    Default Demographics of US Military

All too commonly we hear that the military is made up of impovershed people with no other choices. Or that minorities are over-represented. Even more harmful is that the military is made up of people who fail the education system. But this report shows something different:

    U.S. Military Recruiting Demographics
    From American Forces Press Service

    Nov 27 2005
    By Jim Garamone
The U.S. military is not a "poor man's force."

That's the conclusion Defense Department officials reached following examination of enlisted recruiting statistics gathered over the past year.

"There is an issue of how representative of America is the force," said Curt Gilroy, the director of DoD's accessions policy in the Pentagon.

DoD tracks "representativeness" - as Gilroy calls it - very closely. And representativeness can take a whole host of forms - race, education, social status, income, region and so on. "When you look at all of those, you find that the force is really quite representative of the country," he said in a recent interview. "It mirrors the country in many of these. And where it doesn't mirror America, it exceeds America."

The data shows the force is more educated than the population at large.
Servicemembers have high school diplomas or the general equivalency diploma. More servicemembers have some college than the typical 18- to 24-year-olds. "To carry representativeness to the extreme, we would have to have a less-educated force or we would want a lower-aptitude force," Gilroy said.
The study is part of DoD's focus to bring the best recruits into the military. The services - who are responsible for manning, equipping and training the force - take this data and apply it to recruiting efforts.

The force is a volunteer force; no one is coerced into serving. The military is one option young people have after high school. Military service offers money for college - money a large segment of the population doesn't have. For those people, the military is an attractive option.

Many young people who don't yet know what they want to do see the military as a place to serve and decide what they want to do for the rest of their lives, rather than take a low-paying job or do nothing.

Critics say the U.S. military has too many African-Americans as compared to the population and not enough Hispanics or Asian-Americans. "We don't recruit for race," Gilroy said. "We have standards, and if people meet those standards, then should we say they are not allowed in because of race? That would be wrong."

The statistics show the number of African-American servicemembers is dropping. That concerns Gilroy and his office. The military is a leader in equal opportunity in the United States, he said, adding that few, if any, Fortune 500 companies can match the equal employment opportunity record of the military. The office is studying why young black men and women are not signing up.

The office also is studying the Hispanic population in America. Census records say Hispanics are the largest minority group in the United States. Young Hispanic men and women have a strong tendency to serve in the military, though so far, only the Marine Corps has been "able to break the code" to get significant numbers of recruits, Gilroy said.

On the socioeconomic side, the military is strongly middle class, Gilroy said. More recruits are drawn from the middle class and fewer are coming from poorer and wealthier families. Recruits from poorer families are actually underrepresented in the military, Gilroy said.

Other trends are that the number of recruits from wealthier families is increasing, and the number of recruits from suburban areas has increased. This also tracks that young men and women from the middle class are serving in the military.

Young men and women from urban areas are not volunteering, Gilroy said. In fact, urban areas provide far fewer recruits as a percentage of the total population than small towns and rural areas.

DoD and the services will use these statistics and more to craft their recruiting policies, Gilroy said.

i think in the UK its a mix. alot of people who have no qualifications join the army and are from the lower classes but that doesnt mean your an idiot. for a start you can join at 16 1/2 so some people just dont want to go on and do A levels but also alot of middle class people join too. i myself seriously considered a career in the Army and i dont think of myself as a retard. i think its a very negative view that only thick people join. it also doesnt take into account that inteligence is not purely academic. some people in the armed forces have skills that the average academic genius can only dream of.

well than I am very worried about the middle class, because we aren't producing the people we should be. IE, half intelligent people. At least, from what I've seen, the average GI doesn't seem to be the brightest flash from the cannon.

THAT SAID, I've hardly come across every soldier in our military, but I'm still a bit worried.

Yep the accusation that the US sends "poor minorities" off to die in wars has been a myth for decades. For those people not pondering military careers the people who sign up are basically middle class looking for that little something either skills, money or whatever to get ahead later in life. They arent people asking you if you want fries with your order (not to insult those people of course).

At least, from what I've seen, the average GI doesn't seem to be the brightest flash from the cannon.
What exactly have you seen that your are basing that on?

part youtube videos (not exactly the most reliable source, I am well aware) but these basically rednecks yelling and hooting and hollering when they shoot up people. disgusting. Part actual meeting (though technically they were Marines, not soldiers) and I wasn't really impressed (though most of the officers seemed quite bright) and not mention a few buddies of mine that joined the military. Funny and usually a good guy ('cept when he starts spouting stereotypes about Arabs, Liberals, etc), but dumb as ****ing rock.

I'm sure there are some bright GIs, I just haven't met/seen them yet.

    @Farnan

c'mon really? We all know that's not what Kerry meant to say, or least not how it was supposed to be interpreted.

America should have people of different origin in their army? because there are many Americans with foreign parents living there.

Like Iran, we have many groups people, and that makes our army multi-cultural

i think it is only the Arabs that can choose if they want or don't want to be a part of the army or not. all the otherst must, all from Jews to Zoroastrian and Armenian to Persian.

I personally refuse to accept that I will have approximately 17% less money each month because I am Middle Eastern, I refuse to accept that if a girl is raped the rapist blames it on her clothing, and I refuse to accept that the working class is the slave of the modern society- thats why I believe in Socialism, thats why call myself a Feminist and thats why I am Anti-rascist.

Yea it was what Kerry meant to say...

After he had a bad reaction he pretended it was a mistake.

And according to youtube we are ruled by alien overlords.

or maybe he knew there would be backlash against it because he knew people would interpret it wrong.

I think alot of the videos of American soldiers yelling and hooting in combat would fall along the lines of stress relief, not all of course but we've seen videos of soldiers after combat and when it all seems to set in what they just went thru and that level of bravado quickly fades. I think its a matter of coping for them to get by.

I think Phoebus is a pretty damn intelligent guy, and he's a soldier . I'm joining the military and I'd like to think I'm intelligent; heck, I even scored well on the ASVAB/AFQT.

EDIT: When people are in a high-stress job, they will act differently. Has anyone seen M*A*S*H? Not a source, as it is a tv show, but I undoubtedly believe that those things happened in MASH hospitals. Police officers and the such also will usually have a more odd sense of humor. It's not a US Soldier occupation exclusivity.

I was enlisted for a bit, till I contracted ROTC.

Scored 91 on my ASVAB, first try no studying.

You don't seem to be so stupid either. I scored a 94 on it myself, no studying either. Don't want to take it again and risk getting a lower score .

(ASVAB stands for Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery)
(AFQT stands for Armed Forces Qualifying Test)

I plan on doing ROTC after getting into college and finishing it.

Also, Kerry meant what he said. After virtually everyone chastised him for it, he did his signature move, he flip-flopped. There is no way to take what he said out of context.

First Farnan, enoch the catalyst was discussing their family members, not them. Of course they have more college as the military turns away the **** ups and near do wells with commendable consistency. Junior college is commendable as is trade school, but such things are more commonly working, not middle class.

Second, as previously stated, everyone thinks they are working class. If your parents/family can not afford the entire price of a 4 year private college, you are working or lower middle class.

Third, America does not have defined classes, but the above is a good gauge if you have an idea of the various economics of the States.

Wow, so if someone doesn't make enough to spend $30,000 a year (at least including room and board) in addition to their normal expenses they are not Middle Class? Really, the only people that can afford to send their children to college without taking out loans, without scholarships, are the rich.

    Making it easier.
If you don't have a combined family income of $80+ a year. You are lower middle class.

    Fair enough?

No, that is upper Middle Class...

Thus middle class is for a household within a few thousand of that.
