Default "Ancient Artificial Eye Unearthed in Iran"

"The 4,800-year-old artificial eye was recently found (2006) by archaeologists working at the Burnt City historical site in southeastern Iran, according to a report published by the Circle of Ancient Iranian Studies, a London-based research and educational program. Judging from the contents of the grave, the archaeologists believe its owner was a young woman of elite status."

havent seen any other archaeology based sources on this, but perhaps this eye was inserted after death?

Interesting, but I agree with Sh3rpa. How do they know it was a prosthetic eye, as oppose to a burial ornament?

It would still be an artificial eye, though, wouldn't it?

Unless the other socket has this artificial eye, then it's probable that it was inserted while living.

Just one more weird woman archetype for 300's Xerxes and his erotic harem.

I've heard of artificial noses that some wealthy men wore after having them smashed during a battle. Like a bronze mold that fits over top somehow to hide your disfigurement.
Artificial eyes are just more tricky... its easier to get irritated and infected.

I have already read about this. If was indeed added while the person was still alive, I wouldn't expect it to happen anywhere other than Iran at that time.

Well, it's a black eye anyway. Look at the good condition of the teeth!! Maybe the Iranians had some sort of toothpaste like Iranagleem or Persian Pearls or something.

But who did populated Iran in 4800?
Semitic or Elamitic culture -for Indo-European invasion had not yet took place
It was a very hot question indeed(in 60-80s when West got very intersted in Eastern cultures)-what tech exactly Indo-Iranians borrowed from nations they had conquered
And what are relations between Semitic and Elamitic cultures and languages?

Old Salnarville beheld hys son lie ded, 235

    But Harold at one blowe made tweine his head;
He dy'd before the poignant arrowe flew.
So was the hope of all the issue gone,
And in one battle fell the sire and son

I am pretty sure not Elamites or Semites, they arrived a few thousand year later (proto Elamites were 3500 I believe).

More importantly, who shot the woman in the eye with a 4800 year old musket?

It never ceases to amaze me just how advanced some of these ancient civilizations were.

Me too, right now I'm on an ancient Sumerians kick. How did they know it was a heliocentric solar system 6000 years ago? Real kick in the pants to Aristotle and that crowd .

@Thutmose: there were several Greeks who also were conviced that the universe was heliocentric. But yeah the Sumerians were 1st I believe.
