Twilight of the Arsacids: An Armenian AAR

House rules are my usual ones for when the AAR is not Medieval.

See here for an example of one of my previous non-Medieval AAR’s (never mind the red text, it seems to have appeared from out of nowhere in my old AAR's):

    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...se+of+Tigranes

    Introduction

Armenia is in a state of peril. With the recent civil war between the Catholicosate and the Monarchy, both the Catholicos Yusik and the Arkah Tiran were killed, the former by Tiran, and the latter by a conniving Sassania. From the rubble of what was once a glorious kingdom arose the young son of Tiran, Arshak II. And then he died. Now, after decades of struggle, a new king, Artashes III, is prepared to propel Armenia to its former glory. Will he succeed? Or will Drtad's poor battle skills cause Armenia to fall to the might of Iranshahr?

Nice. Looking forward to it. Your AAR (Tigranes) was a lot of fun to read. Perhaps a bit too serious, though? Not enough goat's milk . . .

    We'll see.

Btw, everybody, I have decided against using the Imperium Julianorum mod since it is way too unstable a campaign. I am going to use the regular IBFD campaign. The intro will be changed accordingly.

Twilight of the Arsacids Chapter One: Romans Are Weird, Persians Are Silent... (So Far)
I am the Armenian historian Abdissares Paytakarantsi. I was the chronicler of Argishti Arsacid. I shall write down my interesting story for posterity. I hope it will be enlightening and educational… and freaking entertaining. Enjoy.

Armenia Before the War with Imperium Romanum Occidentalis

    Vagharshapat…

Artashes: Attendant!!! Bring me my wine and my harem here. NOW!!!

Attendant: Here? Sire? The throne room?

Artashes: Yeah are you blind you short, scrawny idiot! I want them here!

Attendant: But sire, what about the peasant rebellions near Artaxata and the loyalist revolt of Colchis to our side and the war with Eastern Rome?

Artashes: Send my 16 year old obviously too immature and incompetent son Argishti to deal with them.

    Attendant: But sire…

Artashes: NOW!!! I don’t see any women or alcoholic beverages yet, scrawny attendant! Ooh, hello ladies…

    Artaxata…

    Argishti: I can’t believe this Abdissares, I just can’t!

Abdissares: What can’t you believe, my prince.

Argishti: As my father sits in his throne room drinking wine and… umm… having a good time with women, he is leaving me to essentially run the Kingdom of Armenia! I am only 16!

Abdissares: Well, you should complain to the nakharars, not me. I am only a chronicler. Remember it was the nakharars who made your father king.

    Argishti: I know, I know…

Attendant: Prince Argishti, we have word from Colchis. A Roman army has arrived and is terrorizing the countryside. The local troops are composed of Rhamik peasants and are powerless to halt their advance.

Argishti: I shall valiantly lead the army to glory and victory!

    Vagharshapat…

Attendant: Milord, we have news from the front.

Artashes: Make this quick, you know that I am hosting Miss Armenia in a few minutes, and afterwards I am busy with the afterparty… Do you catch my drift, scrawny attendant?

Attendant: Yes, sire… Anyway your son Argishti is leading the Armenian Royal Army against the Romans today.

Argishti: Good, one more thing to not worry about.

    Colchis

Argishti: Ahh, what a nice sea breeze…

Abdissares: My prince, you know I can’t chronicle this, you must take action!

Argishti: Uhh… Right! All men, take you positions and form up in your ranks! Since I have studied tactics since I was twelve, I know a few tricks. Since Rome is lacking in archers, especially horse archers with the notable exception of the Parthian Equites, I have decided that we shall only deploy our horse archers against them to soften them up, and then we shall move in with the heavy cavalry to finish the job, horse archers can’t kill them all alone, right? So… yeah.

Argishti: Alright my long ranged horsemen! Move out!

On the surface, it seemed as if Argishti’s plan was too simple to possibly win a battle against the empire building Romans. However, I was proven wrong soon enough…
The Roman Legio Armeniaca First Cohort stood ready against us.
As Argishti’s horse archers began to fight an archer battle with the Roman Parthian auxiliaries, the Romans made a strange move. They charged with one division of light infantry.
It gets better, I shall go back to what was really said now…
Argishti: WTF???? WTF are those Romans doing?!

    Abdissares: Wow…

Argishti: They seem to have turned their backs to my horse archers, and now are marching very slowly and carefully back to their main army… Horse Archers, redirect your fire to… you know who I mean.

