Default So if i started working on a speech mod...

So if i started working on a speech mod for stainless steel. ( yes pre-battle speeches.)
How many people are there with microphones, and speech ideas that would be willing to help out?

it occurs to me that many factions lack real speeches, and those that do have long speeches aren't that great, so who wants that fixed?

I'd like to help out with, if not voice acting, the speeches.

I like the main factions with the long speeches well enough. The non England/Spain/France/HRE/Venice countries definitely need work.

What would this mean in terms of mod size though? Aren't sound files usually ginormous?

It was so funny perspective to chase him with torches that I couldn't resist voting on it. I'd really love new speeches (if quality, of course) anyways. ;-)

hey even i voted for the chase with torches.

O.o so far I've been trying to unpack files and try and figure out what files are the voice for speeches and all that.

so far its been interrupted 3 times.. by a power cut.. then by my surge protector going off, and a third time when my pc just plain out restarted.

to boot stainless steel no longer works.

i might shuffle this down a little bit in my to do pile.

although its pretty clear that peeps want better speeches, so i promise to get round to it.

    Greetings,

I would love to help out. I have always thought it would be cool to alter, or change out right, the speeches using my voice. I never figured out how to do it, though. How can we do this? How is it possible? I know my way around the computer a bit; not so much in the modding department, but if I had some guidance I am sure that I would be able to fgiure it out. I have a microphone and two audio programs that are free form the net. If anyone would like to try them out, they are called Audacity and Gold Wave. I would really like to try something like this.

    Regards,
    morrisonicus

I'd be happy to help. I don't really know what voice I can do (I'm Russian, but Russians say I have an American lack-of-accent and English speakers say I have a weird accent).

Actually, I think I sound somewhat like the Islamic captains.

Regarding audio, Audacity is better for music and that sort of thing. For speech, I'd recommend Wavepad.

Do you have to purchase Wave Pad?

The full version is a plus, but you can just use the trial, then uninstall and reinstall once it expires.

Shaio, I know how you feel about P2P. I'm a jew :p - the stereotype holds true (for me, at least).

Again, I'd be happy to help with voices.

And some digging around on the official forum found this: http://shoguntotalwar.yuku.com/topic...he-Quotes.html

I was searching throught the forums the other day and I came across a thread. I PM'd the poster and this is what he wrote back to me:

    This was written by dvk901:
Well my tips aren't that great, you'd probably be better of looking for the tutorial for it..I'm pretty sure there is one.

However, I can say that the general's speeches are all mp3s, and they are controlled by this file:

    export_descr_sounds_prebattle.txt

ALL sounds in RTW are comtrolled by text files that say:

    descr_sounds_xxxxxxx.txt

    or

    export_descr_sounds_xxxxxx.txt

    They are stored in 'events.dat'.

I think if you wanted to change them, you would have to name them a different name, and then edit the appropriate text file to point to the changed files.
Otherwise, the game will just pull them out of events.dat.

I don't know anything about MTW2, but I imagine it's much the same.

    Cheers.
It may not be too descriptive, but hey, it's a start. Much to the dismay of my better-half, I will probably spend most our (my) weekend messing around in the files, but I bribe her to stay off of my back. Horrible? Maybe. However, sometimes a man has got to do what a man wants to do, until she cuts me off.
Sorry, I digress. Perhaps today at work I will try to write out some scripts. I think I will be pretty good at the voice acting part of this.

@Zeeky, crap I'm out of date on my stereotypes!
Seriously thou.. broadband is a wise investment, so much cheaper then large shiny software packages.
    >.>

    Ahem.
    @morris
Sadly none of those files seem to exist. ( thought it may be that events.dat didn't extract for some reason.)

Cheers for pointing me in the right direction.

For some reason best known to themselves CA didn't ship the sound text files with the game. You can download the English versions here.

You might also want to refer to the Sounds forum if you require any help.

    well so it seems.

    export_descr_sounds_prebattle.txt

houses the speeches themselves, and triggers, based on the traits file.
What factions use what speeches is determined by descr_sounds_accents.txt ( which is already in mtw2 data folder.)

    controlled via this entry.
    BANK: prebattle_speech
accent English ( well i assume its this entry)
    element VNV_OPENING

supported by the fact that the Scottish speeches have this entry also right before them.
    accent Scottish

so in theory by changing that line in sounds_prebattle i can switch the english speeches to any other faction.

so the accent file and sounds_prebattle appear to be the only thing we need to edit.

@Nerazzuri Cheers man, i cant tell you how much time you've saved me, i would've been messing round with mtw2 files for weeks without that helpful link.

Now I'ma add a rant about boobies to the speeches as a test.

Well okay, I'm looking at extracted speech files, and its about 120 meg, so this speech mod will be fairly big, but on the assumption it isnt necessary to repack the sound files it will still be a manageable file, assuming we use good compression on the mp3s.

That sounds good. I thought the files might be a bit large. Keep us updated, if you will.
