Thread: The difference between a site and forums.

Default The difference between a site and forums.

A website is the entire thing, articles, downloads, wiki, blogs, screenshots, forums, etc. A site can be a dedicated site to a game but still have a large and open forum on many subjects. What is important is that the site be dedicated to the game that its specific to, be it paradox games or total war. EVERYTHING there needs to be totally about that game or series.

The forums however, in most online communities, are a combination of many things and usually not dedicated to anything in particular. Forums are part of a site, but due to their dynamic nature are not necessarily dedicated. Many dedicated fan sites are part of a larger community with ONE forum, this forum has many topics including those on many games and general discussions as well.

Its important that on each site that the articles, downloads, blogs, etc, the key tools to inform people about that game be dedicated. Forums however are more open. A forum and website has always been considered to different, forums are not called websites for a reason. If this "site" was ONLY a forum (no front page just the forum) it wouldn't be called a site but the total war boards.

    I will give some examples:
    http://nwvault.ign.com/ - dedicated fansite
http://vnboards.ign.com/ - its forums, extremely large and extensive

    http://civilization4.net/ - dedicated fansite (apolyton)
http://apolyton.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?forumid=228 -where the forums link on the site links to
    http://apolyton.net/forums/index.php - the entire forums
^ that is how I think paradox should be done.

    http://ubuntuforums.org/ - a forum... not a site.

I think we need to work this out before the submission of anything. The reason why this is important is because it will affect every expansion site and the forums are quite possibility the most important. All these ideas like "separate indexes" that require complex programming are NOT going to happen. The way apolyton does things is, what I think, should be done for any expansions site.

This would be the equivellent to having a site just dedicated to SOLELY Medieval Total War and having the forums link on that site point to this:
    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=3

Its the same forums, its just PART OF the forum. The CC and everything is still accessible.

edit: I'm not sure i'm being understood when i'm discussing this.

Swear filters are for sites run by immature children.
