There were still quite a few imperfections (there always will be). There will always be places you can reload to get better results. It's just a matter of if it will actually gain another turn.

I agree that cavalry are overpowered but many mods take it to the other extreme and underpower them drastically.
For me, fun is more important than balance so I stick with vanilla.

LOL I didn't even know they MADE 4K computer monitors.
Considering that 4K was not even a thing until 2004 there's a very good chance that the game is not compatible with that resolution.

You're correct that there is a file with that variable in it (can't remember the name of it offhand), but no file will change data for previously saved games. Any changes you make to the game code...
