Re: When to sally out when being besieged

Sally out when you have more cavalry than the enemy.

Sally out when you have at least 1:1 ratio because the AI is just stalling and its better to take out that enemy army sooner than later.
    ...
  2. Re: Melee cavalry units or missile cavalery units

I mean....it honestly depends on the situation, but as a general rule, ranged cavalry beats out melee cavalry in terms of overall usefulness. They can wear multiple hats and mounted archers...
  3. Re: Grand Campaign factions that should be played offensively from the start

For sure, but it is faction specific. Epirus, for example, can conquer Athens and Sparta in the first three-to-five turns with it's starting army and only a few recruited units.

    This is also...
  4. Re: Grand Campaign factions that should be played offensively from the start

Any faction that does not have a port settlement connected to their capital.

Any faction that does not have a starting trade resource.

Any faction surrounded by larger, stronger factions (as...
  5. Re: How do you normally fight a battle if you are fight from inside a camp?

Honesty, if I'm just playing a solo campaign, I get an army of spear units with high defense and auto-resolve the steppe hordes to death. If I'm fighting the nomads, I'm not setting up a fortified...

    Re: Suebi strategies, grand campaign

There are two ways to fight Rome, strategically and tactically (not mutually exclusive). Strategically: Aggressive and precise settlement sacking to disrupt their economy and unit production while...
  7. Re: How do you normally fight a battle if you are fight from inside a camp?

I treat them rather similarly to you. You want to funnel the enemy in where their numbers don't mean squat, then pelt their backs and flanks with ranged fire.

    Re: Suebi strategies, grand campaign

Suebi are a really fun but challenging faction. Your early game will consist of charges and the "frenzy" ability, and strategic expansion. Your fellow Germans are busy tearing each other apart, so...
  9. Re: How to fight the Arverni and Rome as Egypt

Good to hear you're getting the Galatians recruited!

The AI is smart enough to try and bait you with those raiding armies by staying just out of reach, my only suggestions are to keep a champion...
  10. Re: How to fight the Arverni and Rome as Egypt

Are you focusing on field battles? I can't remember if Egypt has decent ranged cavalry or not. Setting up your pikes for settlement defense is my go-to strategy as Hellenic factions; the higher tier...

Re: Romans vs Parthians battle strategies

Against the AI, you just need to try and gauge/predict things to be weighted in the AI's favor. Rome II AI is smart enough to actually try and bait the player with an army in forced march that's JUST...
  12. Re: How to fight the Arverni and Rome as Egypt

I'm more impressed by the AI for taking out the Seleucids without you lol

Do you have dedicated naval units patrolling the sea? Maybe you can intercept some armies on the water.

    The Arverni are...

Re: Romans vs Parthians battle strategies

As Romans, do what they historically do best: bring specialized auxiliaries (shields, archers, cavalry) and dig in for a fight. If this is a campaign, get yourself in a fortified stance and bait the...
  14. Re: The Secret of Rome's Success: Manpower or Mobilisation?

I would argue diplomacy played more of a role than the amateur historian would think. Rome had many allies, allies that were usually treated pretty well in the early Republic, comparatively speaking....
  15. Re: What Roman faction do you recommend in Imperator Augustus campaign?

Lepidus...a tough start? You must have rolled natural ones during your early game, my friend. Lepidus has loyal client states, breadbasket regions, and safe expansion. I'm actually surprised you had...
  16. Re: What are your favorite strategies for getting the most income possible per turn?

Early game? Population boost (migration edict, religious buildings, character traits, etc.), farming/fishing, and nabbing any adjacent trade resources.

Mid/late game? Expansion to nearby trade...

