Default Letavia - our Late Roman/Romano British re-enactment group

We are portraying Brythonic soldiers from the late Vth century, equiped in the roman way. My own character, Morcant map Conmail is what can be called a 'Hiberno-Romano-British' as he got gaelic origins.

Here our first serious photos, thought of course our equipment is not yet finished!

The whole troup, from left to right: Ewen map Erbin, Tegvan map Penvaren, Adwyn map Coel et Morcant map Conmail.

    The camp.

    Ewen map Erbin.

    Morcant map Conmail.

    Tegvan map Penvaren.

    Adwyn map Coel.

We made most of our equipment ourselves. Ewen is doing craftmanship and Tegvan is our smith aswell, of course some equipment can be bought to organisms like Armae or Deepeeka but when you do it yourself (of course skill is needed) you can have exactly what you want at a cheaper price.

    We are based in Brittany.

Wow!! those helmets have been done very well indeed, but the spear shafts seem a little short though, I assume that they must have been broom handles right?

This is a very worthwhile hobby of yours Agraes, both this and the work on your mod, as they can be used to promote a greater interest and awareness of this period of history as the Late Roman period is little understood by the public at large. I am assuming that you and your comrades dispay at public events in Brittany, if not you should do. I myself have wanted to join a re-enactment group for ages but unfortunately there is not one in my area and finding the time would be very difficult. I am a member of the local archery club and have a fine English Longbow in my possession, but this group is no not really a proper re-enactment group.

Some time ago on the Internet, I came across this dedicated enthusiast who recreates historical armour and equipment. He is a very good craftsman as you can see, although his website has not been updated for a long while; http://www.travisconn.com/index.html Check out the detail of that Lamellar armour it is stunning.

Yes, spear shafts are a bit short, we will get longer ones soon

I saw you are from Northumberland. The Comitatus, doing Late Roman and early Anglian re-enactment are based in Yorkshire, perhaps you can contact them?

    Here their website:

Yes, I made it myself. The left sections is a caption from the film King Arthur and the right section depicts a Britannia figure looking over Stonehenge, as I have always associated Britannia as having a strong Romano-Britain symbolism, Britain being a legacy of a classical Rome and all that which in point of fact was not the case.

However I do believe that Roman colonists perhaps had a greater influence on the later Germanic peoples than we may think, although archaeological evidence of a social continuity is extremely rare. To what extent Romano-Celts were completely conquered by subsequent invaders in great battles or were slowly absorbed by growing numbers of invading peoples will perhaps be never known. However one thing is for sure it is a recipe for a fantastic mod of RTW and a signature to match.

    Wow, those are great pics!

Agraes, I assume your role in the group is a light infantry or skirmisher type? Since the group is based in Brittany, do you or the others speak the Breton Celtic language?

I go unarmored for now (as most of our members) but my helmet is getting finished and Ill get a spatha soon too. Lorica hamata or squamata may be for next year, so Im light now but will end up heavily protected!

I got some basic grasps of Breton, but Adwyn (with the ridge helmet and white tunic with red stripes) is actually a teacher of Breton, and our decanus or penteulu.

    Some news from Letavia.

Last weekend we had a big event in Marle in Picardy. Thema was from the antiquity to 1000 AD, and there were around 600 re-enactors (including 2 early empire centuries, the prestigious Ermine Street Guard, around 40 late romans, Redwald in his Sutton Hoo regalia, etc.) for more than 10.000 visitors.

Enough said, check the photo galeries:
