Fitz Salnarville, Duke William's favourite knyghte,
To noble Edelwarde his life dyd yielde;
Withe hys tylte launce hee stroke with thilk a myghte,
The Norman's bowels steemde upon the feeld.
Old Salnarville beheld hys son lie ded, 235
Against Erie Edelward his bowe-strynge drewe;
But Harold at one blowe made tweine his head;
He dy'd before the poignant arrowe flew.
So was the hope of all the issue gone,
And in one battle fell the sire and son.
They're very different types of games; I don't see much overlap, really.

I think i will prefer Empires Total War when its been de-vanilla'd by modders. wash out the colours of units, historical names, places etc.

TW games has always been better looking, with massive battles that player itself can command, but loosing in strategic and diplomatic aspects in the game.
Most likely this won't change when Empires TW is released, it will be much simpler, better looking and in general made for the masses where EU3 takes more realistic and historical approach but due to its old looking graphics and harder game play will have smaller, but even more loyal audience.
Most of the time period covered by Empires is already covered by EUIII without NA, if I'm not mistaken...

Conclusion: both can co-exist and have different aims.

How long until Empires is out? When is EUIII out? Get the drift?

Damn i played EU3 like 10 times longer and M2tw is 10 times bigger (well in bites only ofcourse :p)

With Empire I dont even trust CA to make a good core game to mod from. Especially since they add pointless things like ship combat, which will of course take programming and QA time from regular combat and the campaign map, which will make the two elements taken from the previous games even worse.

EU3 Campaign Map and AI + Empires battles = win
Yeah the idea of what "total war" is in TW is a lot different than in EUIII (more realistic in EUIII, IMO)

The crownless again shall be king."
I see the reason they did make all of those rebel territories. Imagine how long a single turn would take if EVERY faction on the map historically is in game. In EU3 it isn't as bad because the graphics are simplified, but in TW it could take forever. TW games have their place, as do EU games. They are both separate genres, really.
According to the Theory of War, which teaches that the best way to avoid the inconvenience of war is to pursue it away from your own country, it is more sensible for us to fight our notorious enemy in his own realm, with the joint power of our allies, than it is to wait for him at our own doors.
- King Edward III, 1339
The rebels are not "rebels" they are independant minor nations. I don't mind them.
