My suggestion would be try N/N. Test battles with phalanx units and against them, you'll see they work exactly as they should.
I think the campaign difficulty is bugged. Playing N/N and phalanx just crumbles when flanked and are very good defensive units but got low killing power even at front, except against charging...
No they dont. Play on Normal/Normal, they are very good defensive units frontally, crumble when charged from rear and have abysmal speed at least in pike formation.
I think the balance its way too off with all of those additions...
Use elephants as @vbus, they preserve your flanks superbly.

Theres one that reskins some factions to match DeI enhanced units, but I don't think there is any sub or official overhaul for ED yet.

Well, FotE is a battle and unit overhaul while EP focus on the campaign. For sure you can play each other alone, and I would advise doing it so that you can feel where and what each mod do...
Yeah, melee need some tweaks i think. Older versions seems to be a lot more faster in general.

Just make sure to have all files of each mod back to their respective folders when trying one another.
Yeah, we have wind affecting naval battles movement. But land battles, specially projectiles, would be very complex i think.

If the mods that you have are mod foldered, you can install this one without problems. No need to reinstall Medieval 2.