And that is the way the battle went. The Romans marched up with one division of infantry and then marched slowly away with their backs turned. Pictures speak a thousand words.
Even their elites were weak to simple arrow fire with their backs turned.
Soon enough, the entire Roman army was dead or routing. Hopefully the Persians will be smarter. See you next time for Chapter Two.

Do you guys like this format better? Or should I go with the same format as my previous AAR’s (like the Tigranes one)?

Twilight of the Arsacids Chapter Two: The Empire Strikes Back… A Lot

Hello, I am the Armenian historian Vartan Armavirtsi. Unfortunately, my mentor, Abdissares Paytakarantsi, was killed by an assassin. I shall continue the histories of the Twilight of the Arsacids.

Armenia before the events of this chapter

    Somewhere near Van, Bznunik province…

    Argishti: Aaaaah!!!!

Abdissares: What is it Argishti!? It is 2:00AM Caucasian Time!

Argishti: I had a dream. I died in that dream, killed by an assassin’s blade, and so were you.

Abdissares: And that’s why you woke up?

Argishti: No, I saw… In my absence, my father, Artashes… He took command of the army and led them against the Romans.

    Abdissares: Aaaaaaah!!!

Argishti: May God have mercy on our souls…

    Pityus…

Captain Fragiledus: Everything seems to be going well in Armenia these days. Argishti is successfully intercepting Roman incursions in Bznunik, and our recent alliance to the beleaguered Lakhmids against Rome is proving fruitful. Life is good, isn’t it Varaz-Tirots?

Varaz Tirots: Yeah, I guess so. Hey, did you open up your mail yet?

Fragiledus: No, let’s see… Bills, bills, bills… Jesus Christ my wireless company is ripping me off! That freaking ArmeniAT&T!!!

Varaz-Tirots: Hey, look, it’s a note from one of our scouts on the front lines… Apparently there is a large Roman army containing forces of the nearly invincible Roman legions.

Fragiledus: Crap. And we don’t have the force to repel them… I fear that we shall only take as many of them with us as we can.

    Varaz-Tirots: Take them where?

Fragiledus: May God have mercy on our souls…

    Varaz-Tirots: …

Fragiledus: I know that the situation seems hopeless. The Romans have one thousand more men, and our army is mostly made up of Rhamik peasantry… So yeah, it is hopeless, but we must kill as many of them as we can to ease the future pressure they will put on Vagharshapat. Everybody, take your last Holy Communion, and beg forgiveness for your sins. Our final hour is nigh.

    Varaz-Tirots: Wahh!!!

    Fragiledus: Pull yourself together man!

Varaz-Tirots: Okay… Aaaah! The Romans approach with their fancy shmancy siege weapons!

    Fragiledus: Indeed.

Anyway, the Captain Fragiledua had arrayed the majority of the defenders on the walls to hold the towers as long as possible before the inevitable collapse of the defense. There were a few Rhamik divisions on the ground in an effort to delay enemy advances through the city streets. Soon enough, the enemy was on the walls and was engaged with the Armenian defenders along two main fronts: the Central Front, and the Right Front. The Romans did not send troops to the left side of the gateway for unknown reasons (stupid AI). Soon, they were at the walls with towers and ladders and at the gates with a ram.

Fragiledus: Azat Infantry! Rhamiks! Engage the enemy! God will now be the judge of our fates!

For a while, the situation deteriorated as the superior Roman troops slowly gained ground on the walls and more fresh troops were climbing the ladders.

For about 30 minutes the battle raged on. Fragiledus was killed fighting on the walls, and Varaz-Tirots died of dehydration after wetting himself for the 16th time. Left leaderless and broken, the few remaining Azats rallied the Rhamik peasants and the battle continued… except at the gates where there was a staring contest.

Surprisingly, the Armenians completely overwhelmed Armeniaca and its supporting forces on the Right Front, thus allowing the Azats and Rhamiks there to reinforce the heavily taxed Armenian divisions at the Central front near the gateway towers.

However, the luck of the Armenians would not last. The AI, I mean the Romans decided to stop being stupid, and decided to send all of their cavalry and storm through the now unguarded gates (all the Rhamiks were on the walls overwhelming the Romans). They then opened up the Left front, and had soon destroyed the two divisions of Rhamiks there. After that, the Center Front was flanked. The tables had turned, for the final time, in Rome’s favor.

On the ground, the Romans flooded into the city in a never ending straight line and were met by one division of Aspet Cavalry which was all the Armenians had in terms of troops not fighting on the walls.

