ive read many books about hoplite warfare,so im wondering if in this game light troops like peltast and archers are only recruit as mercenaries since the city's never bothered on training them.
(you know archers from crete, slingers from Rhodes, spear throwers from nothern greece etc).

Maybey not the Spartans cuz they used there helot slaves

But the AI seems to like training light troops ... how has the AI done in testing in this regard in HCS?

Right, usually the lower classes were recruited as "psiloi" (peltasts, archers, spear throwers, slingers etc) or rowers in the triremes (in the case of Athens).

As Racer mention not all light troops were mercs. Athenians employed thousands of athenians, not mercs, as archers and slingers aboard there triremes. Same for Corinth and Argos on their ships. Often the poorest of the citizen base would begin as "light troops" or as slingers or spear throwers. To be an archer took tremendous skill and training to be able to launch the arrow effectively. However usefull they were though the typical archer proffession wasn't a sought after career by many of the greeks on the pellonponeses and in Attica.
