    Is there some way to play the Mongols in the Late Period by editing the game files? (Note: no mods, they never work for me.)

    You probably can, but the best way would be to....install a mod.

    Yes, there is. That is if you're talking about Medieval: Total War (Golden Horde)
    Just write -ian in the command line of the game icon. If succesfull, you can enter debug mode. Go to late period and start with any faction. hold shift and press 6.
    CONCRATS! YOU'RE THE GOLDEN HORDE!

    Note: You can also play as the hungarians, sicilians, aragonese, novgorod (early period) and as the pope by pressing diferent numbers.
    Note 2: If you play as the pope, you can't excomuminicate other factions, but no one can excomunicate you.

    Where is the command line? Just -ian?

    Just click the icon with the right button and select propeties. Write -ian in the command line (Don't earse any text).

    The mongols are in the mongol invasion expansion and aren't playable in the main Shogun campaign (aside from custom battles). most copies available these days are the warlord/gold/whatever edition though, which has it all.
