do. We have won a battle but not the war. We have one, possibly two great foes to face, and they are still a great danger.

    Mars and Minerva guide us,

    L. Aurelius Lepidus

Well done Consul! You truly are a great general!

But the task at hands is far from being over. Is it possible to send an emmisary to the Carthginians? I think we should try to get peace from them, as well as trade rights. This might give us time to take Croton (and help with the finances) before the beast returns...