Very surprisingly, the outnumbered Armenian Cavalrymen quickly scattered the Romans and killed off the majority of their Dalmatii Equites and Clibanarii before finally they too were overwhelmed by sheer numbers.

Oblivious to the happenings on the ground, the Armenians on the walls continued to fight and send as many Romans to Hell as possible before they themselves met God in Heaven.

The Armenians lost the battle, but that valiance displayed at the Storming of Pityus by an army of mostly peasants which took over 1500 experienced Roman legionaries with them was of Avarayric proportions.

But alas, this was not the only tragedy to befall Armenia in this chapter…
    A church in Bznunik…

Argishti: Hayr mer, vor hergeenus yes…

    Roman Assassin: Hehehe.

Argishti: Soorp yeghitsi anoonkoh, Amen. Aaaaaaaaaaah!

Abdisares: No! Not me! I can make cheese! I am a Roman sympathizer! I have three children! I, ugh….

Argishti: No!! I won’t let you kill me! Beware! I have an incense burner and a wooden cross! I’m warning you! Yow!!! *^%& you and your family!

In retaliation for this cowardly assassination, Armenia assassinated some Roman guy.

Here is the state of Armenia after the Storming of Pityus and the assassination of Argishti.

Inspiration for the assassination scene was provided by the assassination of this guy:

Inspiration for the word “Avarayric” was inspired by this battle:

I hope you all like this chapter!

Twilight of the Arsacids Chapter Three: Artashes Gets Off His Butt to Fight Persians
At the beginning of this chapter Armenia was reeling from its recent defeat at Pityus. In its moment of weakness, Eranshahr decides to enter the scene…
    Vagharshapat…

Attendant: Milord, the Persians are besieging Phraaspa.

Artashes: Now is not a good time, I am asking Miss Artaxata a question for the Miss Armenia pageant! So anyway, Miss Artaxata, why do you think 20% of Armenians can’t locate Armenia on a map?

Miss Artaxata: I personally believe that the such as Armenians can’t do so because they don’t have maps, and we have to really teach those Bactrians and Huns so that we can have a strong future such as filled with powerful and Berber Constantine Romans.

    Artashes: Uhh…

    Attendant: Sire?

Artashes: I believe it is time for me to start acting like a king to reform the education system!

Attendant: Uh, milord, shouldn’t you deal with the Persians besieging Phraaspa and the Romans besieging Van, first?

Artashes: Quite right, I shall do so.

After a few skirmishes it seemed as if the Persians would be overcome quickly by Armenia’s powerful Nakharars who were tearing apart their Savaran.
However, these skirmishes were only distractions to the Persian master plan, they besieged Vagharshapat with a full stack of elite Persian units and onagers. Artashes could either relieve Van from Rome and risk losing Vagharshapat or relieve Vagharshapat and lose Van for sure. Artashes took the safe route and relieved Vagharshapat…
Artashes: Men, today we face the cream of the Sassanid Army. What is Armenia compared to Persia? Armenia is infinitely better, not because we are small, or have more attractive women here, but because we are Christian. Now let us show those fire worshiping infidels the wrath of God’s chosen people! ARMENIA!!!!

    Attendant: Thrilling speech, milord.

Artashes: To be honest I was working on that for a few weeks.

    Attendant: Well that explains it.

The reinforcements from Vagharshapat’s garrison were negligible, so this was going to be a tough battle. The best elite Persian units were present, led by a unit of Peroozetae, the best cavalry of Persia. Armenian Horse Archers began the initial bombardment of Sassania’s forward positions to make it easier for the Armenian Cavalry to get at the center of the Persian forces, the Savaran and the Peroozetae.
Unbeknownst to Artashes when he started the attack, the Persians had two units of War Elephants, which would no doubt make the battle even tougher to win.
The Armenians charged with every unit they had. The reinforcements hit the Sassanian Infantry and the Daylamites encamped on the lower ground with Armenia’s superior infantry.
The battle raged on as Sassania committed its elephants to the fray.
The Persian cataphracts continued to meet their doom against the continued pressure of the Nakharars.
On the lower ground, the Armenian reinforcement Kentronakan Gund, the best Armenian infantry, continued their plight to annihilate their Sassanian counterparts, successfully.
The battle continued for a while, until the elephants were finally put to rest and the Persian general was killed. The Armenian Nakharars proved themselves superior to the Persian Savaran, but with a high price (those damn elephants kill everything!).
Perhaps Armenia stands a chance at survival? Come read the next chapter to find out.
