Can anyone recommend viewing that pertains to Britain and Europe/Russia through the 1700's? I already own the Hornblower series and a copy of a German movie on Frederick the Great, looking for general history and for some entertainment. Things like the Patriot would not count.

The German video below is authentic (not propaganda as for example "Kampfgeschwader Lutzow") and is showing a German ambush against a unit of Polish cyclists in 1939 - it is very rare and unique:

A German soldier can be seen - are you able to recognize his unit?

And here is propaganda - fragments of mentioned "Kampfgeschwader Lutzow" (film made in 1940) :

In 1:34 Polish propaganda poster "Gwałt zadawany siłą musi być siłą odparty. Swego nie damy napastnika zwyciężymy. W wypadku wojny każdy mężczyzna bez względu na wiek i każda kobieta będą żołnierzami." can be seen:

The video below (very unique and rare) is showing Polish withdrawal to Romania after the Soviet invasion of Poland:

We can see vehicular units of 151. or 152. Fighter Squadron, as well as some other units (some soldiers from an armoured unit can be seen, for example), crossing the Polish-Romanian border - the date is 18th of September 1939:

Many civilian refugees (most probably) can also be seen:

We can see equipment such as: PF 621 trucks (first two with petrol trailers), later radio station cars PF 618 with N1S radio station and two PF 508/18 with N2S radio stations, then some more cars and a Bofors 40mm Anti-Aircraft gun, later we can see some army (including some soldiers from armoured unit / units) and police units, as well as some civilians (maybe refugees ?):

Not really a documentary, more like a tribute to the Swedish Russo war of 1808-1809 aka "The Finnish war"

Whilst this may not necessarily be purely focused on history, I think this is rather representative of some sentiments in the 1960's. on the MLF plan proposed by the U.S to produce submarines and warships armed with nuclear warheads to be manned by N.A.T.O

British video about the Polish Armed Forces - "Polish Army Manoeuvres" - 1939:

    PS:

Polish army before the common war mobilization, on 01.06.1939 had got 440 - 400 thousand (on 01.01.1939 it was much weaker - only 250 - 260 thousand) and after a dozen or so days of mobilization it was to be increased to up to 1,300,000 (this number was never achieved).

The statement about half of Polish budget spent on army is correct (as a matter of fact Polish army was among the first 5 - 10 strongest world's armies on 01.09.1939; while German and Soviet armies were the two strongest ones, French army was third).

Ancient Rome:The Rise and Fall of an Empire
    Episode III:Rebellion

In AD 66, the biggest rebellion ever against the power of Rome broke out in the remote province of Judea. The fear was, it could destabilize the whole empire. To stamp this out, Rome turned to the outcast general, Vespasian, and his son, Titus. This is the story of how they rose from disgrace and obscurity to crush the rebellion. Their reward would be that both would become emperor. Their legacy survives into this day, for they would build, one of the greatest symbols of the power of Rome.

The Six Wives of Henry the VIII

Queen, lover, mother, outcast, victim and survivor – this is how controversial historian Dr David Starkey assigns the roles of the six wives of Britain’s most famous monarch Henry VIII in the sexual intrigue and cut-throat power politics of his long reign from 1509 to 1547.

From the time Catherine of Aragon, a Spanish princess and widow of his deceased brother, refused Henry's demand for divorce, leading to a break with the papal authority of Rome, the battle for religious control and the king's heart raged.

Dramatic reconstructions and passionate narration tell the stories of how the women were players, not just pawns, in the game. Their decisions were as influential in changing the course of English history as the king’s, but the stakes were high. Not all were able to dodge the executioner’s axe.

Anne Boleyn, who actively encouraged the king’s break with Rome with her keenness for the new Bible, was beheaded, as was Catherine Howard. Jane Seymour died after giving birth to the son Henry craved. Yet all left their mark.

    Blood of the Vikings

Blood of the Vikings was a 2001 BBC Television documentary series that traced the legacy of the Vikings in the British Isles through a genetics survey
Geneticist Professor David Goldstein, from University College London, lead the 15-month study that compared mouth swabs from 2,500 male volunteers from 25 different locations across the country with DNA samples from Scandinavian locals to find out how much Viking heritage remains in the UK.
The research confirmed that the Vikings did not just raid and retreat to Scandinavia, but settled in Britain for years. They left their genetic pattern in some parts of the UK population. Concentrations of Norwegian genetic heritage were found in part of Cumbria in northwest England, the area around Penrith, the Shetland and Orkney Islands and the far north of the Scottish mainland.[4]

In addition the research revealed surprising new information about Celtic and Anglo-Saxon heritage on the British mainland. Men who were tested in mainland Scotland had a percentage of Celtic genetic heritage similar to the population of southern England. This showed 1) that Celtic heritage persisted among men in southern England after Anglo-Saxon settlement; and 2) that the Scots were not predominantly Celtic.[4]
