Icon14 JERUSALEMITE and ANTIOCHITE Character Names for Kingdoms

    Start year is 1174

Faction: Kingdom of Jerusalem and Principality of Antioch
    Status: Completed
    Total Names: 249
    Authors: finneys13

Alright then, made the list, using the book 'God's War - A History of the Crusades' by Tyerman, and then translating names into French, German, Italian, etc.

As you will see, most of the fore- and surnames are French, but a few Italian, German, English, Armenian and even single Danish and Norwegian names managed to get into the list. Which shows the national breakdown of the Crusader States pretty well I think.

There are about 100 or so forenames, 129 surnames and 20 female names, if needed, a few more female names can be stolen from the French namelist.

Those people who would have ruled in Jerusalem and Antioch would have various French and English names, depending on where they hailed from in Europe.
Before the Crusades, they would have been Hebrews, Jews, and after they would have been mostly Arabs.

So what kind of "Jerusalemite & Antiochite" names are you looking for?

Not necessarily, some minor French families made it big in the Outremer, and other families had no connection at all, but the French namelist could be used as a basis.

A mix of French and Siculo-Norman names would be more suited to the task.

Here is a list of Antioch's princes, regents, and Kings,

I doubt we would have any English names in the end, of Acre would be de Acre, etc.

Hopefully somebody comes to do this.

Have started a namelist for the Crusader states, from the book 'God's War - A History of the Crusades' by Tyerman.

    Great job Finneys!

Though while the list is perfect, I was wondering if it would be more user friendly to use names like "Baldwin" insteaed of "Baoudouin". I'm not asking you to change your list, but asking to discuss that if Broken Crescent anglicizes some of the names are we totally off the mark, or is it sort of acceptable? Though I agree that all the "of X" should be "de X".

Depends on if you want historical accuracy or not. I would recommend using my list, rather than using Anglicisations, as Jerusalem was largely a French colony.

And most if not all of those names would be pronounced in French almost the same as they are pronounced in English, even Baudouin and Baldwin are very close.

I can see your point Anglicising very 'foreign' looking names, but French and English names are very similar, I would leave the list as it is. Nobody has complained yet about the Scottish or Polish names, which, if you look at them, look very 'foreign' and pretty unpronounceable if you don't speak a Gaelic language or Polish respectively.

Use any of the other lists if you want, Byzantium, Turks, etc., but remember playing with the proper names of factions does make the faction more unique and helps the game superficially.

I think the names lists with very "foreign" looking names are the best. My favorite is the Scottish names. It looks so unusual, but very authentic which I'm sure it is from what I've read in the Scots names thread. I wouldn't change the above list.

Ahh, okay. I agree with you then. I'll keep this names list. Better to keep it like it was in reality since, like you said, this was essentially a french kingdom. Most of the names are quite pronouncable anyways, although thats probably because I'm Canadian .

"Amalfi" is (and had been) an Italian town. Are you sure it is a name?

    de Monteferrat
Only a thing finneys13, this name isn't French but Italian. So it would be right to write it as "di Monferrato".
As you know this surname belonged to the illustrious marquises of the Monferrato, that take the name from the lands that ruled. For example Corrado di Monferrato was crowned King of Jerusalem after the deposition of King Guy de Lusignan at the end of the Third Crusade.
I hope you'll correct the name.

    P.S.
Concerning Outremer, the majority of the noble families that lived there were all French and Italian. There was also a minority of English and Germans.
For example the family of Ibelin, that boast illustrious member as Balian and Baldwin d'Ibelìn, was an Italian family originally come from Pisa.

Don't know how that one slipped by, now fixed.

If that is all you see wrong, excellent.

I tried to give mostly French names, with Italian names next and then some English, German, etc., hopefully reflecting the Outremer properly.
