Consul,if you have the time please inform us of our troops condition;I can tell from memory that the garrisons are under strengthened battalions. But can you give us a clear report of the battle worthy battalions and of the half or lower strength men?

This is the war room, so let us discuss strategies for dealing with the Epirus threat.

Does the Republic have a Navy? Should we consider funding a Navy? I know our finances are weak, but temples can be looted can they not?

What would happen if we struck at the heart of Epirus? Would that bring new lands or new wars?

I do not believe that making a rush attack in Epirus heartland will bring us benefit; In the contrary the act will deny us a valuable legion in Italy. As for navy,we do have one but its a symbolic amount;in no way can we risk to lose a legion at sea...

To ferry one legion from Tarentum to Epirotes held land would take less then one day, ensuring no losses at sea. Would a raid not weaken the Epirotes substantially though?

Surely enough to put an end to their raids in Roman held territory!

Don't forget that still there are some Epirotes in southern Italy...When Consul Lepidus deals with them,it could be a good proposal to raise money and punish the enemy by raiding their capital...

You hit the nail on the head so to speak, speaking from experience former Consul, what were your tactics on defeating the pike formations of Pyrrhus?

There is no foreseeable future in which we will be able to raid Epuris within 10-15 years, perhaps a lot longer. We are over 100,000 denarii in debt and losing money at a rate of about 4k a turn.

We have a ship, and a Legion. This is merely one stratagem that could be used to stop further Epirote invasions.

Its not a strategy, its a dream. We have a ship and Epirus has a navy. They would sink the ship the moment it sailed into the Ionian. Even if we got our boys to Greece, the fleet would without a doubt be lost, forcing them to march home through Illyria and Cisalpine Gaul. And lets not forget what would happen if they failed. With no viable escape route, they would be utterly decimated. I'm sorry, but there is absolutely NO way I would support this.

Here's my finalized plan for the northern front.

The Legion in Rome heads north and breaks the siege on the fort. They then hold the fort against further attacks until the war in the south is over.

The white arrow shows a possible route back to Rome in case the enemy were to bypass the fort.

In the south, the first legion would smash the small army and head south to besiege Croton. The second legion would remain in Tarentum, ready to fight any reinforcements that land in their region.

    What do you think?

And yes the X's = battles.

Please do not insult me, a suicide plan is not something that would be viable if we had such a navy.

I am looking for suggestions on how to deal with the Epirote menace, and so far I am the only one looking to do so.

Lepidus, I believe the plan to be good enough, good luck with it!

    Senators,
Let us stick to the matter at hand! The epirotes CAN be defeated fast, its feasible;Only use the skirmishers against the heavier infantry to weaken them until you engage them with the centuries and you will be fine,Consul. As for the plan to invade Epirus,it would be profitable only when the war on South Italy is over, not before.
Finally Consul,i see great reason in your plan;proceed with it and may Fortuna guide you!

If you look, the majority of Epirot nobility is here in Italy. If we strike now, we can end their bloodline, and I'm sure that the greeks or Macedonians are crushing Epirus itself as we speak. I think that the navy is of little use and should be scuttled in Ostia. It is a un-neccesary drain for our coffers, especially as it is such a pathetic fleet.

We should use the navy to see how strong the Epriot navy is, ie. force them to battle, maybe we might be lucky and their navy is destroyed or which is the most probable as our navy is less battle hardened it would produce a whole in the Epriot navy and maybe kill a few of the men on board their ships.

We should NOT face the epirotes in battle! If we ever plan to invade the Epirot heartlands we shall nead our ships. My plan is (if we attack) to ferry the legion/legions over to greece and then hide withinn a port before one turn is over. Then raid their lands untill we march/sail back to Italy.

So in my Oppinion attacking is a good idea, but We must make sure that we have a safe travel home to! still we shall kill all epirotes in Italy before taking this move. But my answer is an Yea!

The Macedonians are allied with the Epriotes, so they are most certainly not attacking each other.

Also, senator Secundus, I will not support sending our brave legions into that much danger while I am consul. No, we will concentrate on defending Italia and conserving our precious forces.
