good info thx mate, its pretty helpful
Jesus christ I find this to be insanely hard... any tips ?
Staying alive ?
can be, depends on how you attack. starting out the game is pretty hard, but once you get a decent horse and a weapon with some reach, well you can solo quite large mobs if you just circle them and watch out for archers and pikes. i usually get killed because i leave my troops at the start and charge in the widdle down a mob, then get to ambitious and run into cavalry to stop my horse and get taken down by a mob i cant get out of. if im lucky though, i keep my cavalry nearby, so they can come to the rescue and bust up those mobs.
i would say soloing as a footsoldier is near impossible, soloing as a cavalry is a good way to boost your skills.
you easiest troops to engage early on are brigands, and for quick cash you want to watchout for battles going on you can join. goblins can be easy or hard sometimes.
well, thugs get killed pretty fast by Goblins. Like 4 for every 1 Goblin...
yeah, best is to join forces with another patrol, follow them around, join in their battles, especially if the enemy has prisoners... much faster way of getting decent troops.
alternatively, start with a high charisma leader. a large force of 22 gondor youth can easily take on both brigands and goblins, as the party size is based more on your level than the troops under you command. don't be surprised if you lose 3 ofr every 1 thats gets promoted though. its a bloody way of gaining experienced soldiers.
brigands are certainly your best bet...
also , remeber even if you promote your units to elite they'll die quite easily against Modor's forces , you might win with 1 or 0 casultys against goblins with an experianced army but against a mordor army ,even if you out number it , expect to take atleast 1/2 or 1/3 the enemy force's casutlys, only horse have a lower casulty rate because they run around all the time.
im telling you this to let you know , don't get to attached to your Gondorian Tower Guards , Kings Bodyguards they'll survive only 2-5 battles utmost, you should try and get your main character as buffed out as possible , as soon you do that'll at least help keep your casualty rate lower.

I'm making the assumption you are starting as Gondor here. I'd reccomend starting as a Squire of Gondor for the horse you being with. At minas Tirith castle speak to Malbung, he will serve you for "free" as you are a Gondorian. And at Edoras castle there is a horsmen -Ulfas- who will serve you for just 10 influence points.
Like others said, especially at the start when you have a small number of low-end troops, it's you who makes the battles. The first thing I would do if you are having trouble at the start is to go to the Brigand fort and complete the training course there. That will increase you by one level. Carry on developing your charachter at the Brigand Fort's arena - here you can gain both valuable experiance and money without the risk of an actual battle as well as save time that you would use exploring the map looking for a fight. Stop whenever you feel more confident; you can use the money from the arena for better weapons and armour for both yourself and your N.C.P's and more men. To upgrade your men without severe casualties, pick on easy targets - such as battles that are already being fought.
You can buy crossbows and bolts at the Corsair camp, but -obviously- you have to be playing as the "bad guys". I have yet to find them anywhere else.
If you are one of the good factions the only way I can think you could get one would be by defeating some Corsair armies which have crossbow units in them and hope that one turns up from the loot at the end of the battle. Those crossbow units can be pretty annoying in battle though, so it wont be easy; and you would have to be lucky to get both the crossbow and bolts at the end of the battle.
Concerning the "5° to the left/right of where you're aiming" my only reccomendation is to stick at it - Archer, especially Horse Archer charachters, are difficult to master at the start; but once you get your proficiency and power draw up your aim will become far more accurate and you will be deadly. And try not to always upgrade to a more powerful bow as soon as you are possible, try sticking to a bow you have +2 powerdraw over the miminimum necessary, it does make a difference.
Yeah when it come to being a good guy in TLD you make the battle. Like take my recent battle with my lvl 24 Elf, heres the odds:
200 Moria Forces around 40 are Warg Riders the rest are just normal Orcs and Orc Snagas.
49 Combined Elvish Troops Primarily Scouts and Dunedain Warriors no calvary.
With me leading the battle(which is to say running around killing randomly) the battle ended with:
0 Moria forces
23 Combat able Elfs not counting rescued prisoners, so see you make the battles.
wow, you guys take alot of casualties, usually a bad battle for me is when i lose 5 or 6 men out of 45, and this is when im taking on one of the host armies. i leave all me troops at the start and go in and try to thing out the enemy with a nice two handed weapon ( ive notice that doing couched attackes often leads to more fallen horses then id like. for some reason when you drawl your weapon for attack, the enemy usually tries to block, but since you dont do that during a couched attack, they instead try to get your horse, so ill take my safer two handed attackes).
so my way usually if done right will keep most of my troops alive but i tend to go through horses alot.
Oh don't get me wrong I could take whole armies but whats a few men to making it go by a lot faster.
Why can't you get to Cair Andros in TLD? Nor can you get to Mordor, doesn't make sense to me. It'd also be nice if the map was expanded more Northward and Dwarves were added to the game.
If you cheat to get there when you enter the town it says Not Implemented Yet.
