I think he means dark-skinned Caucasian people (like this) as compared to the traditional african.

Ethiopia was more semitic influenced than much more of Africa, but I think they would simply be of mixed ethnicity, similar to the Turks of Central Asia, or the Moors closer to West Africa in Africa.

Hmm. Makuria is a subset and one of the various kingdoms belonging to the Nubian peoples, so I guess thats a good place to start if your interested in ethnicity.
