You might try saving the .dds in BC1/DXT1, that's usually how i save them using GIMP :) while i have to say that some textures in TWW2 are weird and at least for the dark elves, they resembles a lot...
Check if in the variantmeshes there is an "imposter_model" and replace the vanilla one with the name of your model. It might not work tough..it depends on how the game handle this stuff :)
