    I've had campaigns with over 600 turns on 2tpy with no crashes. Is there anything consistent in the logs they upload? Maybe a bad trait trigger?

    1.) If it's like my Empire copy, you will have to activate it first. Depending on how intrusive Steam is if you are trying to do it logged into Steam, it just may recognize the disc and download it...

    medieval2.exe is 1.02/1.2 for singleplayer and 1.03/1.3 for multiplayer. This is why the confusion, the 1.03 patch was only made for multuplayer but it's required to update to Kingdoms. Seven years...

    You didn't say it was XP. About all installs now are Win8/8.1 related. XP is no longer supported by Microsoft and Windows Update may not do it's job as expected anymore.

    I doubt it as it needs the 1.2 and 1.3 patches before Kingdoms will install.

    Did you install an old Windows backup? Old registry would probably be there.
    Have you disabled the UAC, yet?

    If you ever had the game installed before, you have to uninstall it, again, delete all traces, again, and either use a good free registry cleaner or regedit to remove the registry entries CA's Piece...

    There are the data\loading_screen folder for part of it and data\menu folder for the other screens. I am not really familiar with these other than loading one into Paint.Net and editing a little.
