Thread: Smoke and Fog of War

Default Smoke and Fog of War

Just seen a thread over on the .com site that raises a very good point.

Smoke on the battlefield from all the muskets and canon should be rep[resented in the game. But further than that it should impact the game. It should introduce a real fog of war on the battlefield so that you can't see the opposing armies anymore, a bit like when they move through forests in M2TW.

What do you reckon? CA implement it?

yes i think they should be heavy fog and smoke which builds up during the battle which will affect line of sight etc... this would influence alot more hand to hand fighting as well

Yeah that's a very good point it should also be largely affected by wind and weather conditions.

I think CA already said that this is in the game. This would be a good feature.

I have been paying a lot of attention so far to the amount of smoke in ETW, and so far it looks like its done relatively well (in terms of quality) but is lacking in quantity.

Essentially it looks like they are showing screens and videos with little amount of smoke to reflect not only the superb graphics but also make the game more easy/playable. If it were anywhere near realistic, after the first few shots, there would be a huge cloud of smoke lingering over the battlefield.

Now my best hope is that there is an option in the game that turns on and off realistic smoke (meaning the vast amounts that existed in real 18th Century battlefields). However, I am afraid I will have to wait for some form of mod for that option. But I will remain hopeful.

As for effecting LOS for both the player and the troops, I think that would be a great addition, but I am not entirely convinced it will be added to the new game.

How far back are you reading posts?!

Still, smoke would be a great idea. Not just visually but as mentioned it could have several efects in game as well:

    • Smoke could hide cavalry until it was too late to form square.
    • You could cahrge out of it for a morale bonus.
    • It could make you lose formation, alignment or even faciong if you move about in it for too long.
    • It could be used to hide the movement of formations.
    • You could end up firning at nothing but a bank of cloud.
    • etc...

Not sure how you'd get around the unrestricted camera thing though.