    Re: Favourite political strategies

I keep the rivals in charge of large navies. Lots of opportunity for victories with low chance of death. I also marry as many people as possible as the boost to loyalty is fantastic.
  18. Re: Scandinavia Should be Cut Down to Size (and other map suggestions)

Denmark and Norway need those settlements (IMO) to create a functioning economy before going to war with major powers. I play these factions a lot, and I'd say you could probably remove one of the...
  19. Re: [DOWNLOAD] SSHIP 0.98 version 2022/09/08

I didn't see it mentioned in this thread, but I remember the last version saying that Norway would be finished soon, is that the case with this update?
  20. Re: SSHIP_098 April 7th 2022 - for testing

Just a quick update/question: I have all the things I need for my King to be crowned (scotland). I have the regions and I built Edinburgh castle. My guy has 6 authority and 10 piety, but he's...
  21. Re: SSHIP_098 April 7th 2022 - for testing

Alright, right now my Scotland campaign is at turn 160 and I have some thoughts:

    1. Vassals. Yes, in M2TW it is nothing more than a military alliance with tribute, but I still consider it an...
  22. Re: SSHIP_098 April 7th 2022 - for testing

From what I know through my second-hand knowledge from multiple modders on this site, something like that should have caused the game to crash. If there was an empty space in the walls, all the enemy...
  23. Re: SSHIP_098 April 7th 2022 - for testing

Metagaming AI kills the roleplaying experience, don't you think? :P

Anyways, maybe others have experienced otherwise, but, at the very least, in all of my campaigns (Scotland, Portugal, Serbia,...
  24. Re: SSHIP_098 April 7th 2022 - for testing

Is it a feature or a bug that the AI factions completely ignore rebel armies? They'll attack the settlements, sure, but they'll leave the rebel armies outside the settlements alone, and it basically...
  25. Re: Empire Divided: What Romans faction would you suggest trying?

Gallic Rome is the easiest, no contest. Strong starting position, strong allies, strong units, and very few people hate you.

Hardest is Aurelian's Rome for being in the complete opposite position.

My campaign that got away was my first go at Aurelian's Rome. Got unlucky with the AI making alliances with each other and...

Re: The best place to put your range units

catching an arrow or javelin with the shield is just an animation, isn't it? It's just to represent the damage soak of the unit from an attack.

I know in older titles that the shield is purely...
  28. Re: SSHIP_098 April 7th 2022 - for testing

Dude, Lithuania is already hard enough without the Catholics crusading you. It's gotta be in the top three hardest factions with Serbia and East Rome. No money, no allies, aggressive neighbors with...
  29. Re: SSHIP_098 April 7th 2022 - for testing

I don't have any issues with settlement negotiations, but I will confirm that the AI is (has always been since vanilla M2TW) terrible at naval warfare.

England not taking Wales is also something...

Re: The best place to put your range units

It's not a good idea unless there is only one or two units and you can occupy them otherwise with some fast spear units or your own cavalry.

Re: The best place to put your range units

Well a big reason one might not move their ranged units around the battle line to fire into the enemy flanks/rear is that they aren't confident they could micromanage the units well enough as to not...
  32. Re: Did you ever defend a city succesfully from an enemy army that outnumbered you just with the garrison troops?

Never sally out unless you have a healthy numerical advantage or if you need to counter the enemy infantry (sword units, mostly) with a large dose of cavalry. In the case of only having a garrison...
  33. Re: SSHIP_098 April 7th 2022 - for testing

Eh, I'd have to echo Filnisius here. I've tried Portugal a few times and it always ends with Castile breaking the alliance and backstabbing me, leading to my defeat. This was also a problem in SS in...
  34. Re: SSHIP_098 April 7th 2022 - for testing

Interesting, so the description doesn't accurately depict the trait?
  35. Re: SSHIP_098 April 7th 2022 - for testing

No worries, I just thought I'd give updates when I come across something new. This is the first time since vanilla that I've come across this problem.

Is it a princess trait issue or a general...
  36. Re: SSHIP_098 April 7th 2022 - for testing

Just an update to this: I still get the disinherited trait after marriage to a general UNLESS they are part of the mission where a general asks for a princess to marry. So it seems the game does not...
  37. Re: What specific Rome 2 Total War campaings did you complete?

That can work, but you need to make sure they are the correct rebels (native to the faction that started in the region), and you need to double make sure you don't trigger a slave revolt.

  40. Re: How do you deal with big empire problems?

Corruption and loss of income can't really compete with a good snowball effect, in my experience. Maybe it's the way I turtle-rapid expansion (a province at a time)-turtle, but as long as you don't...
