Well we can't all be Ryoken but I too have decided to enter this contest. This is the information and link thread so feel free to respond. I'll be updating this post as I finish a chapter or respond to comments. I'm not sure how long the AAR will be, perhaps 3-4 chapters but for now the opening chapter is up. It is a powerpoint presentation. I actually don't have word, I use Open Office. However, it is a standard power point, and you can see it in Microsoft's Power Point Viewer 2003 (a free download). Part of the reason I chose powerpoint was because it was the most forgiving way to format something, at least I think so. Please note that it is optimized for square screens, not widescreen monitors.
You'll note though, if you followed the Turks 2, that I already have kingdoms. I'm doing this because I like telling stories and enjoy competition and because I like the game. If by some chance I were to win, I'll either give it to the second place winner or donate it to Child's Play or something.
EDIT: As usual, I have to reload the file to fix a few typos. I need a proof-reader, blech.
EDIT2: Corrected version is now up.
EDIT3: All done! Thanks go out to my girlfriend for proofreading the last two parts.
Reconqusita: An Iberian Romance
A pair of royal outcasts find their purpose as the fires of piety engulf the peninsula!
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4
Part 5
Slight Edit: Did a little grammatical fixing, replaced the sword picture in Part 4, and added a new picture in Part 5 that I just found. I knew it was there somewhere but I hadn't been able to find it. Files have now been updated to reflect that.
Rodrigo's General's Unit with the Umayyad Banner.
Editor's Notes Part 1:
A word about the title: I'm using the word "romance" in a way closer to the medieval idea of romance than the Victorian era and in particular I looked to Amadis de Gaula, of the very early 16th or very late 15th centuries. As it stars an Iberian I felt it was a good place to get some inspiration.
On History: To begin with, I was unable to find any evidence that Rodrigo, the Spanish faction heir, existed. Urraca and Teresa the princesses at the start of the game certainly did and I've picked events from Urraca's life to mix with what happened in game and what you can infer to create the AAR Urraca. The "brother" Rodrigo talks about is Sancho, the son of Alfonso VI Valiente. The battle described in the AAR (the pictures are grayed because it's a flashback!) is the Battle of Ucles where in real history, Sancho was killed in battle. Rodrigo's very existence changes that history.
Galiana is my own creation. She was inspired by the tale of Zaida and her relationship with Alfonso VI (hence the rumors about Urraca). Her existence also provides part of the "Romance" of the title.
I've taken several liberties with both the way the game is balanced in 1080 and with actually history in terms of telling a good story, that is, my story is not necessarily dependent on what happens in game but is illustrated by and based on M2. For those impatient, the battle starts on slide 6. It's about 2.7MB so it's hefty but manageable.
Editor's Notes Part 2:
The second part was harder to write. I experienced an extreme form of writers block that lasted a long time and had to toss two attempts one of them quite far along. When it finally broke I wrote something like 7 slides in 30 minutes. Luckily I have an idea about how this is going to turn out now. The second part is 2.8 MB so a little bigger but still smaller than a song.
Content wise I suppose the important thing to note is Rodrigo isn't married so no complications there, and that while the Hashshashin really did gain fame around the time of the First Crusade, they were around before then. In effect these are a branch of the Hashshashin that are less focused on assassination than combat--as they are portrayed in game.
From now I will be adding editor's notes to the files themselves.
