I bet the Theban Sacred Band paraded from time to time.
Majority of "you Turks" are turkified Byzantines.
The video would have been more believable if not for the openly homophobic elements like referring to homosexuality as sick and attacking historians through their proposed sexuality.
I think they offer good enough information for a military history enthusiast in a compact and entertaining package.
More "scientific" books would make dry reading for most people.
Maybe not the lighter crossbows but the heavy arbalests had often twice the energy of a powerful warbow. This energy translates into armor piercing.
Rambo used a compound bow, not longbow btw. :)
Anyway I don't think it's the ease of training either that was the main reason for abandoning bows in favour of firearms. The bow was simply inferior...
I thought the Japanese supersword vs. European toysword myth had been debunked thoroughly already. The Japanese had no miracle trick up their sleeves to make their swords more special.
240 yards (220m) sounds a bit excessive. But propably doable for a strong expert archer with target arrows. Since the most powerful medieval longbow replica (150 pound draw weight) was able to shoot...
I have given evidence (and you did too that supports my argument) but the problem is that you seem to have already decided against it even before this discussion started and I don't think nothing...
Many target shooting competitions specifically forbid rifled barrels because they were supposed to be kept as "realistic" as possible. Including the arquebus competition in my original example where...
My debate was about the effective accurate range of muskets/arquebuses in comparison to that of longbows. And I propose that they were roughly equal.
This is exactly proving my point here. Even at 200 yards (180 meters) the musket was a devastatingly effective weapon. 40% hits is pretty damn good and can potentially break the opponent right there....
Sorry can't give you the source on my statement. It was in an article about the history of sharpshooters in our local military magazine. Read it in the library.
I could try to dig it up tomorrow I...
Here's an interesting and surprising point I found while reading.
This I got from an article that mentioned the results of a shooting competition (with around 150 participants) in the early 16th...
The Japanese were quick to adapt firearms and built their own improved versions of them en masse. The huge armies that unified Japan could wield (even durign civil war Japan would unite to fight off...
Don't know about historical Jihads but they are being declared against other muslim groups all the time (Sunnis, Shias, different terrorist groups, factions and governments etc. declare Jihads...
What I don't understand about the Civil War is why did the Confederation start the hostilities in the first place when it was the underdog (by attacking Union forts)? Why didn't it just sit it out...
Armor was worn when combat was expected and close. During marches and camp life the armor was off.
You can hold it for the couple of hours a battle would last.

That's not what my books on the Knightly Orders tell me.
But I'm sure there are always isolated insidents of everything.
Most notable thing about the Templars and Hospitallers was their discipline (and bravery of course).
When other knights could often be reckless and ignore orders or set formations the Knightly...
If we take a look at the haplogroup distribution of the Balkans we see that the haplogroup I is very common there. Up to 50% of ethnic Albanians belong to this particular haplogroup and it's...
The Albanian language is considered related to ancient Illyrian.
But the language doesn't usually tell the entire history of the people who speak it. Genetically speaking the peoples of the Balkans...
The Soviet industrialization programs were effective even they caused lots of suffering too.
Russia had huge potential as it was a fairly civilized nation with a large population and enormous...
And if he indeed was a Sarmatian auxiliary commander he could just as well followed the Sarmatian shamanistic religion.
Here is the standard US Marines rifle qualification test.

It's 10 rounds at 500 yards (~457m). But they have...
I believe that the Atlantis legend is based on the Minoan civilization and the Santorini (Thera) volcanic disaster.
I think the armor was mainly against sword blows.
Cavalry vs Calvary combat was usually fought with sabers.
Napoleon ordered more of his cavalry to get bodyarmor because they got so badly cut up...
Also in the steppes the musket finally shifted the advantage to the infantryman from nomad horse archers.
And the Ottoman Turks and Mamelukes with their still more archery based weaponry took a...
I don't think it's about the training. Muskets consistently beat archery based armies in colonial and napoleonic periods even when they were armed with superb turkish bows that were the pinnacle of...
Focke-Wulf 190 D.
It had firepower, speed and the looks.
And of course was more than a match for it's main rivals the P-51D and Spitfire.
Native Americans had little contact with other civilizations and had to invent almost everything on their own.
Europeans were more or less in contact with the ancient and great civilizations of...
The Chinese actually fought amazingly well in the Korean war considering how outgunned they were. No tanks, no aircraft, very little artillery... And the tactics were actually very innovative and...
Did the Romans disappear? On the contrary. It was the invaders who were assimilated by the much larger local population.
Even today most of France, Spain and Italy speak Romance languages that...
I think you might ignored my second quote (from wikipedia) that is clearly talking about simple one piece of wood designs.
Here's some more "scientific" explation:
"Though many people think...
"The American Flatbow (AFB), also known as the American longbow, was developed in the 1930s. It resulted from scientific investigation into the best cross-sectional shape for a bow limb. This...
If it was then it's even more advanced (energy efficient) than the simpler D-shape. But the material was yew, the preferred wood for longbows.
On an interesting sidenote the bow found with Ötzi was also a "longbow" (over 1.8m and much taller than Ötzi himself). So that's a 5300 year old longbow from Italy.
1940's shells and 1940's armor.
Did the Allies even use 30mm cannons for aerial tank busting? Dunno about that but the Soviets used 23mm cannons on the Sturmovik that could pierce the top of...
There fire rate is better but the DU penetrator isn't much superior to a good tungsten one. The main reason for the popularity of DU is it's considerably more affordable price.
How about this...
