Where did you get the export plugin for 3ds 2014?
The skeleton has to be there. Maybe you didn't import it, or it's hidden. Check the display settings, and be sure to import everthing.
If you put a skin modifier on the model you can't export it with the "default" attribute. It has to be "weighted" (or "weighted decal").
You don't need to make any convertion to editable poly once...
What kind of model are you trying to import?
