Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

Yep, Nero666 made one ages ago too of the entire world, also for heights.

Forests cover your entire provinces, though. Have to cut a lot of wood on your maps before you can go anywhere - same with mountains. Scale is a bit off for the game.

    High Resolution Images
1km Western Hemisphere (19.7 MB TIFF)
1km Eastern Hemisphere (25.4 MB TIFF)
    4km Global (18.9 MB TIFF)
    16km Global (470 KB JPEG)

Must have been an old page with automatic redirect.
Try the Wikipedia link, that looks promising.

sadly after I searched through everything I could not find a similar map.
my friend nearby who is a computer specialist says the Nasa link is broken.

    Check this link.
At the bottom is a usuable download. But only the TIFF one has a format that you can conceivably use for mapping in M2TW.
To work with it you need Photoshop and at least 2GB memory. And even then it is like wading through molasses.
This can be converted to heights.

For ground_types you need the two LCC files which are in TIFF format as well. Same problem as above as they are each about 25MB in size.
Start working on the one above and then tell me if you still want the LCC files - I have got them on my hard drive with the color key.

    thanks Gigantus.
My brothers computer has 8GB of RAM and he has photoshop. I will see if I can follow the tutorial there.
I only want to use the the lands of Persia, Asia minor, mesopotamia parts for a mod. I already have a good heights map. I just need the map_ground_types to be made.

oh by the way. If I work with the TTF file and create a map_ground_types, how do I make it totally overlap with my map_heights which I made with 3DEM ?

Extremely tricky as the map from 3Dem will be slightly distorted and a match is very unlikely. You could use it as a reference and work it in.
