Thread: What's up with the HRE?

Default What's up with the HRE?

In my game currently the emperor of the HRE is the king of Portugal.

    But...Portugal isn't a even a MEMBER of the HRE.

Furthermore I AM a member, I have 200 relations with one of the electors, and they're voting for Portugal (with whom their relations are like 65.)

    I don't think I understand this.

It's historical. Alfonso X of Castile was elected Holy Roman Emperor but never even touched the soil of the HRE.
The only prerequisite is, if I recall correctly, that one must be Christian to be elected Holy Roman Emperor. There is some odd chance, that even Ethiopia gets elected as Emperor. It was often posted as a bug on the paradox forums, but in fact it isn't.

edit: Another example would be this guy:

Even an English got elected as Emperor.

Hmm...that's a little odd, crazy Germans.

Ok, so what determines who a country votes for? Because I can never get them to vote for me, even with a low rep, a high prestige and good relations.

As you mentioned, low rep, high prestige and good relations matter. Vassalage matters as well.
Alliances and wars together against someone might also play a role.

HRE wasn't intended as German Empire but later became assisted with them it is quite a number of nationalities which were in it in different eras
Fitz Salnarville, Duke William's favourite knyghte,

Withe hys tylte launce hee stroke with thilk a myghte,
The Norman's bowels steemde upon the feeld.
Old Salnarville beheld hys son lie ded, 235

So was the hope of all the issue gone,
And in one battle fell the sire and son

Evidently it's not. People have reported the ruler of Ethiopia getting elected.

I believe there may have been some protestant emperors in the empires later years anyway.

    Another question concerning the HRE:
When I go to the map showing the provinces included in the HRE, why are some of them a bright green color and some a darker green? are the bright green ones the elector states?
Thank you for reading this assuredly fantastic post.

I've been wondering about that too.

In my beginner's game as Portugal I've had 5 rulers in a row named Holy Roman Emperor. Pretty fitting as I hold the entire Italian peninsular under my rule. Either as vassals or as my own provinces.
